Credit Card Malfunction Shorts Winery of Proceeds from Wine Festival
Ten New Jersey wineries are featured this weekend at the Autumn Wine Festival at Manahawkin Lake.
The owners of Wagonhouse Winery and Three Boys Brands are reaching out to anybody who attended the Autumn Wine Festival in Manahawkin yesterday and bought wine at their stand using a credit card.
"Our credit card company lost all of our credit card sales from yesterday. Sounds crazy, right? So if you made a purchase yesterday in Manahawkin and paid by credit card you will not be charged, even though we have your signed receipt and a list of all transactions.
The credit card company says they don't have a record of the transactions and therefore can't process the cards," wrote Dan and Heather Brown on their Facebook status earlier today. "As a result we are reaching out to you, asking you to contact us to make payment arrangements for your purchases. Obviously this won't reach everyone who purchased and we are at the mercy of your honesty, however, we have faith in our customers."
Brown, who was at the event again today, said he is having a "great time at the event," and was very pleased with the turnout yesterday. Early estimates placed attendance numbers around 1,000 people.
Dozens of New Jersey wines from wineries such as Amalthea Cellars, Auburn Road Vineyard, Coda Rossa Winery, Cream Ridge Winery, DiMatteo Vineyard, Plagido's Winery, Renault Winery, Sharrott Winery, Tomasello Winery and Wagonhouse are featured at the event.
This new festival will continue until about 5 p.m. today. The wine event accompanied the famous Stafford Township Fall Harvest Festival, which took place yesterday and featured a hay maze, live music, scarecrow making, hayrides, and a movie and bonfire at dusk.
During the regular Stafford Council meeting on Monday, Councilwoman Joanne Sitek, said the Township has been preparing for these events for months, and she was very excited about them both. "It is going to be fun for everyone, and it is supposed to be great weather, so please come out."
Tickets to sample the Autumn Wine Festival are available at www.visitLBIregion.com or at festival for purchase.

What am I missing here? The merchant is now responsible for credit card company failures? The receipts the merchant has can't be resubmitted? Did someone drink too many samples of this merchandise? Or would a couple of samples help me understand better?

The receipts do not have the entire credit card number only the last 4 digits. There is no way they can resubmit that information. However, I do agree that the credit card company should be on the hook for the lost information.

The merchant copies have the full credit card number on it. The customer copies have only the last 4. Coming from a retail IT background this story sounds very strange, unless there are details missing. An authorization code is always issued by the processor and helps in instances like this. If they have the full credit card numbers and exp dates they should just put the charges through again. Much ado about nothing.

First of all, all credit card receipts, including the merchant copy, should be truncated. As a cardholder, I do not want my full card number on any receipt and have crossed it off when I see a full card number. If the merchant processed the sales "live" on a cellular terminal or smartphone, then the Processor would have a record of the full card numbers and authorizations. Then they can be processed "offline". If the merchant used "store and forward", then there is no way for the Processor to capture this information as it would have been stored in the terminal and never sent to the Processor. Hope this helps.

Yyyup. They were probably doing them offline and didn't realize it. Not sure how they have info that would allow them to blame the processor for the problems though.

You are saying right that if you made a purchase yesterday in Manahawkin and paid by credit card you will not be charged, even though we have your signed receipt and a list of all transactions.

In this kind of wine festival generally money transaction increases automatically. The credit card company says they don't have a record of the transactions and therefore can't process the cards. Generally people buy liquor in this festival.
