Genuardi's in Barnegat Set to Close This Weekend

Smaller Wawa also closing.

This weekend, Barnegat Township will lose its only supermarket, Genuardi's on West Bay Avenue, and a smaller Wawa convenience store, which is also located on West Bay Avenue.

"Can you believe it is closing," one resident was overheard saying to another in the parking lot of the Genuardi's store earlier this week.

Despite the fact that Genuardi employees were informed of the closure in October, many township residents are upset at seeing their town's only supermarket close.

At the recent Township Committee meeting, several residents expressed dismay at the closure, and wondered how the closure would affect other businesses located in the same area as Genuardi's.

"Having no food store in this town is a travesty," said Barnegat resident Larry Cataldo.

Joseph Provdo, who works at Marchiono's Pizza and Pasta, which is located a few stores away from Genuardi's, said Genuardi's has been scaling back operations since the closure was announced. He noted that even though the shelves are basically empty at Genuardi's this week, the pizza place still was doing a good business.

"We have the best pizza around, so I am not as worried," Provdo said. Regardless, he said, several business owners have expressed an interest in looking at their rental agreements to see if they would need to pay as much toward rent, since the anchor of the property will now be vacant.

At the recent Township Committee meeting, several committee members discussed the rental issue. Committeman Martin Lisella said "once an anchor store leaves, the rest of the tenants should have a reduction."

Safeway, Inc., the supermarket chain's parent company, announced earlier this year it would sell 16 Pennsylvania Genuardi's locations to Giant Food Stores and either close or sell off the remainder of the company's stores in the Philadelphia market, which includes southern New Jersey.

The Barnegat location, open since 1999, was among those stores which was up for sale; it was not part of the Giant deal.

In a statement released to the press earlier this year,  Steve Neibergall, President of Safeway's Eastern Division, said the company was planning on focusing resources in those "operating areas where we have a stronger presence."

Wawa, meanwhile, opened a larger convenience store in Barnegat, and a manager at the smaller store that is closing told Patch that most of the employees would be relocated to either the larger location or the Pebble Beach location.

I only used this store for picking up one or two items, never a full shopping because their prices were always too high. Wish ShopRite, who has stores in every town but ours, would pick it up. We don't need a super ShopRite, this store would be a great location for them.

That store is too small for a shoprite, what happened to the Barnegat crossing and do we need another plaza if we can't keep stores in the existing plaza's. Thats a major reason to support your local stores wether it's groceries or clothes or anything, this is our town and no one wants to see it look like an abandoned ghost town!

I don't think that their prices were more, I have been going there for years and with the exception of a few items that I would not purchase at Genuiardis due to the prices their prices were the same or better than most of Shop Rites stuff. I had a gift card to Shoprite given to me so I went there and was surprised at how high their prices were. For many items they were much higher than Genuiardis prices.

I believe we had a chance for a Shop Rite a couple of years ago. People complained there would be too much traffic. Shop Rite ended up in Waretown and guess what people, we still have the traffic.

It is a shame that Barnegat with 22,000 residents won't have its own supermarket. We now will have to go to Waretown of Manahawkin. What has our Town Fathers done for us? Look at Lighthouse Rd. Trees have been cut down, but nothing is happening.

Several years ago I was over charged for several cans of Progresso

as the manager. I explained that the young woman who scanned in the
purchase was not providing the advertised price ... the final bill was huge
at a larger retail price ... professional but firm that the product was not
providing the correct computer price ... based upon that issue, she was
argumentative and to the point of calling the Barnegat Police to have me
removed from the premises ... since that day I have never returned nor
responded to any broadside advertising pieces that went on to enjoy the
Stafford recycle bins ... for many years ... glad that they are gone ... as
for many do not miss it's style of business.
A complaint indicated they would investigate the matter, but did indicate
that the incident apparently does not reach the level of calling a policeman
to have me escorted out of any Genuardi stores.
Dedicated to Shop Rite since the start ... knew the family who started the
famous food chain stores ...
Got heated and upset to the extent

We should start a write in campaign to Wegman's to come. Normally Wegman's and Shopright want to biuld new. But Wegman's is OK with mulitl-level stores and a second level could be built over the old Genuardi's.

Another alternative is to use the store as an Antique/Collectible Center. I know of at least 20 dealers who would be interested if the price was right. This would allow PNC to stay in the building and would bring visitors to the shopping center, without competition. Genuardi's competed with Sub Busters and Marchioni's

I notice several posts here that say they only shopped there for a few items and did the bulk of their shopping at other stores. They also said the same thing when the late great A&P closed.
But in both cases they don't want these stores to close. Stores, and grocery stores in particular, don't stay in business to be convenient for a few people, they stay in business because of volume.

Agreed, but by the same token, businesses do not stay in business without being competitve within their category. Genuardi's turned away customers with their high prices and instead relied on their location for convenience. Genuardi's was well known in the Barnegat community, and had they offered better prices, they would have attracted more business. When it comes to feeding a family, the $20-$50 price difference over ShopRite is a hefty sum of money that could be put to better use. I don't want to see it go either, but they failed to get with the program. Survival of the fittest. Here's hoping for a new movie theater, and/or Retro Fitness to take Genuardi's place, and maybe we can do away with the Baregat Crossings [soon-to-be] disaster.

Top Tomato thrives in Brick...they are a specialty market and many people in the senior communities (which Brick has many) like to be able to pick up a prepared meal or decent meat and produce (which Shop Rite does not have) or decent fresh baked bread...With all the senior communities on West Bay Ave, I think Top Tomato would thrive here!

I think Barnegat might be the only town in NJ without its own super market. This town is crazy!!! You hit the nail on the head Jane Doe - time to vote OUT the incompetent Mayor and Committee... Barnegat is in need of a major change at the TOP, otherwise, there's no hope for this town, OR it's tax payers. There goes the ANCHOR store out of that shopping center, that's definitely going to hurt the smaller stores in that plaza for sure.

Is funny everyone is worried about PNC - why? Does all of Barnegat bank only at the tiny PNC bank within Genardis - when there is Ocean First, TD Bank and other numerous banks around the area? If everyone is so concerned, contact PNC corporate and ask them what they will be doing with the PNC bank within Genardis.

Move the Police Dept. and Town Hall folks into the soon to be vacant Genardis, then bulldoze the existing, aged and outdated Municipal complex... Oh wait... Can't do that, because what would happen to that new non-essential 2nd memorial that was just built...

Maybe the Mayors office can become the new PNC bank for everyone, after all, the Twp's account has been fattened up from the high property tax payments and there's no shame misappropriating State Open Space Funds, so maybe Twp. Tax Payers can pull from that fund as well....

I am so with you Anne. I don't know why people say their prices were so high. I have found that Shoprite prices were just as high and sometimes higher when I went there once in a while. Genuardis had a few things that were too expensive like laundry detergent and shampoo, but their prices and sales were comprable to other supermarkets and I loved going there. I don't know where I am going to go now since I really don't like Shoprite, plus it's so inconvenient.

Chris, Yes they are times very poorly, but most of those turns, especially the one turning from W Bay right onto Barnegat Blvd used to be ok to turn right on red, they finally get around to getting the right turners their own lane then put a big sign up NO RIGHT ON RED!!! I just shook my head when I first saw that and said I think Barnegat twnshp thinks people here are stupid or blind that they can't look for the one or two cars that cross W Bay ave in the time your stuck at that Red Light. And a few other spots that are just crazy that you have to sit through the red light to turn right. Ugh, I don't even want toget going on this again haha, I go through a speach to whoever designed it like this every time I sit at one of those red lights and it's perfectly clear to be able to turn. I think they wanted more oportunities to give out tickets or something.

The intersections or parts of intersections where there are No Turn on Red (and there are only three) signs are where there is limited visability on the cross streets.
Barnegat Blvd & Bay Ave and Bay Ave, and Bay Ave and Lighthouse.

One of the problems with right turn on red is that the people making those turns go into the intersection as if they had a green light. The Right Turn on Red rule actually is "Right Turn on Red, AFTER Full Stop and if There Are No Vehicles on the Cross Street".

Rick, There are 5 spots that now are No Right On Red, in Barnegat, 3 of which used to be ok to turn right on red, and I think everyone knows the rule to stop then go which is what I always did. And the places where there we are not allowed to turn right on red do not have limited visibility, and everytime I am at those lights, there are at the most maybe 2 or 3 cars driving that I would have had to watch for. The visibility is fine in those areas. The only spot that is still ok to turn right on red is from Gunning River road onto West Bay Ave. Rt 9 onto WBay is No right on red, Barnegat Blvd onto WBay ave NoRonRed and so on. Visibility is all fine and clear in those areas. Maybe some people went through them as if they were green, I haven't seen that, anyone I had been behind did the stop look and go thing.

It's a shame the Genuardi's is closing, but ever since they opened and I saw the prices, I knew if their pricing structure didn't change, it would just be a matter of time before they closed. At the Township Committee Meeting last Monday I suggested to they go after a Top Tomato or a Trader Joe's. We need a more specialty type of store in that spot to have it survive. Another grocery store won't make it unless it's one of the big chains to compete with the ShopRites and Wegman's would suffer the same situation as Genuardi's. Lisella said he's gone after both of those stores but they won't even talk to him. Well, maybe someone else should contact them and convince them that Barnegat would be a great place to do business because out demographics are so diverse. They need to be more persistent. For years I've been asking the Township Committee why we don't pursue these stores - and the response to me was something like ".....we can't make them to come here." However, we can "sell" them on Barnegat. Our demographics would support one of these specialty stores-it would thrive-many of our residents travel miles to go to Trader Joe's way to the south or to the north. DO SOME LEGWORK.

What is going to take Wawa's place now. I knew that Genuardi's was closing but I didn't know that the smaller Wawa was. What is taking Genuardi's place instead?

Too many seniors who don't drive on Highway or leave town for that matter. Town Government better put some effort in getting something in here fast. Hate to call PeaPod for a potato.

At the rate things are going in the area, perhaps
the Ocean County can find a way to lease the site
for a County Seniors Services group, they need
to hire a few more employees to help the struggling
folks in so many areas ...
St. Mary's sold their site to the County ...
surely folks can save the trip to Ocean County Mall
or Stafford locations?

Hey Rick what are YOU on?
this is Barnegat- Manahawkin Patch ...
glad to be of service ...
I have often attended Planning Board
Meetings in Barnegat to speak against
what so many Barnegat residents
prefer to sit on the butts and take all
the development in their town ...
YOU should try it ... if you want to learn
about YOUR town start attending ALL
Planning, Zoning and Council Meetings.
Let your voice be heard.
Arrogance abounds in the tone and
voices of the developers because THEY
know they can get away with things due
to lack of the public voice ...
Hope the new team can get the courage
to appoint Scarinci and Holenbeck law firm
outside Ocean County connection.

And how do you know that I don't already attend Barnegat meetings?

Does anybody have a number to contact to find out what the asking price per sq ft they are trying to get for the space. A top tomato type of store is a great idea but would need to be less expensive then a top tomato. Can't just survive on holidays must be able to shop there weekly.

If there is no incentive for a business to come to Barnegat, they're not going to come, plain and simple. Plus, not to mention, the Genardis location is an aged facility or retail outlet. To put it into simple terms, a potential buyer will need to rehab the interior to fit their needs - more so, because the building WAS previously occupied with a certain floor plan. That is an expense. In addition to the rehab, if the town is not offering any incentives on an aged building, wants top dollar for the building AND a high tax rate - no one is going to touch the place, period.

Most businesses WANT SOMETHING in return at the bargaining table in order for them placing their retail site in X town - in some instances, it will be for a tax break.

If I may ask, exactly what has Barnegat offered any potential buyer of the Genardis complex to lure them in?

It was ridiculous that Barnegat decided to break ground for more retail outlets AND homes, in a RECESSED ECONOMY, where folks are struggling with finances, people losing their jobs and the market for SELLING business or homes was (and in some instances still is) in the gutter. What makes anyone think they can lure a business into an OLD structure when the dang town can't even sell or lease the broken ground with NO buildings in place yet?

Where is the so called business sense of ANYONE in this town?

THERE IS A LOT OF MONEY TO BE MADE IN BARNEGAT FOR THE WALTERS GROUP ("THE LANDLORD") THEY COLLECT THE RENT FROM GENUARDIS FOR THE NEXT 7 YEARS , CAPT?

Rick

9:28 am on Saturday, December 15, 2012

Capt. You call a 20 year old building an old structure?
The town isn't trying to sell Genuardi's. They don't own the building.
And Genuardi's, like the old WaWa, don't pay property taxes. The building owner pays the taxes, whether the building is occupied or not.

It must be something they want everybody to attend. That's why they're holding in in the morning on a weekday. Don't most of the residents of Stafford have to go to work that day?
I would go but I would be taking up a seat that a township resident could use.

you can surely contact the township clerk and or the Walters Group.
I was told they had built the entire complex, it's possible they
still own the strip mall.

There is no Business Planning! We tore down a nature area for a sandlot that sits vacant in a terrible economy. We have 6 red lights from the parkway to Barnegat Blvd that turns Red upon ALL 6 approaches and eliminated All Right on REDs. The county only has control on the county roads The State only has control on the Parkway light and ALL agencies would and can change this upon the request of o Town and/or Police. Complain all you want MANY residents will avoid this nightmare regardless who or what occupies this area! Most state with dual turning right hand lanes allow The INSDE lane to turn on red, so if you think we can't drive with good judgment we did before this debacle. As for the New WAWA. I protest it I will not use it unless I'm coming off the parkway. Besides folks, our Wawa's (Manahawkin and Barnegat) are ripping us off on the gas prices! Lacy is 6 cents cheaper; TR is 15 cents cheaper! $.3.31 currently WAWA Old Bridge $3.07 F Wawa! Support another station and whoever moves into their old location.
STOP complaining let your wallet do the speaking......

And the town has a lot of influence in what the county/state does as far as redlight timing! Rick you're the sucker that buys into this BS. or you're some how connected to this stupidity! I'm just saying IF there's enough voices that say something about this things will change. I wouldn't open ANY business in this town, as things are currently. Suggesting I move tells me it's either one or you're simply a moron. You need to be in the meadow with the rest of the sheep....

In case you didn’t see the results of the recent elections, the local incumbents lost by a large margin in the last election. Apparently enough people did want something to change.
Let’s get them some time and see what happens.

I didn't suggest that you move, I merely noted that you seem to think so many other towns in the area have much better conditions and that you might be happier if you lived in one of them.
After all, it is the Christmas season and I believe everyone should be happy at this time of year.

We could use a really good bakery in this town as there aren't any good bakeries close by. We had to drive to LBI to go to a good bakery. They closed up for the winter and now there is no option. Don't even get me started on the rt 9 bakery. We have to send word to friends and relatives to bring down bread when they come from up north jersey and then freeze the extra. Not even shop rite has good bread.
Genuardis was high priced. But at least we had a super market. We should try for a trader joes to go in there.
