Update: Missing LBI Jet-Skiers Found Safe After Search

Father and son were traveling from North Beach to Carvel Island

The U.S. Coast Guard located two jet skiers Monday in the bay off Long Beach Island after they were reported overdue late Sunday.

A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Barnegat Light heard a whistle near an island while searching Barnegat Bay, which led them to a father and son who had been reported overdue.

Watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay in Philadelphia received notification around 9:30 p.m. of the pair, who were traveling aboard a personal watercraft that left from the North Beach Community Dock in the North Beach section of Long Beach Township to Carvel Island in Barnegat Bay, according to a statement from the Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard helicopter could be seen making low passes over the bay through the night between Sunday and Monday.

The survivors told rescuers they were setting up to go kite surfing when their jet ski got away from them. They swam to the island where they were later found. The Coast Guard said in a statement Monday morning that the pair were brought ashore and had no medical concerns.

Their identities were not released.

"We're very pleased with the outcome of this search and rescue case," said Chief Warrant Officer Jay Greiner, commanding officer of Station Barnegat Light.

"The father and son were very wise to stay together, remain calm, wear their life jackets, and wait for responders to find them. Simple boating safety practices can truly make a difference during a distress situation."

Wonderful that they were found safe. I sure hope the taxpayers don't have to foot the bill for this rescue.

Ummm, yes, TeaParty, this is exactly why we pay taxes; so sorry that this time it didn't benefit YOU personally. But if you really feel that "the taxpayers don't have to foot the bill", we'll remember to leave you to your own devices next time YOU call 911.

NancyInTR- You couldn't have said it better! Thanks! That was my husband and son missing. All the emergency responders did what they are there to do. They did it professionally and perfectly!

OCTeaparty - so I guess according to you if that was your family member they should just be left out there to fend for themselves. I can't believe you would throw out such an insensitive comment!

Glad they were found safe! Sounds like they did everything right too, a little knowledge goes a long way, and congrats to the Coast Guard for their great work as well.
OCTea Party, really? There are plenty of things the government spends money on that are worthy of grumbling about, but life saving and protecting services certainly aren't one of them. It's part of living in a civilized society. I truly don't know why some people don't get that.
