77-Year-Old Barnegat Man With Alzheimer's Disease Found In South Brunswick
Barnegat Township police cancel Silver Alert
Barnegat Township reports that the Silver Alert issued earlier today for a missing 77-year-old Barnegat man has been cancelled.
Anthony Granese, 77, of the Mirage development in Barnegat, was located in his car in South Brunswick about an hour ago, according to police scanner reports.
The alert was issued yesterday. Granese had last been seen at Island Beach State Park at 4:30 p.m., when he approached a Berkeley Township police officer looking for directions to the southbound Garden State Parkway.
Granese originally left his Barnegat residence at 1:30 p.m. Saturday to travel to a store in Manahawkin, but was not reported missing to the Barnegat Police Department until 5:30 p.m.
Granese was driving a silver 2003 Toyota Camry, with New Jersey license plate SK782N.

No disrespect intended but Alzhiemer patients are also casually refered to as "Houdinis" by medical professionals and others. My mom is 87 with this horrible disease and before she became bedridden I was amazed by her abilities to accomplish tasks that would easily confuse a healthy person. It is very possible that the keys were hidden or even locked up and he perhaps overheard where they were. Just saying......

You would be surprised. I refused to get my dad's license renewed, and my mother got the help of her neighbor. I saw that he was failing, but often outsiders do not. My dad got lost one day - only one of my highschool friends noticed in Pathmark that my dad was confused. So, my friend brought him back to my parent's home. That was the last day he drove. (He decided on his own to go to a familiar store.) By the way, the neighbor that helped my parents pull this off, told me years later that she was not renewing her own mother's license. Thank God my daughter was there, because I have no idea what I would have said if my daughter wasn't shaking her head, "no" as if to say,"Let it go".

Wouldn't it make sense to publish a photo of the man not a police car or Island Beach State Park sign? Or how about a description of HIM and what he was wearing, not just the car?

C'mon - folks - If you don't like the patch reporting go back to the Asbury Park Press - the Toms River News hasn't changed in a week or so. Perhaps that is more up your alley. The Patch at least gives you pertinent and up to date information for the most part. And they're only as good as the information that is relayed to them by local authorities. If the local authorities were more forthcoming with their details I'm sure you would see them here. Keep up the good work Patch people. I'm sticking with you and I'm sure you'll continue to develop further. At least I know the information is timely and as reliable as can be.

I wonder if "chief wahoo" is the all seeing, all knowing blowhard that they proclaim to be? Or possibly just another cop hater who cannot resist to throw a dig even when nothing wrong has been done. Perhaps if one reads the article they would notice that the officer gave directions to a motorist an hour before they were reported missing. Possibly chief blowhard can lend his crystal ball to the police department so that they will always make the right choice.

I think that some of the "not so nice" people that comment on how bad the Patch is should go away if they don't like it. You don't pay for it, so how can you conmplain. You people are probably the ones that complain about no enough food stamps or unemployment money. It's free! If you want great established writers, go BUY the Wall Street Journal. I am sure that most of the people that write for he Patch do it because they like to, not because they are going to support family vacations every 3 months with their compensation.

For all of those with hypercritical comments about the Patch’s reporting, here is the verbatim alert sent out from the Barnegat Police Department via the Nixle system: “A Silver Alert has been issued for a missing 77 year old Barnegat male who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. Anthony Granese, 77, of the Mirage development in Barnegat was last seen at Island Beach State Park at 4:30pm today (March 31) where he approached a Berkeley Township police officer looking for directions to the southbound Garden State Parkway. Granese originally left his Barnegat residence at 1:30pm to travel to a store in Manahawkin, and was reported missing to the Barnegat Police Department at 5:30pm. Granese is operating a 2003 Toyota Camry, silver in color bearing New Jersey license plate SK783N. Anyone who sees Granese's vehicle is asked to contact 911.”

I was originally not going to respond to the unsubstantiated insult to my writing skills from one of the commenters above, however, seeing some nicer readers out there trying to defend me, I feel compelled to say something, after all. First, Patch writers are hired for being skilled professionals, who have gone through journalism school and usually earned some significant experience after college. This sort of article is not perhaps the best showcase of our talents, but there is nothing wrong with it. In cases like these, we are simply relaying the information we get from the Barnegat Police (thus the picture, by the way, because this alert was issued by the Barnegat PD, and no, they did not have photographs or sketches of the person available, and no, journalists do not create those). If you are wondering what gives me the qualifications to cover Barnegat for Patch, feel free to read more about my background, credentials and experience on the “about us” page. If you feel you could do better, perhaps you should consider writing an article as a freelancer first about something that is going on in town. I would gladly give it a read to see if it is up to our standards. Just make sure that when you showcase your writing talents, you have your grammar straight, and you don’t confuse the use of plural with the use of possessive -- something, incidentally, my daughter is learning now in second grade.

Good comments on your part in a tactful way. A lot of those people commented
on your writing does not know all the facts before they jumped in a conclusion.
Somehow, they may not be as highly educated as you are. Don't be bothered...
