Sports Nonprofit Seeks To Open Stadium, School for Athletes in Barnegat

Field hockey, football, lacrosse, soccer to be offered, with main focus on baseball, along with tutoring for young athletes' SATs and GPAs

Team New Jersey Elite, a Toms-River based nonprofit organization and public charity that offers athletic and academic education to high school youths, is seeking to build a sports complex and school at the intersection of Route 72 and Route 532 in Barnegat.

The organization presented their plans to the township last month, and its representatives felt the community was receptive to their project, they said.

"They definitely seem to be 100 percent behind it," said Athletic Director Eric Alvarez. "The township and the mayor and the overall the majority of the people that were there seemed to be happy about it."

"it would bring enomoc growth to the Township of Barnegat," Alvarez added. "There would be jobs created within our facility."

"Barnegat loves us," said Dennis Pfefferkorn, project coordinator for the complex and Team New Jersey Elite's treasurer secretary. "It’s a great area for us to have the project in. The access from the Parkway is great, you got Atlanitc City, you got Newark, you got Philadelphia. Plus you have Long Beach Island, so if people come to the camp after the games, they can go out on Long Beach Island. So families can have a great vacation along with their children playing sports."

"This would be the type of business development that Barnegat Township would encourage and support," said Township Administrator David Breeden. "Overall, commercial ratables are a low impact type of ratable as they usually require little in the way of municipal services along with having almost no impact on the schools."

If the plans are realized, the 35-acre complex will feature a stadium, along with a school building offering academic tutoring for the young athletes.

"We’re a sports and education academy, yes, and our main focus is baseball," Alvarez said. "But we’ll be going out to other sports, as well."

The sports featured at the site will include football, soccer, lacrosse and field hockey.

The nonprofit was founded in 2010, and is now serving 45 high school students from all over Ocean County in several rented facilities in Manasquan.

"Our mission is geared to the student athlete, to make them physically fit and mentally prepared for college and for the sport that they desire to be in," Pfefferkorn said. "Seniors and juniors are our prime target."

The organization must go through a checklist of issues to address with the Pinelands Commission before proceeding with the project, Team New Jersey Elite representatives said. And, according to Pfefferkorn, if they are unable to address every issue, the group will try to acquire approvals to build on a different site in town. Pfefferkorn chose not to reveal the site's precise location.

"Hopefully we do resolve the issues (on the Route 72 site,)" Pfefferkorn said, "but if we don’t, we do have a plan B site, also in Barnegat."

"While they face many challenges with securing necessary approvals for their project, Team New Jersey Elite seems serious about building in Barnegat and is working diligently in order to accomplish their goal," Township Administrator Breeden said. "When practical, the township will provide any assistance or guidance in their effort to develop in Barnegat."

This is a terrible idea. The traffic would be awful for those of us who live west of the GSP. But the ruin of 35 acres of valuable habitat for trees, plants, and wildlife does not make this a feasible plan. The cheapest and easiest way to help curb climate change is to plant trees or keep the ones we already have. Please think about other things besides making money.

Team New Jersey Elite has mentioned that they have a B Plan location in Barnegat. Perhaps they could locate this complex at the former Shoreline Sand & Gravel site. The trees are already removed and there is a road into the complex.

Who cares about trees? The only trees I care about is the paper getting taken out of Barnegat Tax Papers wallets. This is an excellent ratable and is massively needed in Barnegat.

Now lets just see if we can make it work, if anyone can screw up a great thing like this it is the people of Barnegat.

Just like "the people of Barnegat" screwed up the Sonic that wanted to come to Barnegat, or the high end steak house that Sweet Jenny's wanted to open. Oh wait, it wasn't "the people of Barnegat" that screwed that up it was the two committeemen running for re-election this year. You can't even have a hot dog stand in Barnegat because of these guys and you blame the people? You should blame the fools that voted for them.

BeyondReality,
Do you know what trees do? They produce oxygen so people can breathe. They also retain ground water that goes back into the aquifer and then into the wells that provide the water to your home.

Bob, although I agree with you that as an overall the people of Barnegat are not to blame, that does not alleviate the few who are not members of the township committee who do nothing but wine and complain about anything and everything that end up ruining it for everyone. But yes you are correct, the township administration has been EXTREMELY business unfriendly under the excuse of keeping the town "Small & Historic". It is sad all the rateables we have missed out on: Steakhouses, Walmart, Shoprite, Sonic etc. It is sad and we are feeling the effects now.

Although a heavy responsibility lays on the township for their actions that does not mean that the residents get away from their responsibility free. People in this town LOVE to complain above everything and because of that the town suffers. Both parties, maybe not equally, but both are responsible.

Rick, Water to my home? Go tell the people of Barnegat who cant afford a home and ask them how much they care about where the water comes from that goes to the home they foreclosed on. I bet you dont find one homeless guy on the street concerned about where his water comes from. Thank God I am more fortunate than most but you should think more about human lifes and less about trees. Trees can be regrown, humans cant.

Yeah, we've all noticed the large number of homeless folks sleeping in the streets of Barnegat.
And you can't regrow trees if someone clear cuts an area and paves it over.

I'm not sure how this will help the youth of Barnegat. The playing fields of this complex are not going to be available to the general public. The article says they are currently serving 45 high school students from Ocean County. That is just a little over one student per town in the county.

Great idea!! I am sure there will be negative feedback from the seniors. The ones that forgot what it was to be a child & to have children!! I hope this happens!! The children that are in sports would love this!!

As a ratable this might be a good idea, but from what was written here it isn't going to do much for the average Barnegat youth.
According to their website, they offer several programs designed for high school students who are looking to get an athletic college scholarship.
These programs cost $500 and up.

Wrong again. Some uneducated voters voted for the committeemen that ran out Sonic, Sweet Jennys steak house, the hot dog stand and others. It's ALL the people of Barnegat that suffer because of these few thousand fools.

Then ALL the people of Barnegat should vote. You can't complain about the elected people in town if you don't vote at all.

The population of Barnegat is slightly over 20,000. Of that about 25% are under 18.
That leaves 15,000 who should be eligible votes.
In last fall’s election only about 5,000 voted. That means 2/3 of the voting age people don’t seem to care who is running the town.

Maybe you should run for office.

With all due respect The real problem is people like you "Rick". You talk and talk but you say nothing. You really don't know what happened with Sweet Jennys? They bought old railroad cars and moved them to the lot next to their old location, They wanted to open a high end steak and seafood restaurant and spent a large amount of money to do so. After getting the run around from the township for way too long they gave up. Destroyed the old historic railroad cars, and opened a new place IN ANOTHER TOWN. If the town would have worked with them we would have a unique restaurant (still standing after the fire to their original place) and not a vacant lot for sale. One of any other of a long parade of owners would be in in the Hurricane House right now, and Barnegat would not have lost the original owners of Sweet Jennys.

Thanks for proving the point that voters that don't know what they are talking about are the real problem. You should know the facts before you post... and post.... and post.

The original owner opened a second Sweet Jenny's on the island, before the fire. After the fire, he sold the one on the island and then sold the store name to an employee who then opened in the former Hurricane House.

Wow! You really have no idea what you are talking about. As I said, Sweet Jenny's wanted to open a HIGH END STEAK HOUSE in historic railcars. The cars were then destroyed and NOTHING new was opened in Barnegat. The township prevented this from happening just like they prevented other places from opening. Sweet Jenny's then moved to another town to open up another store. Why do you think they never rebuilt after the fire? All you do is attack because you bring NOTHING to the table and have no idea what you are talking about. You have made 12 posts here and you have said nothing of value other than showing a total lack of knowledge on local issues. Yes I vote, the difference is I know what I'm talking about. (and I don't need to make 12 posts to make my point). Now continue your ignorant personal attacks as you bring nothing to the topic being discussed here. I will not waste time on trolls. Bye Bye.

I don't believe it is the case that the township committee stopped any of the businesses from opening in Barnegat. If this is true, can anyone explain how they stopped them from building, or is this just more fiction rather than fact ?

Why don't you ask the owner of the Waretown Sonic why he could not open in Barnegat. He told the press that he had to end up going to a town that wanted him. Or ask the original owners of Sweet Jenny's why they destroyed the railroad cars they spent $40,000 to move to the site of their new high end steak house. And why they never built the site. Or ask the hotdog cart lady why the chamber of commerce WOULD NOT let her join as she was run out of town. Or ask the young lady that wants to sell her LOCALLY grown veggies at the BARNEGAT farmers market, but the ex Mayor's wife won't let her because the out of town vendors complained that her prices were too low.

Come on "Bill" wake up and look around you. Barnegat is a joke for business. Everyone knows it..... except the political hacks.
