Despite Gov's Assurance, Thousands Still in the Dark

Christie said all power in NJ would be restored by now

Despite assurances by Gov. Christie that the entire state would have power again by yesterday, there are thousands still in the dark in New Jersey, including 601 in just Monmouth and Ocean counties, according to the JCP&L outage map.

As of 3:15 p.m. Monday, there are 441 outages in Monmouth and 160 in Ocean and about 3,100 outages among JCP&L customers in the 13 counties it serves, the map shows.

In Morris County alone there are 739 JCP&L customers reporting outages.

PSE&G has 278 outages on Monday afternoon, including 19 outages caused by Sandy and 259 caused by the nor'easter.

Atlantic Electric has restored power to all customers who can safely be restored, said Frank Tedesco, company spokesman. He said there are 2,000 to 2,500 customers who cannot be safely restored due to flooding or structural damage to homes and meter boxes.

"Some of those homes may not even be there anymore," Tedesco said. "But as people return to the island and have their homes inspected, we will restore power as quickly as possible to those that can be safely restored."

In Ocean County, reported outages include 13 in Point Pleasant Borough and 31 in Point Pleasant Beach.

In Point Borough, tenants at a home on Route 88 report a damaged pole and an ongoing outage. Councilman Chris Leitner said he would try to find out when JCP&L is going to correct the problem and restore power.

In Point Beach, Patch has received outage complaints from residents at: 215 Central Ave.; 9 Beachcomber Lane; Sea Gardens Condominiums, 330 Route 35; 1603 West St.; and the Bay Point Condos on Maryland Avenue, just north of Bay Head.

Residents at all of the above locations report that the meter boxes have not been slapped with red stickers. If they had, that would indicate that the boxes have to be removed by JCP&L, replaced by private electricians and inspected by the municipality before JCP&L can restore power to those sites.

Patch has given addresses of those reporting outages to a spokesman for JCP&L, who said he is looking into it and will provide an update when they have it.

The JCP&L website says outages should be reported, but a number of local residents have complained that their reports don't lead to restoration or they are put on hold for long periods or cannot get through on the line.

To report a JCP&L outage, call 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877).

Patch will update local outage information for Point Beach and Point Borough as it becomes available.

These counts are laughable. I know hundreds out in Point Beach and Toms River alone. JCP&L is a joke. Really wish the government would step in and penalize them for this unacceptable performance. Stop being REACTIVE and start being PROACTIVE.

Day 15 without power in Silverton section of Toms River. Cable guys have been around our streets more than JCP&L. Will I automatically get a credit on my cable bill, since I can't watch TV or use computer?

But this credit will come only IF a customer will inform the office, not coming automatically; and this will be within Dec bill, not Nov......

Many homes in Pt Beach do not have power due to electric meters and/or panels being below the water line. It is simply not safe to re-energize those houses. I know the Maryland Ave apartments had their panels below the water level during the storm.

Government step up, thats a joke, They sent home hundreds of workers from Alabama, and Tenn, because they weren't union. Also FEMA wasn't even on the scene until 4 days after the hurricane. One Trucking company sent 10 loads of supplies and no one would authorize payment. So, they turned around and sent 5 back. The 5 that remained were never paid for so simply donated. If you want to be proactive get the whole story. However, don't ask a politician ask the real people who are living it.

Beach_N8iv,

I felt like you once, until I read this first-hand account of an Oklahoma crew at Rivoli's Restaurant a couple of days ago. Kinda debunks that Snopes link you provided, that says in short that NJ utilities are accepting ALL offers of help. I'm not so sure that's their stance anymore. I'll let the restaurant owner's page & photo do the talking, at least it will give you some food for thought, if nothing more.

I find it hard to believe there are only 160 customers without power in Ocean County. I know plenty of neighborhoods in Brick, Point and Silverton that aren't red tagged and don't have power, yet this is what JCP&L is reporting. How can they get away with this?? I do commend Point Patch for investigating the issue. At least someone is doing something!!

Really???? Are Brick residents aware that the utility company is requesting the owner's to apply for a DCN or DCR and hire professional electricians at $150.00 to evaluate their gas meters and pass inspection in order to have their power turned on? How about this. Stop paying your utility bills until forced to and let the utility company experience cash flow issues. When contacted notify them the check will be coming tomorrow afternoon and continue the practice until its absolutely necessary to pay.

Baywood, Mandalay & Shore Acres does not have power yet and we were told they don't know when we will get it. There are 100's of homes in this area. To say Brick only has 10 homes out is outrageous! If this is what JCP&L is telling the BPU and Governer...they are lying thru their teeth!

you're absolutely right I live in Baywood, and although a crew was in our neighborhood a week ago we still don't have power...plus there are rumors that apparently now we have to get the house checked out and given an inspection before power will be restored...I hope that the insurance company understands why the house is moldy.

As far as a cable bill credit, call Comcast and your call is directed to Anthony in the Dominican Republic.

Good Luck Point in Bayville, Berkeley Township, gets a single garbage pick up a week. (Took 2 weeks to get that going.) End of story and the Mayor announced before Sandy he was going to raise our property taxes yet again to cover the shortfall in his revenue pot made by those who left due to foreclosure.

Now what Mayor? I don't think we in Good Luck Point should have to pay any taxes at all for the entire length of the ongoing debacle. The once a week pick up with the trucks that crush and break our cans routinely might be the only thing open for discussion.

You have two civil servant jobs with pensions and all the rest of it. How about giving up the Mayor's spot to someone who has management skills and who will work full time for we who seem to you to be simply endless pots of money.

The entire end of Drum Point Road in Brick is without power. This article needs to be corrected.

My place back on the water is Shore Acres should not be sent power so I understand them not turning on the power but the house I'm staying at on Spark just a few blocks from my place is fine. No water came anywhere near here although we remain without power.

If it's easy to cut power to those who don't pay their bills then why not cut those who had water damage and leave the rest who were untouched and then turn on the circuit.

Seems too easy to me and it's only a matter of time before the residents take the issue to the doorstep of the governor and JCPL.

A quickie inspection would be to drive around at night and see which houses are lit up by generatiors (which means, for the most part, the electric is safe) especially if it appears the entire household is powered (via back feeding the circuits via generator) and turning those folks back on? Rocket science??? Hardly. Do something for crying out load! If the house is black with a pile of debris out front, then investigate further (if need be), but for the obvious, use common sense. Our house is without power, but being back fed by the generator and is lit up, including (very visible from the outside) TV's and various lights on, which means, we're good to go -- so light us up here! Come on already!!!!!

I just loaned a generator to someone in Shore Acres. There are LOTS of houses without power just in that area. From what I'm told inspectors came around to see if people's breaker panels were submerged. Are they going to keep the entire neighborhood dark until everyone's panel is replaced if need be?

I hope people aren't back-feeding their panels without disconnecting from the incoming line. That can only cause more problems.

You all think that its just as easy as flippin a switch? I feel for all you people without power, but you have to know that what they are doing is for the good of all... it 3 homes have meters under water and the next 5 don't and they flip the switch there goes a major fire...Just happened in Bayville...it only takes one house to have a short and if its tied to all the other homes and they flip the power on Boom goes all the homes. Every house is tied into each other. Its just not as easy as you think. And really you think Christie is purposely NOT powering your homes ? Be real here... Rome wasn't built in a day. And those of you lucky enough to have your power back on and have a generator , why not lend it out to another family that isn't as fortunate as you, like Chris just did.

I believe you are missing the point. The acceptance of liability is the issue and I agree pre cautions should be taken; however, the process and plan should be clearly conveyed to the homeowners. For example, the town inspectors are going door to door to analyze the situation and determine if the area meets their requirements as a whole before flipping the switch and their advising homeowners to be home when the inspection occurs.Okay, so when will this start, where are they planning to go, what is considered an "area". I have spoken to several JCP&L employees and they are confused with the process. Some homeowners were advised to hire licensed electricians to check their electric panel BEFORE the inspectors come. Really?????

Denise,

I don't mean to be a stickler of semantics either as my heart goes out to all these people still without power... But like Tom, I also heard Gov Christie say "most" in one of his speeches and had an immediate feeling that many people would take it to mean "all".... I don't totally trust audio clips which can easily be altered, so I searched for actual videos and found this one. Jump ahead to around 3:12 or 3:15 where he's talking about Sunday... then he does say "most" of New Jersey around 3:22. I hope you take a minute to review this. Can't make this stuff up either!

I guess this will sound silly and I admit, I don't know the answer, so maybe someone can educate me here: If they can turn off a single home for non-payment, why can't they turn each home on individually? In other words, for example, if there are, hypothetically, 50 homes on one grid/switch, why couldn't they disconnect service to each house individually, like they do when payments are not made, inspect those 50 homes, and turn them back on one-by-one as they are deemed safe?

I'm not an expert, but I imagine they would have to first manually disconnect everyone who's panel is not deemed safe. From what I understand the overhead lines are not energized. Energizing them would bring everyone online at the same time.

Mesmerize: I was accused of misquoting the governor regarding his appearance in Somerset on Thurs., which is what my article linked to. I did no such thing as I demonstrated above. So you think 101.5 altered the audio capturing the governor's quotes? Really? Please address that to them and let me know how that goes. And AP, the newspapers, radio stations and TV stations, which all reported the same thing, were all wrong? Really? Now you have found the governor's quotes from the DAY AFTER he was in Somerset where he still did not say "most." He said, "We'll have almost 100 percent restoration by Sat. night." I listed to it twice and took notes. And later in the audio he says "Power will be returned to their homes." Still does not say "most." I have a ton of work to do and really cannot afford to spend more time on this. The ironic part is I personally do not believe the outages, whether they were brief or still going on today, are his fault. Just noted that he made a prediction that did not come to pass. News12NJ was referring to it as "the governor's deadline." I truly hope all are restored soon. I'm hearing stories from people that are heartbreaking and I'm sure we all just want it to end.

Denise,

You know what, first of all you didn't state which speech you were referring to, and secondly why would you only focus on one speech among many, and not consider any LATER speeches that perhaps contain more updated news/info by the Gov? Why focus on an audio speech from the day before this one here as you kindly pointed out?

And yes, I wouldn't have provided a link and where to start listening if the word in question wasn't there. Please listen to the video again, he did say "most".

I'll be more specific. Listen from 3:13 to 3:25 mins: "Now by Sunday, we will have substantial and ALMOST completely realized progress on all of these front and life will be back for MOST of New Jersey to normal come Sunday."

Then shortly later, he says about power: "It's my BELIEF is that we will have ALMOST 100% percent restoration...."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mggR0lYhd0

Look, I don't like to split hairs, and I haven't particularly liked Gov Christie up to this point either, so I'm in no way sticking up for the guy at all. But this video shows he did used such ambiguous words as "almost", "most", "my belief", etc, which some people either failed to hear, or are now taking out of context and assuming it was meant to be a sure thing. That's why so many people are angry now. I for one never believed everyone would have power by Sunday though, and ambiguous speeches like this explain why.

The Governor now owes us a list not just by town buy by each and every neighborhood showing the exact date and estimated time for the power to be restored to We the People.

And I hope the power company bills are returned to them en masse so that they cannot benefit by asking to be paid for zero service and miserable repair.

So let's have it Governor - or drop off a new generator at every single house that has been living in the dark and cold for weeks. Stop the double and triple dippers and you will have the money to pay for those generators.

Love Mayors with 2 or 3 civil "servant" paychecks and pensions. Obviously there are not enough hours in the day for them to perform any of those so called jobs properly.

And yet we are made to pay for them - and their sloppy work, to boot. Enough.

I like Christie but am concerned about his lack of management skills. No, it's not his fault FEMA turned out to be another way to steal money from We the People, but surely by now we should have coastal building codes in place. (Xerox NC and Florida.) Some people seem to be getting building permits in an effort to patch up things as they were in an effort to avoid yet again building to hurricane standards. No ten foot pilings for them! What tie down straps?

The Governor is a lawyer and coastal building codes are laws. Where are they, Sir?

As to the power company, I am on the water and can see ten miles down the Bay and last night I noticed the little power in Bayville and even the usually very well cared for Lacey, had been cut back even further than it was a week ago. All I could see were a few generator powered buildings and 9 or so probably Route 9 street lights - or possibly GSP entrance lights.

The President of the power company ought to be replaced now and the Governor needs to at least accept email from we who are in the cold and dark rather than spreading those emails automatically to the departments which are the most guilty. The governor doesn't seem to want to hear from us and that is a bad sign and shows in part why there is no leadership of zillions of civil "servants" who in my section of Bayville have done nothing while they earn 136% more than the general population. And all that OT is building them up while they watch us crumble.

all i know is as I type this lying in my bed in Seawood Harbor...I'm freezing cold and my little generator can hardly power my space heater to make a puff of heat never mind get my bedroom to a livable temp. As the temperature drops, pipes are going to start bursting and the remains of our already broken houses will be reduced to an even less livable state. Ironically, I noticed today my JCP&L autopay went through on my bank account...they didn't seem to miss a beat on their billing, sorry that they can't spend the money to have workers on the job 24/7 to restore power after 15 days. It will take someone elderly freezing to death in their home before anything will be done to motivate these clowns.
