Barnegat Begins Appropriating Funds for Dock Rebuild
Resident questions costs involved in repairs.
The Municipal Dock in Barnegat Township is on its way to being rebuilt after the Committee earlier this week authorized a resolution that appropriates $113,000 for the engineers to investigate the scope of the necessary repairs, following Superstorm Sandy.
The funds will be used toward "performing a complete investigation of the site," according to Township Engineer David J. Cella, of ARH Engineers. He said they hope to begin investigating the work within the month.
An estimate by the previous township engineer, Birdsall Engineering, put the total cost of the repairs at $1.4 million, which included all repairs of the site, and certain work on the bulkhead, according to Cella.
Barnegat resident Jake Taylor expressed concern about the costs involved in the repair, citing the fact that the initial build, according to Taylor, was $500,000.
"It seems strange to pay a million to fix something that costs us half a million to build," Taylor said.
