The VFW Post 10092 and American Legion Post 232 held a remembrance service on Sunday in downtown Barnegat in honor of American soldiers who have given their lives for their country.

More than 100 local residents turned out for the solemn event.

"The empty seat at the dinner table, the smaller gatherings is a constant reminder of their loss," said American Legion Post 232 Commander Jim Brown.

"When we speak about our country and all the great things it represents, one characteristic stands out, the men and women that serve in our Armed Forces," said Barnegat Mayor Alfonso Cirulli at the ceremony. "They are the very backbone that almighty God used to establish this nation not only to keep us free, but the rest of the world free."

In a ceremony called The Toning of the Bell VFW post 10092 remembered those they have lost since just last May.

"Our ranks are thinning out," said VFW Commander John Rivers.

"It's our duty to teach our youth that nothing comes without a price," Rivers said in a speech written by National Commander Richard L. DeNoyer and delivered by all the post commanders through out the country. "Sacrifice is meaningless without remembrance."

Memorial Day celebration will continue in Barnegat today with a parade along Bay Avenue, which will start at 9 a.m. and will end at the American Legion Post building on Route 9 with another special ceremony, followed by hot dogs, beer and music. The event is free and open to the public, according to Andy Pignatelli, post member and parade chairman.

"Everyone is welcome," Pignatelli said. "This is something we give back to the township every year, and it's a way for us to bring attention to memorial day."
