Barnegat Morning Report, May 9

Good morning, Barnegat! Today is Wednesday, May 9.

WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON:

In a word, lots, though you may not see some of these stories for a little while. But we hope to bring you more out of Monday night's Township Committee meeting, particularly the settlement of the lawsuit with an attorney for Walters Homes.

Some residents expressed their opposition to the township's latest action on Monday. We will have that story for you shortly.

Also, we will share an update on the fire department's and school district's preparations for the funeral services for Kyle McGetrick, the 12-year-old Barnegat resident, who battled leukemia for seven years and passed away last week.

Finally, we still need to update you on the Waretown library closure, which is something we'll try to do today.

WEATHER:

Temperatures keep on climbing this week. Today expect the high near 70 and an 80 percent of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after noon.

TIDE TABLE FOR BARNEGAT INLET:

Low: 5:12 a.m.

High: 11:05 a.m.

Low: 5:20 p.m.

High: 11:26 p.m.

Have a great day, everyone, and thanks for visiting Patch!

So you don't like the morning report -- or at least the part that talks about what's coming up? With all due respect, I'm not "bombarding," just giving you a sort of a preview into the day once a day, which is always followed by the stories I promise (or ones I didn't.) If enough readers agree with you, I hope they also speak up, (and if they are a tad more respectful about it, that will be a nice bonus.) I can absolutely consider doing away with this morning feature. I know my predecessor did this too, and I was under the impression that people enjoy that. As for real stories, please read one I just posted about the township re-zoning a section of Ocean Acres.

Thank you for the re-zoning story Katia. I think the readers would have benefited from knowing the relationship between the builder and the Republican officials. How much money has the builder given the Ocean County Republican party over the past 10 years? If the readers had this information I think they would have a more complete understanding as to why the 3 Republicans possibly voted they way they did. Again thank you for your story.

Thank you, Ken, your point taken -- I'm definitely thinking now how to make this work better for the readers, so stay tuned...
Bob, as a matter of fact I am working on this story and have just spoken with Mr. Dasti about it this morning :) This one might take me a bit longer to put together though. So, also, stay tuned. Thank you!

Thanks Katia! Here is a link to an older story http://www.redorbit.com/news/science/414508/developer_in_dumpclosing_deal_is_major_donor_to_gop/ for some background. Please don't rely just on Mr. Dasti only. It's important to know how much was given to the County GOP and not just the individuals involved. Thanks again, we really need good investigative reporting. Keep up the good work.

If I were relying just on the township attorney, I'd have the article for you by now. :) I plan to do more digging and share the results, whatever they may be. Thanks very much, Bob. Stay tuned...

Hi Bob, I'll be totally honest, nope, I haven't gotten far with this story. We have been really busy with the elections, other news, and especially, the launch of our Manahawkin site, and this kind of a report takes a lot of time and effort that isn't always available when you're trying to put out several stories a day. This happens a lot in journalism and isn't that unsual. Though I really shouldn't make any promises, I want you to know that I am still keeping this on the back of my mind and still hoping to get to it eventually, once I transition into the role of an editor for a two-town Patch. You just might need to be way more patient than you -- or I -- thought would be necessary. Sorry!!

Thanks for the reply Katia. I know you must be busy, but please try to find the time to finish your follow up story. The voters should know how much money was given by the developer to elect these committeemen. Also you may want to look into the affordable housing being built on Rt 9. Who is the developer, who was the real estate company involved, and what is their connection to the committeemen. Please add that info to your followup if you can. It would be a great service in informing our community. Thanks for your hard work!

Bob, if you're talking about the Laurel Oaks affordable housing development, the developer for that is Walters. As for the story, I will try my hardest to get to it. I realize that people want to know.

Thanks Katia. If you look a little further it may be interesting to know who the real estate company was that benefited from the sale of this property and if they have any connection to our committeemen. Since tax dollars were used, the public may find it interesting.

Thanks again, I can't wait to read your follow up!
