Coming To LBI Puts People "At Risk Of Being Arrested," Official Says

Police presence keeping people away from island, but it is to keep them safe, and away from health risks, coordinator says.

New Jersey State Police are now patrolling the bay between Manahawkin and Long Beach Island, so "anyone who should not be coming [to LBI] puts themselves at risk of being arrested," according to Beach Haven's Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator.

In an instant message interview last night, Beverly Tromm told Patch that she has been on the island with her husband, Bill, Beach Haven's emergency management coordinator, and others since the start of the storm.

"I got to my home today for the first time," Tromm said. "There is no electricity,

no sewers,

no water.

There are major gas leaks here

."

It is these problems, among others, that led to  police in Harvey Cedars issuing a statement that it would likely be at least 10 days before people could return to Long Beach Island.

Many points in Long Beach Island were swept over, with the bay and ocean waters meeting, particularly in the Holgate area. This has resulted in widespread disruption of  utilities that vary in severity by geographic region, according to Harvey Cedars Police Chief Tom Preiser.

According to eyewitness accounts, Holgate, Loveladies, Harvey Cedars, North Beach, and Beach Haven, were hit hardest by the storm.

Similar to reported damage in sections of Stafford, numerous homes have sustained  substantial damage, major beach erosion; and many roads are layered in "several feet of beach sand," Preiser said. Boil water alerts have been issued on Cedar Bonnet Island, due to low water pressure.

"We need to get our infrastructure up before we can let anyone here who is not essential to completing those tasks

," Tromm added. She said that is the reason for the police patrols along the bay, and for the delay in returns to LBI. "We can do our jobs easier and quicker if people would just get it that we will let them in when it is not a health risk, and when it is safe."

Tromm noted that the responders have been working 12 hours shifts, with short naps in between.

"A lot of us [who sent family to the mainland before the storm] are missing our kids," she wrote. "We have breakdowns from time to time, but then we take a few minutes, go get a deep breath of air, and come back in and do our job again, because we love this town, this island, and what we do

."

Editor's note: Tromm invited Patch to share this album, created by her son using photos from rescue responders in Beach Haven, which details some of the destruction left following the storm. She noted several requests have come in asking about specific homes, but she stressed that rescue responders are mainly concentrating on infrastructure issues, instead of individual homes at this time.

Good article Colleen but why not define who should and should not be coming to LBI. I issue i faced yesterday was more frustrating than the unthinkable devastation that i know waits for me. I traveled 2 hours to get to my house in Mud City and was told i was not able to enter the area. However, several of my neighbors were given the go ahead to not only enter but have dumpsters already at their house have begun cleanup. This is fact, as i have talked to that neighbor, To add insult to injury, I was told that i am not a resident because i don't live there 12 months out of the year. How does that make any sense when my taxes are based on 12 months out of the year. Perhaps, the intent is a good one and that is to keep people safe. However, there is a MAJOR inconsistency in how they are enforcing who enters and who does not and that will cause people to get frustrated and take it out on the messengers. My suggestion - how about a news article that gives more details (i.e. anyone that should not be coming to LBI) so people are spared more agony and greif than they are already dealing with. We're all stressed but we are all trying to cope and help and not having CLEAR and CONSISTENT enforcement is adding to what americans are best known for...the ability to heal, help and move on.

Hi Partner, I can understand the confusion in parts of Stafford..here is our latest post on that issue.
http://barnegat-manahawkin.patch.com/articles/limited-re-entry-to-begin-in-beach-haven-west .
As far as LBI is concerned, people are still being asked by emergency personnel to leave the island, and reentry is not permitted for anyone at least 10 days, according to Harvey Cedars police. Permits are not even being honored..here's some more specifics on that ...
http://barnegat-manahawkin.patch.com/articles/no-power-telephone-creating-problems-for-stafford-police..Hope it helps, and I am so sorry about your frustration. Keeping good thoughts for you - Colleen

The images that we've all seen on television are playing themselves out in real time here in New Jersey. "Citizens" being met at bridges by armed guards telling them that they can't go to their homes. In most scenarios there is no valid reason why people cannot return to their homes permanently or at least to gather and salvage what they can to piece their lives together in whatever capacity. I've had contact with countless people that are currently occupying thier homes on some of the barrier islands and the majority of the areas are OK and accessible. Especially, in some of the more southern barrier island communities. I don't want to hear "It's for your own safety"....tell that to someone who has a perfectly fine dwelling waiting for them in an area that hasn't been negatively impacted and they are staying in a shelter. This is a crucial moment where those that have been impacted can gather items and salvage them. Photos, important documents, etc....Not to mention, the looting has begun. The press is not reporting on it but it is happening. The variables are vast and it's easy to say do what you are told for your own good but that doesn't apply to all the invididuals being impacted.

Hi Colleen,

As I read the above article I was wondering if there was any way we could be of help to the emergency management people. Our family has a home down there and the videos look promising that the damage is minimal compared to others. We love LBI and my heart breaks for those that are working on the island now and how emotionally they are tied to the island. Could we bring food to a drop off spot that could be brought in to them? Our prayers are with them for comfort and strength.

We just moved back to Beach Haven two weeks before the storm after moving to Alaska for work in 2010. Now we have no jobs and maybe no home. The authorities should be giving residents more detailed information about the neighborhoods to try and alleviate concerns over our futures. If a video of the island from a helicopter has been taken, they should make it available.

I saw the necn video and see my property at .45 seconds in. I am fortunate that my place appears to be untouched. I have done numerous Katrina relief trips and Irene trips to help clean up and rebuild. I would love to get acces to my place and then assist with the clean up. Sooner the better

I couldnt even watch this whole video. Dock road where I live (d) is still flooded. LBI is such a beautiful place with beautiful people in it. Thats why me and my dog moved there. Just last month. :( I'm so sorry this has happened to everyone...I am so sad for everyone. And please, don't fight and complain...they are doing the best they can to keep everyone safe. We have our lives, and nothing can replace that. We can always rebuild. We have to be with each other now, not against each other.

Partner, You need to chill. The people down here , these are there FULL time homes, not vacation homes. Things here are a disaster area. Be happy you have you FULL time home intact. Shame on you. You should be offering help to your neighbors and this community, no complaining about your THINGS .

I've got relief experience and would gladly help clean up an rebuild for you or anyone else affected by this tragedy. Please stay safe and my prayers are with you and you family.

People aren't allowed to their houses beacuse the streets are flooded with sand. And even if they oils get to their house there ark broken sewer water and gas lines all over the plac as well as downed power lines and plenty of other hazards. It would not be safe to let the public on. Too many people on that island right now would only cause more distruction. Crews will be on the island boarding up people's houses and salvaging why can be salvaged. Everything that is being done is being done protect you an your homes.

Hi. My 80 year old grandparents have owned their home on Milcreek for 30 years. They called today and were told they would be allowed to enter but only the two of them and clean up efforts weren't to begin just initial assessment and gathering of possessions. They were also told they needed to clean themselves upon leaving. They are to old to do anything themselves. We got in the house on Tuesday with no problem. I am just wondering if anyone knows why they can't bring family and start to clean out some of the mess in an effort to mitigate the damage? It seems if it is safe enough to let people in it would be safe enough to start clean up. Not complaining just wondering if anyone had addition info, we are all heartbroken over all the destruction. Thank you in advance for any help.

This is all horrible, agreed, if you can't get to your homes as we can't, there are many many places that need help. We are trying to feed and cloth thousands of ppl. Just ask, someone needs help and someone can help you.

Maybe this will help people. http://storms.ngs.noaa.gov/storms/sandy/ if you go to this site NOAA weather you can look up the address of your home. It will show you before and after images from satalite. It is a bit hard to figure out,but you can see if your house is still standing.

My home too has 4ft of water inside(so I am told) I do not live there. All owners on LBI are faced with the same devastation, some more than others. Patience, its for all of our safety.
