Controversial Local Pro Wrestling Event Features Star Matt Hardy, Raises $2000 For Charity
Matt Hardy regarding his controversial past: "People make mistakes, and either you fall from your mistakes or you learn from them."
Matt Hardy, a controversial former WWE and TNA Impact Wrestling star, headlined a show in the area on Saturday, which caused some contention, but delighted local fans.
The show, organized by the Mariners Lodge Free and Accepted Masons, the Barnegat PBA, and National Pro Wrestling Superstars, featured local and national wrestling heroes for a crowd of more than 250 at Barnegat High School on June 2.
The show raised more than $2000 for the PBA and the Masons, the organizers said.
Prior to the show, some parents raised concerns regarding Hardy's run-ins with the law, which included DWI and drug charges.
Hardy faced at least three different arrests, reports say, the most recent in September 2011 after a police raid of his North Carolina home revealed he had been possessing 20 vials of anabolic steroids and one hit of ecstasy, police said.
But the wrestling company sponsoring the event contended that Hardy had cleaned up his act.
“As far as my mental state of mind I’m great, regardless of whatever issues I've had," Hardy told Patch on Saturday. " People make mistakes, and either you fall from your mistakes or you learn from them.”
Hardy has performed for more than 18 years. Together with his brother Jeff he formed the “Hardy Boyz” tag team in the WWF/WWE, capturing the companies' tag team titles six times. Perhaps his best-known involvement with the WWE was in the company’s first ever “Tables, Ladders, and Chairs” match at WrestleMania which later became one of the defining moments of the WWE’s famous “Attitude Era”.
Hardy had recently adopted a new slogan, "Stronger Than Death," as part of his act.
“I feel good, I’m happy about life, I’m happier than I’ve ever been," he added.
The fans said they were not bothered by the controversy.
“That’s life, out of the ring activities [are part of] life, it can also happen in major league baseball [or] football,” said Artie Corr, 63 who attended the show with his grandson Michael who is 10.
Corr is a supporter of NPWS having attended over 15 shows with his grandson. Corr likes the personalized nature of the shows and the affordable entertainment value they provide, he said. The NPWS’ shows have bridged a gap for Corr and his grandson so they can bond together, he added.
“We see sports figures now who are on interview shows and stuff, who have had controversial backgrounds,” said Corr. “I like to give everybody a second chance because I believe that it is important. If you blow it or you mess it up or you fall back [and] the demons reach out and grab you again then you can’t complain to anybody.”
Hardy competed in the show in a tag team main event while also staying around during intermission to sign autographs for the local fans. A line wrapped around the outside of the ring area filled with fans flocking to meet Hardy.
"I actually enjoy these small shows because there’s no politics, there’s no pressure," Hardy said. "Doing one or two shows a week my body is fine, it’s not the grind of doing five shows a week and wrestling 250 shows a year.”
Also appearing on the card was Hardy’s former TNA coworker known as “Robbie E” who plays a Jersey Shore reject character. The wrestler himself is somewhat of a local legend having grown up in New Jersey and competed on the Indie Wrestling scene. The former TNA Impact Wrestling Television Champion competed in a triple threat match while also offering a seminar to the local wrestlers on how to improve their technique.
“This [character] isn’t that much different than what I was doing on the indie scene, I’m still the same kind of wacky guy or whatever granted it’s changed to more the Jersey Shore, but I go to those clubs regularly so it’s kind of like who I am,” said Robbie E.
The event featured a number of local talents including: The Equalizer, J.D Smoothie, Jersey Kidd, Nicky Oceans, and Corey Havoc among others.
The NPWS continue their tour of the tri-state area in July as they will head to Island Heights for another star-studded show. The full lineup is yet to be announced, but information on the show can be viewed at www.nwswrestling.com or www.facebook.com/nwswrestling

Thanks Nick for the fair & Balanced rite up on the event which had nearly all the ringside seats packed 5 rows back. We also want to thank Ref Fred Rubestein for his brilliance in stiring the preverbable pot with his over zealous remarks prior to the event regarding the Matt Hardy issue as ref Freds persisitence only added to the successful turnout this past Sat nite. Perhaps at one point down the road both the Masons & National Pro Wrestling LLC can return the favor and hopefully Mr. Freds so called promotion will put more than 1 row of chairs out for there next big event at Barnegat High (see related artical from 2011 within online Patch) . We want to thank the Mariners Mason for bringing us in and wish them well with all there worthwhile future fund raising efforts and we say thanks again to the vacationing in Europe and why does that matter anyway Fred but you still insist on tooting your own horn but some things never change and how unfotunate from Me your ole travlin pal Joe P and wish the family well . Take care till we meet again.

It would appear that Mr. Panzarino needs a dose of maturity and the stupidity surrounding this now-past event should come to an end. It is difficult to understand why he is given an online forum for his asinine diatribe; especially when it focuses on yesterday's news.
Why did our school district allow such a controversial event into our high school? Superintendent Woods remarks that the sponsors simply need to do some form filing is ridiculous. Does her office not bear some responsibility for making certain that the event meets the standards the district spends much money to achieve? The school board needs a definitive policy here.
Anti-bullying and DARE programs have done wonders for our youngsters. Those messages need to be perpetuated, not contradicted by what was allowed to take place on June 2 - - no matter whom the sponsor or event planner might be.

I have reviewed the author's photos. Please tell me what socially redeeming value one person hitting another (on his knees) with a chair has? This is sportsmanship?
Stomping another person who is also on his knees plays well for children?
The school board needs to review use of our schoolhouses. This malarkey might belong in a barroom or alley - - but it certainly has no place in schools.

So promoter returns to gloat and take a parting shot at a rival promoter. Great. We see enough reality shows on TV, we don't need to see one play out in Barnegat.
With that said, I hope the promoter made money. The reason I say that is he may want to consider going back to school to learn spelling, syntax and punctuation, since it appears that his efforts were wasted when he was younger.
As I said in a previous post, the entire message of pro wrestling is a bad one to send to kids, as it doesn't allow them to work out differences between kids via dialogue, it just suggests you beat the hell out of anyone who you have a difference with.
Perhaps both promoters have seen far too much pro wrestling, and have forgotten that concept themselves. Hopefully they will both read this and learn.

Gratuitous violence being brought into our schools sends a horrible message to the same children who are being taught to refrain from such anti-social conduct.
I have decided to take this matter forward. I have printed out the articles, comments and photos from Patch. I am sending them to the NJ Dept. of Education. The quote from the Barnegat Superintendent of Schools is shocking. Miss Wood needs to get her act together.
Here is a quote from the current anti-bullying policy of the school system:
"The Board of Education prohibits acts of harassment, intimidation, or bullying of a pupil. A safe and civil environment in school is necessary for pupils to learn and achieve high academic standards. Harassment, intimidation, or bullying, like other disruptive or violent behaviors, is conduct that disrupts both a pupil's ability to learn and a school's ability to educate its pupils in a safe and disciplined environment. since pupils learn by example."
What kind of example was set by Saturday's display of brutality, Miss Wood?

What are you talking about? The school, a public school, allowed use of its gym for a Saturday night fundraiser for a local organization's charities. No student was forced to attend this event. There were no classes going on at this time. Your comment has gone off on a tangent.

Having read both articles it becomes clear that the issue here began when a group of parents voiced legitimate concerns about the nature of this event. Next, someone provided links to articles that detailed the criminal conduct of one of the performers.
Tell me, would this performer be eligible for hiring as a teacher, school bus driver, lunchroom aide, etc? But yet he is welcomed into a public school and somewhat lauded.
At a minimum, the school administration must take ownership and institute policies whereby anybody allowed into a school to perform, lecture, etc. needs their backgrounds checked.
What does "Stronger than Death" mean? Does it mean you should risk your life thinking you can survive no matter what?
Just words? Not to a young child who sees a "hero" in the middle of a wrestling ring. Next time an organization wants to raise funds, selling cookies remains the better and more ethical way to do so.
Keep this garbage out of our schools!

I attended the event and thought it was great. Everyone in attendance knew what they were in for and we all had a good laugh. Wrestling is a form of entertainment. It has been for years. No one is teaching this to any kids in any school. These comments are silly. The event took place on a Saturday night in a public high school. And parents...yes parent brought their kids to see this. Just as my parents took me when I was a child. Its the parents job to teach the kids that this is entertainment. Not your job...not the school board....not anyone but the parents. Great job again Saturday.

Present this "entertainment" in a private building, David; not one funded by tax dollars. Barnegat High is a school, not an arena.
Viewing photos showing one "athlete" hitting a man who is on his knees with a chair is all responsible people who keep things in a mature perspective need to see to realize this rubbish appeals to people with a wanton blood lust. How do you tell anyone it is fake when they see a person being stomped while laying helplessly on the ground, David? Was the sound of the chair hitting the person fake? It was quite real and it was brutal; the conduct of savage thugs and hooligans that best appeals to people of the same ilk.
Not in the schools, David. Pay to see it in an arena. Just not in a school system that advocates anti-bullying and anti-drug agendas.
The administration and school board are responsible for whatever happens on school property. Clear violence and brutality have no place in a school.
Saturday night was a disgrace. The next time you see a child emulate one of the things that went on in a wrestling ring, be sure to ask them if they learned it in a Barnegat school.

I will speak to my children and ask them if they did. I too pay taxes to that school Mr Thomas and last week in your statement you said if one chooses to attend then so be it. So soon your tone has changed. No one forced anyone to attend. And if parents didn't know where their kids were, who's fault is that. There was no fighting..bullying or anything you state. Great job by the school to allow for a fun event to take place. Mr Thomas maybe if you attended you would have seen the smiles and laughs that were taking place in the crowd. It was a great time.

4:04 pm on Tuesday, June 5, 2012
David, your recollection of my statement is correct. Keep in mind that the statement was made before evidence existed as to just what we were allowing into a public building. Now that I have seen the author's photos allow me to proffer an informed opinion.
I will say it over and over, the pictures in this article say all that needs to be said. The "smiles and laughs" you cite can be expressed any place. And I am forced to ask, what person "smiles or laughs" when they see someone getting whacked with a chair whilst they are on their knees?
No bullying??? Surely you jest! Please, what do you call it? Kicking and hitting a person who is helpless. Give me a break.
Let us agree to disagree. My sentiments and supporting documentation will be sent to the proper parties. You have persuaded me to do that. Please feel free to write in support of continuing to sanction this tripe in a school building.

Mr Thomas...do you watch the NFL, MLB, NHL or NBA? Are these sports we should take away from our children also? There are examples of horrible acts occurring from athletes (YES ATHLETES) in every sport. Let the parents parent. You worry about your family...I will worry about mine.

Yes, sir, I watch professional sports. However, they are not played on a foundation of brutality, stereotypes and other such anti-social outrage.
Take your family anywhere you choose, sir. But keep this balderdash where it belongs.
The photos above speak volumes. Nothing has been colored or left to doubt. Chairs, kicking people when they are down and helpless - - and you say this is okay to present in a school that boasts of its' anti-bullying policies?

Eric is correct. This crap might be appropriate for Madison Square Garden. It does NOT belong in our schools.
What's next for Barnegat schools? This was a display of sanctioned violence put on with the blessing of the school Superintendent. She said so herself in the first article. Her judgment in this matter was abominable. Look at the photos. The photos tell the truth.
Let us see what the superintendent says now. She never knew her school would allow a display where people beat each other with chairs? She didn't know that professional wrestling is an ultra-violent display?

If you dont like it it, dont come, dont buy a ticket, and thats fine by everyone. You dont want your kid to play with toy guns, then dont buy one, but do you really need to jam your opinion over and over in peoples faces? The funds raised are turned around back into our community. Put some energy into doing something good instead of dumping on someone else. And if you are just the competitions buddies, then ok, we get the point...the horse is dead.

Have you wrestling events, play with guns, do whatever you want to do; I am not your keeper. Just stop sending mixed messages to kids. They have enough on their minds nowadays.

Yes I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion for sure. Yes I biased, I am a fan. I also will leave it as agreeing to disagree, the only difference is I wouldn't expend so much energy demanding this and that from people who approved the event. Mr. Rahtjen, I am not in a position to "demand" anything from anyone, now am I? Besides, you and I are gentlemen and "demanding" is not a gentlemanly manifestation, is it?
My one point of consternation is that you insinuated I am a "buddy" of your competitor; which is simply untrue. And while we are on that subject, I respectfully suggest you read Mr. Wise's comment as relates to the person with whom you elected to partner to produce this event. Mr. Wise's comment is quite correct in my opinion and that of others who spoke out in this forum.

What has happened to our society? If the man paid his debt for his crime, how is any different than Plaxico Burress, Warren Moon, Michael Vick, Charlie Sheen, Darryl Strawberry, etc. getting a second chance at life? I would not invite any of these individuals to babysit my children or teach them morality, but in a controlled environment, such as a sporting event or concert, there are being paid to do a specific task and should be able to do so. Secondly, there are plenty of individuals in our day and age that cannot afford to go to an event held at a stadium. If affordable entertainment can be brought down to our communities, I view it as a positive. If this isn't your brand of entertainment, you do not have to go.
To address a comment about selling cookies. I'm surprised all the concerned citizens worried about the well being of our children didn't jump on this one. Here's some scary statistics about childhood obesity:
http://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/obesity/facts.htm
So I as a citizen and parent, I have the right and obligation to do what I feel is good for my children. My choice is to go to events that interest them, discuss with them the difference between real and make believe, and get them out of the pantry, where those cookies are waiting, and in the backyard playing cops and robbers, army, tag, basketball, scootering, etc. The sole truth is if you are looking for role models for your children, start with yourself and work your way out.

Hey Jonathan, move to New York. Lord Bloomberg is legislating obesity away. He won't put daily gym workouts back in NYC schools but he will ban large soda portions.
Remarkable he became a millionaire. If I want a 32oz soda and can only buy a 16oz bottle I simply buy two bottles.
You miss the point Pal. The website Eric provided illustrates the number of pro wrestlers who died as a result of drugs and very many were under 35. Do some research on this insignificant creep Matt Hardy. He used and sold drugs. His girlfriend turned him in to the cops because she feared him.
Are we now welcoming convicted drug users and sellers into our schools. Are those the role models you want your kids to latch onto. There are hours of free TV that show wrestling. You don't have to go to an arena that charges admission.

I firmly support the outcry concerning this exhibition. Money for charitable causes can be raised anyplace. Using one of the schools my child attends for nonsense like this is not acceptable. That is my opinion and I do not make the policies.
It is best left to the overseers of education to decide if the type of spectacle that is depicted in the photographs is appropriate in a school. It does not matter that class was not in session. This article memorializes a display of brutality that was allowed.
I will not fault the school superintendent. I do not believe she was aware of what was going to take place. I do not think an educated woman endorses what is shown in the pictures. I would like to think she has learned a lesson and will be more alert and investigate before the fact in the future.
