Investigation Continues in Crash That Killed Barnegat Motorcyclist
State police still awaiting results of bloodwork on Freeholder Kelly
State police are still awaiting results of bloodwork taken on Freeholder John P. Kelly after an accident that took the life of a 24-year-old motorcyclist from Barnegat on Friday night, an officer in the Eagleswood barracks said this morning.
"There is nothing new to report at this time," said Sgt. Garlington of the Eagleswood barracks. "We are continuing to investigate. We have not received the results of the blood test yet."
Blood was drawn from Kelly, who consented to the procedure, after the accident, state police have said, which they said is standard procedure in fatal accidents.
The accident killed William D. Kolb of Barnegat, who was thrown from his motorcycle after it collided with the sports utility vehicle driven by Kelly, state police have said.
According to Trooper Joseph Mezzo, Kolb was southbound on Route 9 on his black 2011 Harley Davidson at approximately 6:35 p.m., near mile marker 65.5. Kolb attempted to pass the vehicle in front of him, then collided with the right fender of Kelly's 2005 SUV when he tried to return to the lane of traffic.
Kelly, 61, West Creek, was northbound on Route 9 and was attempting to make a left turn into the West Creek Deli when the collision occurred, Mezzo said.

He is making a left into on coming traffic, what's to investigate? He didn't have the right of way.

it is illegal to pass on the right.
saying that Will was "careless" isn't justified.
i personally feel they are both at fault. i NEVER make a left hand turn until i see the road is 100% clear of any vehicles. there are MANY small cars and motorcycles that you wouldn't be able to see if you had an on coming car making a left (exactly how this accident happened)

Not many details pretty blunt...If kelly was not inbetween the lines of oncoming trafic lane & was in the on coming lane it would be his fault .You are suppose to yield to on coming traffic.. Did the biker pass this vehicle in a legal passing lane & kellys vehicle was in his lane The guy on the motor cycle made a bad judgement call...The family or either party can file a complaint against the other 30 days...

The motorcycle allegedly hit the van in excess of 70MPH, If this is true what was the speed before the M/C slowed down? (I believe the speed on Rt. #9 in that area is either 40 or 45 MPH). One will have to wait for the police reports to be released to see who was at fault. In any event it was a tragedy. Prayers out to the families involved.

Reading this story about the location, I know mile marker 63 coming off the GSP is rte72. And this incident occured at mile marker 65.5 on rte9, wouldn't that be Manahawkin, Stafford Township? Being a MC rider myself, and kinda of knowing the area, there are area's where passing is permitted. The speed limit between Barneget & Manahawkin varies too, 35mph-50mph, and south of rte72, the speed limit is not greater than 45mph until you're past LEH. Riding on a Harley, their distinct Vtwin produces a loud sound which can be heard. And the percentage of motorists not using their turnsignals is very high, and mostly ignored by most PD's. Not to mention talking/texting while operating a vehicle. Why the accident happened can be explained by Kelly. Mr.Kolb cannot, He's Dead.
