Good Samaritan Struck and Killed While Helping To Push Disabled Car off Garden State Parkway
Accident happened at mile marker 74.7 northbound, State Police say
A man who was trying to help push a disabled car off the northbound lane of the Garden State Parkway in Lacey Township died when a passing car struck and killed him early this evening, State Police said.
Preliminary reports indicate the man was one of four who stopped to push the disabled car onto the shoulder of the roadway, Sgt. Adam Grossman said.
"The person at the rear left of the vehicle was struck by a passing motor vehicle," he said. "Unfortunately it looks like a Good Samaritan...they are still trying to sort things out."
The man - whose identify is being withheld for now - was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune by the Lacey Township First Aid Squad.
"He was pronounced dead at the hospital," Grossman said.
The accident occurred at 5:46 p.m. at mile marker 74.7. More information will be released tomorrow, he said.

Anyone on foot on the GSP is certainly taking a HUGE risk. Very very sad.

We passed through and saw some of the accidents. The assholes were blasting past us in the snow and rain just south of the accident sites. Slow down in bad weather! A trooper passed us on the left to go to an accident site and we saw a car down an embankment on the right. It took 911 almost a minute to answer the call.

Too many accidents ,everyone ignores speed limits on the parkway and the" weavers" who cut everyone off to get one car ahead of the next guy. What happened to courtesy on the road ? If your car breaks down get out of it and get away from it quick ! Average speed on the parkway is 80 ,why is everyone going so fast?

Nobody is talking SMACK.
We all agree how sad and horrible of tragedy this is.
But I think we all need to also be aware of just how dangerous it is to be on the GSP on foot. And just how people who dont drive cautiously or too fast make it even more dangerous.
Just trying to help keep another from possibly getting killed.
No smack. Just lots of caution.

They need to start enforcing 'move over laws' in NJ....ever drive in pa? It's amazing how drivers get out of the right lane for police officers making stops, emergency and disabled vehicles ....or maybe pa drivers are more courteous.

Don't get me started on PA an NY drivers who do not understand how to use the left lane unless their goal is to block traffic flow. In any case, never get out of your car on the parkway, it's way too dangerous and the speeds are frightening now.

rip to the person trying to help.....
the parkway is a death trap just driving, let alone trying to be on foot on it.....
as other post s said,
get out of vehicle, stay on other side of guard rail, or far off the shoulder and call for help... more likely than not , the car will get hit by a driver not paying attention.

For a more full account, see the Asbury Park Press (or Lacey Beacon). The killer/driver was unlicensed, under the influence, in possession of drugs/paraphernalia, and travelling too fast. He was arrested and faces serious charges.
