Manahawkin Girl Charged; Accused Of Hitting Cars And Then Fleeing

Seventeen-year-old not identified

A 17-year-old Manahawkin girl was caught after she allegedly struck two parked vehicles with her car in Lakehurst and then fled, reports say.

The girl, who was not identified, was charged Wednesday with reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident, police said.

This matter is pending a municipal court appearance.

Lakehurst officers went to A Street in the Pinehurst Estates section of the borough at 8 p.m. Wednesday to invesigate a reported hit-and-run. After some investigation, police learned about a female who fled after her car struck a curb and two parked cars, according to Lakehurst Police Chief Eric S. Higgins.

Upon arrival, officers were advised that a young female with several passengers had been leaving the Pinehurst Park when she struck the curb, the chief said.

Witnesses at the scene were able to provide a description of the vehicle but no license plate number. Officers were eventually able to identify the passengers in the vehicle and, subsequently, the driver of the vehicle. The driver and her parents were contacted and she responded to police headquarters.

"The driver of the vehicle advised that a passenger in the vehicle had
taken her picture and the flash caused her to lose control of the
vehicle causing her to strike the parked vehicles. The driver panicked
and fled the scene," Higgins said.

Sergeants Baranyay and Heinzman, and Officer Gallo investigated.
