Oyster Creek Generator Offline for Refueling Maintenance

Planned exercise began at midnight

The power generator at Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station is currently offline as employees perform a planned refueling outage.

Oyster Creek spokeswoman Suzanne D'Ambrosio said the generator was removed from service at midnight in order to complete maintenance and replace nearly one-third of the reactor's fuel.

“During the outage, we'll work as a team to refuel, maintain and upgrade our facility for continued safe and efficient operations through 2019,” said site Vice President Mike Massaro. “Our skilled and highly trained supplemental workers share our commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.”

The testing, maintenance and modifications being conducted can only be performed when Oyster Creek is not generating electricity, D'Ambrosio said in a release.

Oyster Creek is employing more than 1,000 additional workers to complete the maintenance.
