Pit Bull Leads Good Samaritan To Stricken Owner In Double Trouble State Park

Beachwood woman airlifted to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston

BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Frank Delarosa thought it was strange to see a pit bull running down a sugar sand path near the cranberry bogs at Double Trouble State Park on Friday, her leash dragging behind her.

Delarosa coaxed the one-year-old pit bull mix over to him, picked her up and started to head up the path to the park office.

But "Lilly"was restless. Delarosa decided to put her down. She began pulling and tugging him down the path, back towards the cranberry bogs.

It was there he found Lilly's owner unconscious about 150 yards down on the path. Dona Timoney, 51, of Beachwood, had suffered some kind of "medical event" while on a walk with her dog, Berkeley Township Detective Sgt. James J. Smith said.

"She was unconscious, but breathing," he said.

Detective Will Cullen and Patrolman Jon Sperber responded to the scene. Timoney was first taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River by members of the Bayville First Aid Squad and MONOC paramedics. She was later airlifted to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, Cullen said.

Her condition is unavailable at this time, Smith said.

Lilly is now with Timoney's daughter. Timoney had previously rescued the dog from a "drug house" in North Carolina, Cullen said.

"The back of her car was filled with treats and bones," Cullen said. "She's obviously an avid animal lover."

Its not only pittbull, anyother dog would have done the same thing. assuming the owner have created a good loving bond with the dog. The bond becomes like an understanding of sort to take action when unusual thing happens. Its a disgrace when people abuse, neglect or hurt these animals. given a chance they will always be ready to save a life, not only their owners. any ones life.

My little dog was attacked in my yard by a pitbull, It clamped on the side of his neck
and shook him like a rag doll. I poured water on them hit it with pots and pans and bashed its head with a rock. It finally let go and went home when I ordered it to thankfully. These two dogs had been walked together several times by the pit's owner and my nine year old daughter. I rushed my dog to the vet and he survived. Near a town 40 miles from us an 11 year old boy rode by a house on a county gravel road when 2 pitbulls ran out and killed him.

I have dogs but the bottom line is any dog would bite in the right situation. Pitbulls are dangerous because they are too family oriented and loving. Their bite is the most dangerous because their jaws lock and it takes time to disengage.

Here's a scenario...you have a young son and one of his friends come over and they tussel like kids do and your son ends up on the ground crying. Are you sure you know how your dog would respond? You had better. Most of the bad raps pits get is not from hurting their owner.

My neighbors Standard Poodle killed my Yorkie right in my back yard. He took her home and my neighbor kept her in the freezer for 9 days then put her back in my yard. The prints in the snow led to her house. They lied about it and when we found our dog had an autopsy done on her. It was confirmed. They sold their home and moved after several other small dogs were missing. They still have the dog.

Many comments reflect the statement that while "some" pit bulls may be "vicious" others are "sweet". What must be remembered by pit bull owners is that many of the deadly attacks are made by pit bulls that before the attack and after behaved for years in a non-violent manner. All pit bull owners should be aware that years of flawless "sweet" behavior is insufficient evidence to conclude that a pit bull will not kill. They do. Regularly. Sweet ones with no vicious history. Therefore it is very important that anyone not capable of defending themselves physically should not be left alone with one even if you have had years of regular observation of the pit doing nothing while a small child for example "lays all over it". Most of the time nothing will happen but just check the news. Deaths occur regularly. They are pits that cause them. Sweet ones.

Why? Simple. They are bred to fight to the death and when that instinct is triggered it happens. In my opinion you should have to have a license to own a pit that requires that you view and understand the objective record. You should know your responsibilities to protect others from your pit. And if you fail at them you should be convicted of manslaughter.

Pit bulls. Sweet ones. Are dangerous animals. That does not mean that they are bad. They are not. They are sweet. Really. Sweet and potentially deadly. Know that.

Great story.
Tired of hearing so many communities demanding or limiting no pit bulls etc.
Pit bulls like any breed can do a lot of damage if not properly trained and respected.
When any dog has had proper and THOROUGH training, including the person on the other end of the leash and is respected, loved, they will generally not be as aggressive as without training.
Having said that at no time should any child be left alone with any big or medium sized dog without proper supervision the dog may look at the child as an encroachment on their "turf" and lack of affection from their owners.
The dog may also see the child as a "toy".
So please treat all dogs big to small with proper respect and space and ensure you spay/neuter your pets it add years to their lives.

What was the common thread owners/gangs etc. who decided that this was the breed to use for their activities. Now that pits are the breed of the moment any story with a pit gets attention. Any breed can be trained to be vicious as any breed treated with love and with control will return that love. If you don't believe it when was the last time we had a big story about a Dobermen compared to 20-30 yrs ago.

Dogs are the most loyal companions and they give back more than they get. Ranger is gentle, though imposing. He loves kids and will let you feed him or touch his food while he eats. AMEN and AMEN on how loyal, smart and loving Pit Bulls or mix can be.....if you're sitting dow,n they will come over and put their head on your foot and go to sleep....they do not deserve the bad press they get....like children, dogs are a close reflection of their owner and how they are treated.....obviously some dogs are more aggressive or protective, and in those cases, owners need to use restraint and not throw caution to the wind by letting the pet run amuck with other people or pets....that's when accidents happen !!!!

I have a pit bull, Angel, who lives up to her name. She is the most loving and sweet dog I have ever had. She was also taken from a drug house. Dogs are amazing. I have been working with dogs for years. Hate to be the one to say it but this dog has about as much pit in it as it does poodle. No doubt it has cattle dog in in and maybe a dab of pit or dobie. Neither pit or dobies have errect ears naturally. The muzzle and jaw is way to long and narrow for a pit. Mutts are the most loyal breed and cattle dogs are way smart. The boarder collie is the known to be the smartest. We as humans have basicly ruined the American Staffordshire (pit bull) breed. All dogs have a job from guarding to companionship and that job is breed into them. With that said when someone breeds a dog for fighting the more unstable they can make the dog, inbreeding, breeding with other unstable dogs the out come is heartbreaking. The dog maybe seem fine for the first year or so then it can snap. I have wittessed this more than a few times In my state as in many others you are unable to get homeowners insureance or find rentals owning a pit. The shelters put them down right away and the rescuses are full to the brim and can't accept anymore. Yet there are those who still feel the need to breed them. Not to better the breed, meaning showing them and building a good line, because they think they are so cute and cool. I say this out of love for the dogs and out of experince. I put down mine after two years for being vicious had her since she was 3 months old never played ruff with her, never raised a hand to her in anger.

Pitbull's jaws DO NOT LOCK! Educate yourself. The 'pit bull' has powerful jaws, but they are not alone in this. This is yet another myth - that 'pit bulls' are more dangerous because they have the most powerful bite. Most large breeds and cross breeds have a very strong bite, and even smaller dogs can inflict a bite powerful enough to kill. Any dogs can be dangerous in the hands or an irresponsible, negligent or abusive owner. --- Dr. Lehr Brisbin of the University of Georgia

@Dan Charney, well said!!!!! Why on earth "responsible" dog owners insist on continuing to add to the animal population when there are THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS of animals put to sleep every year simply because there aren't enough homes for the ones that are already here is beyond me?!?!? While I have imense respect for those breeders who ARE responsible & treat their animals with love & compassion, in my opinion, there is just NOT ONE GOOD REASON to bring more dogs into this world when there are SO MANY out there being PUT TO DEATH because there aren't enough homes to place these existing animals into. The dogs that are at your local shelter are THE EXACT SAME DOGS that some fool paid hundreds if not thousands of dollars for from a breeder or (gasp) pet store a few months ago. I wish more people would consider ADOPTING before adding to the ever increasing doggy death toll- no matter the breed.

This is great to finally read a good story about Pit Bulls. There are so many outstanding qualities of this breed that become overlooked by the few incidents when negligent owners have raised them to behave in a negligent manner. This story finally highlights the loyalty that the breed posesses for its owner. If raised with love and obedience a Pit Bull will deliver years of laughs, love and loyalty.

To people still making bad comments about pit bulls. Just so you know HUMANS kill also, even those sweet precious children we give life to kill. A dog is what you make of it. A dog is not a human, a dog is controlled and raised by a human and if you have kids or even adults that torment any breed dog, even cats they will bite. Maybe next time you think it is so precious when your little angel children hit the dog on the head or try to climb on the dog or any other type of abuse children put animals through you may want to put a stop to it, instead of thinking it is so adorable or do not wonder why when the animal turns on your infant or toddler. Trust me we had a cat that turned on me and bit me good in my earlobe, thats when I learned to leave the cat alone. And my mom did not kill or have the cat killed because he bit me, once I learned to leave him alone that was it, however I was told I keep pesting him he is gone, and guarantee I would have been the most heartbroken if she got rid of him.

They have been so vilified, that alot of people when they see one, they immediately have the wrong impression. I can take Molly for walks, and it always the little dogs that start pulling at their leases and going crazy trying to get to her, honestly it is never her trying to get to one of them. Even if pits were no different psychologically from, let's say, a Westie an average person could drop kick the Westie if it bit them. Try drop kicking a pit and you'll find yourself part of the fence. Be realistic. Pits have some switch that makes them go from sweet to insane for innocuous reasons.

99.9% of pit bull type dogs are sweet, loyal and will never hurt anyone. The reason the breed (really a type) get a "bad rap" is that the few that do bite often cause tremendous damage. This was once a breed trait - the tenacity to keep fighting "to the death". Even family pets with no history of aggression will (rarely) trigger unto this drive. Any breed can be triggered into biting, but most breeds let go quickly. Unfortunately many "pit types" are only a few generations from fighting stock and there is a slight chance they can trigger into this drive and do substantial damage. Its not always the owner and it is not always the dog, but a combination of the two. All dogs should be handled responsibly and well socialized.

K9sue, one thing we learned when we had our dog, because she was a barker and a growler, is when people show fear around a dog the aggression comes out too. Our dog was a miniature collie mixed with spitz. She was more aggressive to males than females, the vet said it was all fear, where there the dog feared men more than women.

And if you ran from her she went after you and nipped at your feet, but I was also a big cause of her aggression too, learned to leave the cat alone then we got the dog, then same thing, did not listen to my mom and pested the dog. She never bit anyone or never bit me, but I have learned one thing, if your kids do not leave animals alone it is best not to place one with them because unfortunatly the animal is the only one that will pay when it finally turns on someone.

Agreed Gali and and it usually are the parents or other children themselves that kill more children than anyone. They are either driven to suicide by bullying, or killed by their parents or shot by other kids in school. Or they kill themselves when driving because they decide to drive recklessly.

It's all about how they are raised. Much like humans. The breed just gets a bad rap because they are strong and hunky which attracts humans that want to exploit those physical characteristics. When they are raised by lovely kind people like this woman then they are sweet and heroic dogs. Don't buy into the breed hype about pit bulls!

I'm sorry. Nobody loves dogs more than I do but you're ignoring the facts. Pit bulls are loving and loyal until they snap. They are listed as the most dangerous dog breed for a reason. I studied pit bulls for 2 years and there is no denying that even the sweetest ones will suddenly attack for no obvious reason. If you do a google alert for pit bulls you'll read every day about how a child or old person or other animal is maimed or killed by pit bulls in the country and the first thing out of the owner's mouths is that they're surprised because the dog has always been so sweet. Never hurt anything. It's the same every time. Pit bulls do not have to appear mean or abused or dangerous. Something triggers something in them that makes them suddenly go after someone or someone else's pet. It's very unpredictable.

I had a neighbor..a little old man..who was on his front porch with his 10 lb little dog who was his whole life. A car on the street was stopped at a red light and a pit bull jumped out of the wondow, ran up to the dog on the porch and killed it..right in front of the owner who loved him. The very nice lady who owned the pit bull was devestated and her first words were: "I don't know why he did that. He's so sweet and never hurt anything in his life." I have a friend, and actress, who raised a pit bull from a puppy. Six years later while playing with him on her bed with a toy, he suddenly lunged at her face and ripped it open. She now has a scar from her forehead to her chin from it. She said he's been the friendliest dog she's ever had. Good with all her children and grandchildren. You can find these stories every day in the news around the country. It's sad when there are so many wonderful breeds with constant good temperaments, why have a pit bull that you have to worry about? All you have to do is read.

so many other good breeds huh? and which ones would that be? dachshunds, cocker spaniels, labs, etc.? for your information, dachshunds and chihuahuas are the most aggressive dogs and not pits. pits scored almost as the highest in temperament tests. higher than labs. just a few weeks ago a lab killed a baby and tore the baby's leg off. The other week a jack russell killed a baby in his crib. So dont come wth that nonsense that you just have to read this and that. maybe you should start reading news about other breeds killing kids etc.

I expected all the pit lover's responses. It does not change the facts. It's not a media issue or about other dog bites or about how they were raised. Most attacks come from dogs that were raised in loving households with children. It is a fact that pit bulls cause the most damaging bites of any breed. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS READ. I love dogs and do a lot for their wellbeing and rescue. Have done it my whole life and for all breeds. If you want to simply ignore the facts about pit bulls then do so. Comparing pit bulls to golden retrievers is just ridiculous. Please...just do a little research.

It is stupid people that cause dog bites a Pit is no more likely to "snap" than a pug or a beagle is educate yourself you sound like a shill for PETA!!

Lindsay Smith, I don't think you researched your facts correctly or you were reading into official websites. My neighbor has a lab and he ripped apart and killed another neighbor's poodle as he was being walked on a leash. The cops were called and the dog was not taken in...just the owner was fined for having his dog off a leash. If that were my Staffordshire Terrior they would have shot her on the spot. All dogs have aggression (some pits if not socialized at a young age have DOG aggression).
All dogs attack. The only media coverage is when a bully breed does it, or a dog that resembles one. Pits get their bad rap because of the hype that humans cause. I don't think you are stupid, just misinformed and ignorant. I think you should open your eyes and make sure your research is coming from actual research and not biased articles. :)

There seems to be way too many "under-endowed" guys who think owning a big vicious dog breed will make their sorry butt look masculine. I'm not a pit bull advocate, I'm a REAL animal lover. Get your effing facts straight you bimbo. Pits aren't even in the top 10 of bite dogs, the media just jumps all over it when it DOES happen. Also, what have you to say about the pit bull (who was adopted as an ADULT, so nothing about upbringing involved here) who pulled her elderly owner off the railroad tracks after she fell and the dog had to have a leg amputated for her good deed. Keep spewing your ignorance with the rest of the uneducated people out there. You are no animal lover, you're one of the may pit haters, just admit it.

One other thing Lindsay, with all your "studying" of pits, please explain to me how it was possible that 49 of the 51 pit bulls who were bred and trained to fight in Michael Vick's possession were able to be rehabbed and rehomed in homes with other dogs and children. You really don't have a clue, so keep your pie hole shut.

I find it quite interesting how aggressive and insulting the responses to Lindsay are seem to be. I am not an anti-breed person, for any breed. I work in dog rehab professionally and for shelters. Whether you want to accept it or not, pit type dogs do have a higher rate of serious bites than any other breed. 99% will never hurt anyone, but ALL dogs can bite. When you have a breed with a genetic predisposition to trigger into fight combined with an irresponsible dog owner you have a potential tragedy. With fighting breeds (more than just the "pits") you have to be extra observant. Some dogs do have that “trigger”, many do not.

People who defend any dog as harmless are setting themselves up for an accident. The vast majority of dog bites are from people who claim "my dog would never bite" amd "he never showed any sign of aggression before".All dogs can change "mood" in an imstant. Even a friemdly dog can react out of character in the "wrong" situation. This is not a "breed" thing, it is general canine behavior.

Lindsey, please explain the great dane that just mauled a child recently too, while owner was trying to secure the dog in the basement. Meanwhile the dog attacked someone a week earlier. Plus the dog owner had her own child. And the dog attacked a child, if you study breeds like you say, does that tell you anything? And just to clarify, I am not just a pitt lover, I love all animals more than most humans, just sad to see these pitts treated like wild animals all the time, police meet up with these dogs right away it is get the gun and shoot, no matter how affectionate the dog is. You do not see other dogs getting shot because of it's breed just pitt bulls, that i why more people defend the pitt bulls.

Kristin Key

1:48 pm on Monday, June 4, 2012

@ K9sue Pits don't go have a genetic predisposition to trigger into fight when it comes to humans. They have that with other dogs and you will find a lot of adult Pits are dog aggressive. However dog aggression IS NOT the same as human aggression. You want a Pit that will attack people just put it on a chain in the back yard and forget about it. Pits have to be socialized and it doesn't stop because the dog becomes an adult. With well socialized and well trained Pits you have one of the most amazing breeds in the world. Pits don't have logging jaws. They are terriers though and the way they treat "prey" or something they bite down on is no different from that of a J.R. or Fox terrier. The reason the damages is so much greater with a Pit is the difference in size.

I have 5 Pits in my home of various ages. One of them is a senior. None of them have ever bit anyone or ever attempted to bite anyone. They also live in a house with 7 small terrier mixes and a couple of Chihuahuas. They have never even attempted to hurt any of them. In fact they have saved a couple of them on more than one occasion.

A dog is what you make regardless of breed.

Lindsay Smith this is for you! You claim you studied pit bulls for two years. From what I can tell from you've written you haven't the slightest clue. First of all dogs are social animals that exist in groups that are based on dominance that is why even dogs like labs have been known to attack smaller dogs and killing them as well as other breeds

Lindsay Smith this is for you! Did you know that a chow chow is more dangerous to leave around children that a pit bull. The pit bull is no more vicious that any other breed. What make them better suited for what they were bred for is a quality known as "gameness"( breed does what ever it was trained to do to the extreme. it does not quit ) so when some idiot who does not truly understand everything about the breed gets their hands on one that,s the same as letting a child play with a gun. I've bred them, raised them studied them and read everything there was to read about the breed and their history. I have what you seem to lack which is understanding, about the breed and dogs in general. pit bulls don't just " snap". No more that any other breed. Anyone who chooses to own a pit bull has to first make sure the dog they get comes from a reputable breeder to ensure the animal was not the product of inbreeding. Second the breed is like any other breed it is part of a pack (social group) or family and it will either be dominate over all others around it dog or human or submissive depending on how well the owner makes his or her dominance known to the animal. This is true with a springer spaniel, chihuahua, lab. pit bull or any other breed. ( take into consideration the phrase " biting the hand that feeds it ") A pit bull ( more properly known as a American staffordshire terrier) needs to have the time and knowledge to properly train the animal any breed. if you can't don't get

This is for Angie. You are wrong Petey was an American staffordshire terrier. Part of some of the first strains bred in the united states. " American bull dog was one of the generic names given to the breed just like pit bull, pit dog, and pit fighter. The dog was given these generic names at that time according to what there job was ( Ex. a corgi was known as a herding dog, a doberman pincher was known as a guard dog) or they were known for the origin of of the original breed. The actual breed a pit bull originated from is a staffordshire bull terrier which was bred from crossing an English bull dog with a English bull terrier and adding in a manchester terrier. they did not get the results they wanted in a fighting so when they brought the breed to the U.S breeders here included their own additions to get the results they wanted, Hence the American staffordshire terrier more commonly known as the pit bull. This took place in the early 1900s'. Petey was the result of the combined strains of "King cotton and Diboe "

Many breeds have at some time or another been involved with a mauling or worse. Pit bulls get a bad rap because bad humans abuse and teach them to be mean. It is called survival and some of these dogs are so damaged from being mistreated, it is a criminal act.The owners ought to be put in jail. If you can hurt an animal, you are capable of doing the same thing to a human There is a wonderful book about Michael Vicks dogs. Some of them were damaged beyond help but a lot of his dogs were rehabilitated and many were placed in loving homes and are loving family dogs.. yes, these dogs are wonderful. How many people do they maul and either kill or maim each year? While it may not be the dogs fault because itis in their dna to not stop fighting until all signs of resistance cease, they are, nonetheless, unreasonably dangerous. They are wonderful pets............UNTIL SOMETHING SETS THEM OFF. retrievers retrieve, pointers point, and pitbulls fight to the death because thats what they've been bred to do. The dogs are not evil. They don't know any better. But only a moron would have a pitbull in a populated area. That applies exponentially to anyone who would have more than one. Ever hear of a child ripped to shreds by 3 Golden Retrievers?

Wow, your ignorance is astounding. "But only a moron would have a pitbull in populated area"
Really? I have a full blooded pit, I rescued and a pit/german shepherd mix I rescued and I live in a city. They walk with me thru the streets, jog with me thru town, and play in my back yard. Anything can set any dog off. All dogs require proper training and obedience. It's morons like you that continue to spread their bad reputation like an infectious disease. Early training and socialization make this breed one of the best to own. They are one of the smartest, most loyal and trainable dogs you can own. Now are we going to doom them all with discriminating comments such as yours, because some cases have proven different ? Of course not ! As far as kids... kids of all ages need to be taught how to behave when any dog is nearby - specially dogs with a strong prey drive. Does that make those dogs killing machines ? Of course not ! If the owner is smart and responsible and educated - he will know what to do and prevent any incident. Do we allow a kid with a moped license to drive a Mack truck ? I think not. Same with dog owners. It is time the narrow-minded and archaic way of thinking and sensationalizing is replaced with educated and productive measures. Time to toughen up dangerous dog laws and punish those who fail to be responsible. Time to stop killing and banning innocents who become victims of brainwash.
You must have never been touched by a dog's love, specially an APBT. That is too bad. I have. And that is what opened my eyes to how unjust they have been labeled and in regards to this and the media's huge role in convincing people like you to buy into that hype, go here : http://blogs.denverpost.com/fetch/2010/07/18/the-media-takes-its-lumps-over-reporting-about-pit-bulls/1387/

Actually, I do know of a baby that was killed by a Golden Retriever. I also know a vet tech whose nose was ripped off by a Yorkie.

My caution on Pit Bulls is the Pit Mixes.... you can get very unstable personalities when breeds are mixed. For example, a Pit mixed with a guarding breed is not good... guarding breeds are usually 1 person dogs.... that's trouble in a pit mix.

On the other hand, the AmStaff people are working to create a breed that has the Pit Bull look and good qualities, but w/o the gameness or the dog and small animal aggression. While the APBT people are trying to keep the gameness, but focus the breed on using that "gameness" for events such as weight pulling.

As it once was, in its fighting days, the Pit Bull was the most human friendly of all dog breeds. Dogs that were not, were put down. It was a part of the fighting ritual for the owner of the opposing dog to bathe the challenger's dog before a match to make sure all was on the up and up. Fights were often stopped when a dog was injured to allow for treatment. A game loser was often more valued than the winner. Most fights were not to the death. So the ability of owner and stranger to handle a pit dog was of the utmost importance. When not fighting the dogs were family pets.

It was not until these dogs breeding was warped by punks and allowed to breed freely on the streets that these human attacks became an issue.

No moron, you don't hear about Golden Retrievers injuring kids because they are not the flavor of the times by the news media. But the CDC has and they track stastics on dog injuries and attacks and Golden Retrievers have more attacks than pit bulls. My pit bull was attacked by a Golden Retriever who was being walked off leash. But Golden Retrievers attacking other dogs or humans doesn't sell newspapers or make an interesting story for the talking heads on TV, so too bad for the pit bulls. Your analysis of the pit bulls fighting to the death is so unbelievabily stupid it nearly made me sick. You have no idea what you are talking about, so you should go and watch TV, or do else to drain the remaining brain cells you have left in your head.

Indianapolis/Marion County had been considering certain aspects of BSL, but after examining the facts, dropped the idea. In June 2008, the Netherlands lifted its long-standing breed ban because there had been no decrease in the number of biting incidents during the 15-year ban period. The laws were changed to emphasize owner responsibility, local leash law enforcement and on educational programs. They also have a system for expert testing of any dogs that may have shown aggressive tendencies.
Recently, Italy revoked its 20-year breed ban citing the ban had failed and had “no scientific foundation”. Instead they have replaced it with a law making owners more responsible for their pet's training and behavior. The new law is built on the foundation that any dog, regardless of breed, can potentially be dangerous and it puts the responsibility—morally and legally—on the owners for a dog’s behavior. The law also makes veterinarians responsible for compiling a register of individual dogs who they believe may be potentially high risk, requiring owners to keep those pets muzzled in public.
The UK, which has had a breed ban since 1991, is revoking it and replacing it with laws that hold an owner responsible. This is because the breed ban has been an abysmal failure and the rate of dog bites/attacks has skyrocketed, as has cases of dog cruelty, abuse, fighting, etc.

sounds to me like you watched fox news one too many times. open your browser and start googling: jack russel killed baby, husky killed baby, lab killed baby and ripped the leg off. and that just happened in the last two months. so i would guess all of those breeds are horrible too and i expect from an "expert" like you to start telling this around NOT to own any of hose breeds because it obviously must be in their dna too. How many pits do you think exist? too many for you to count. and lets say less than 10 ppl get hurt a year by them. so i would guess the percentage of dangerous dogs (not to mention those idiot people that left their baby with the dog in a room and left, because i dont really blame those dogs) must be around 0.000000001%. so i guess the rest are all evil too though they never showed any signs???? And um yeah google lab killing baby and ripping its leg off. Go and get some real facts and not just some crap you heard from some idiot

"They are wonderful pets............UNTIL SOMETHING SETS THEM OFF."

That could be said about any dog. Every dog, like every person, has a breaking point. And saying it's in their DNA is just looking for any excuse to blame the dog. Did you know that Boston Terriers were originally bred as fighting dogs? So you better look out for them since it's in their DNA, too. As well as Bulldogs, Boxers, Mastiffs and numerous other breeds. So do you see how stupid that is? Probably not. But my Boston, as well as EVERY pit bull I've ever met, would sooner lick you to death than bite. How many people have been killed by a pit bull? Seriously? Zero. People kill them way more often because of people like you.

"Ever hear of a child ripped to shreds by 3 Golden Retrievers?"

As Goldens are susceptible to seizures that cause rage, I'm sure it happens. Why don't we hear about it? Because Golden Retrievers aren't newsworthy, unfortunately. And if they do make a bad news story, they're labeled a pit bull to make it so.

"But only a moron would have a pitbull in a populated area."

Pit bulls love people and not for a meal so the more people around them, the better. If you treat ANY dog badly, it'll turn out badly. Dogs don't get in a ring and decide "I'm supposed to fight!" Humans teach them. So only a moron would take anything you've said as fact.

It's quite obvious, that you don't do any research before you make statements about "Pit Bulls". I am a retired Veterinarian, former Great Dane breeder, had numerous "Pit Bulls", and have been a dog trainer. This story doesn't surprize me. The "Pit Bull" breed is highly intelligent and loyal. They also are great family dogs. Like all breeds and mixed breeds, all dogs must be trained, responsibly, and must be socialized with other dogs, as well as different specieses (cats, birds, Ferrets, and all others) and of course humans. Now, what is factual is that this breed DOES have the strongest bite force (pressure) of any breed. But fighting is NOT in any DNA of any species. Animals bite for three basic reasons; 1st out of fear (protecting themselves, thier property or thier acquired family, i.e. owners). 2nd is simply agression ( being taught ). The only animal that may kill, just to kill, is a domestic cat. And the 3rd reason; if they are affected, i.e. distemper or rabies.......You need to check the facts. You put fear in peoples heads based on your beliefs, and that's what gives a undesirable overview of different breeds.

The dog was not bred to fight to the death it was bred to not quit until it told to. Did you know the original pit fights used what was known as the scratch line rule. look it up and read for yourself how it worked.pit bulls have been used to hunt small game , bear, and even wild bore and have been successful being under control of the owners voice commands

The girl was 10 had known the dog for 3 years and she wasn't down in his face. Actually if you look at the statistics Dalmatians and Golden Retrievers are in the top 10 for biting.

For those who think the pit bull is god tell your stories of how great this breed is to a lady in my town who has a son with a crushed ankle caused by an attack by two pit bulls that had never harmed anyone before. I think she will not agree. If your pittie has been gentle and sweet for ten years just remember that tomorrow it may kill. Any breed can snap on occasion but when a pit bull does it has the capability to do what it was bred to do and that is to kill and while the original intent was to breed it to kill other dogs in a pit sometimes this extends beyond dogs. Before you call me a moron at least come up with an original insult instead of that worn out one used mainly by imbeciles.

It is the pits owner who can be stupid, dont the dog. I love my pit. My pit even calls dogs to come into his fence, and when i get home they are playing together. he loves his backyard, he has been neutered, and he loves people, and most dogs. they are like people, they have personalitys, and some dogs dont mesh together. read them, and keep them safe on leashes,

Like I said I was a child that did not really abuse animals however my pestering of the animals as a small child could have ticked any animal off, including my cat. My grandmother's neighbor also had a dog that kids would walk past and throw stuff at the dog, till it finally broke off it's chain and went after them. Pretty pathetic someone , a child, threw a firecracker at the dog, luckily the dog did not pick it up. Guarantee after that my grandmothers dog never went out in the fenced yard without her.

Tamarya, You made my point. Some made the comment that pit bulls kill more dogs that any other dog. My reply was because they have the built to accomplish that at higher percentage than most other dogs. The Poodle, German Shepard comparison was to make the point that a poodle does not have the size nor the strength to kill a German Shepard.

You're an idiot, proof that we live in an absurd society where you need a license to own a dog, but any fool can have a child! I breed Jack Russell Terriers, not one of the boys I own weighs 10 pounds and I've never left them alone with my child because they are ANIMALS! Last week my wife accidentally dropped a cookie between them, they fought and while the two of us were breaking it up, my wife got her hand ripped open..off to the hospital for mattress stitches. Now, imagine your child with a cookie, 2 Pit Bulls, same scenario with the ability to remove a limb or your child's jugular. I had to hit my 10 lb Jack with a right cross that would have dropped a full grown man to make him release and Jacks don't have the lockjaw mechanism a Pit Bull does. Seek therapy .

John, you are obviously set in your ways ... quit trolling and find something better to do. Wyatt, I own a pit and 2 Pit bull/ Jack Russell mixes, and honestly I laugh at the idea of my dogs attacking each other or my niece or nephew over a cookie! My pit is spayed and boys aren't neutered, all three eat out of the same plate at the same time, HAPPILY I might add. When my niece and nephew do have food around my dogs, the only fear they have is of getting drooled on. The truth of the matter is my two male dogs are not aggressive dogs and neither is my pit. Grendel (whom I should have named Cringer) is loved by our cats, hides in the bath tub when it rains and is scared of everything right down to the printer making noise and his own shadow. Beast (whom I should have named Goofy) is to busy trying to play or demanding affection to care that Grendel is getting close to a cookie he left on the floor. Gizmo (my pit) will sit and beg as she is trained to do, if she doesn't get a reward she tries again. I wouldn't hesitate leaving my niece and nephew alone with my dogs and neither would my sister (their mom). I know my dogs, they were raised with love not violence and they DO NOT show aggressive behavior.

Furthermore, Pit bulls don't have that lockjaw mechanism you mentioned either and instead of PUNCHING YOUR LESS THAN TEN POUND DOG, consider getting them neutered or try throwing a bowl of cold water on them, less expensive than a vet appointment or an animal cruelty charge.

For all the commenters about what great dogs Pit Bulls are and what a bad rap they get...... PLEASE! PLEASE! Spread the word to SOCIALIZE! SOCIALIZE! SOCIALIZE! Pit Bulls with other dogs, cats, etc.

Because pit fighting was a ritualized sport, like boxing, Pits were bred to be human friendly... any pit dog that was not was killed on the spot. A pit dog had to be handled by the opposing dog's owner to assure a fair fight... and they had to be easily treated for their own injuries.

HOWEVER, NEVER EVER forget that Pits were bred to fight other dogs. When they get that focused stare at another dog, WALK the DOG AWAY! This is genetic. ALL Terriers were bred to kill vermin... the playful head shaking is play killing of a smaller animal.... Add that the fact that Pits were bred to NOT give up. That "gameness" the never give up attitude was what was most prized in Pit dogs.... So if you have a Pit Bull that has small animal aggression and it does something... It won't just quit.

Even if your dog is socialized with other dogs.... be careful.... you are dealing with genetics... Pit mixes toss in other breeds' personality traits that can make for other issues. It's not just how they were raised.... tho' that is Extremely important.

BTW.... I have a lot of pit experience. Best dogs I've ever had have been pits. Love 'em! But never underestimate what you have.... because they are strong and the most tenacious of all breeds.

Oh look, a sane person! Socialising dogs is extremely important! Duh, it's a pack animal. Cats is not so important (cats shouldn't be outside anyway), and some cats just do not like other cats, but still, it's important to socialise any pet - just like children.

Pitbulls aren't bad dogs! There's no such thing as a "bad" breed. They are, however, bred to murder things. Like, for example...bears. Yeah. I think they are sweet animals, but are very protective and their protectiveness gets them into trouble.

At the risk of sounding like a bad, aggressive human, if anyone ever tried to take my pit bull, they'd have to get through me and my 9mm, and then they would have to pry her leash out of my cold dead hand before I'd give her up. She is my child and I would gladly protect her with my life. We an unspoken rule, she protects me from dogs, and I protect her from humans that wish her ill-will.

If you want to keep your pit bull don't move to my town or you will lose it as per the city ban on the breed unless you are ready to massacre the whole city council with your 9mm. Sounds like you are the real danger in your "family".

My son rescued a little Pit Bul many years ago and in return she saved his life in more ways than one. The day he call his family and said it was time to put her down the family gathered to give him the support he needed. He took her out for her last stop at their favorite burger place and then headed to the doggie park for one last romp together. That afternoon he placed his best friend in the hands of his vet and stayed with her until the end. It was heart wrenching for all of us!! She always wanted a ride on the Harley so he rode down and picked up her ashes, and their last ride together was on the Harley. We still miss you Ginger!! RIP

We had a pit who was diagnosed with cancer. When it came time to put her down, our daughter drove for 3 days to see her one more time and 3 days back home. My husband and I both cried every day for almost a year, then one day I saw on Pet Finder a pic of a pit who was going to killed in 2 days, because the town had put a ban on them. She looked just like the one we lost. I showed the pic to my husband and told him she had 2 days to live, and he said, "I guess we better go get her". She was a two hour drive away. That was3 years ago, and we love this dog as much as our kids. She healed our hurt, but we still remember our first girl,, and each time I pass her grave, I speak to her and tell her I love her. We've owned dogs for more than 50 years, and we loved them all, but nothing took over our hearts like these two pit bulls. I thought I'd die when we lost the first one; I'm sure I'll die if I have to lose this one. People, be kinder to each other. You can disagree without being so mean. All these comments have just reinforced my feeling that dogs are better than people. If you read the news daily,, you'll learn that more PARENTS kill their OWN kids than pit bulls do, Can you imagine that??? Please, please , please don't mistreat pit bulls.......

I think pit bulls get such a bad rap because they are so often used in those dog fighting rings. I'm assuming that unless they are rescued and trained and loved after that, they would be vicious. Am I right? But most of what I've heard of late is how sweet and devoted they are to their owner. I must admit that if I see them, like at the vets or the pet store, they scare me a bit. But that's just because they are so big!!

My experience is all pit bulls should be shot. As a deputy sheriff in the Houston area every dog bite case I've been to involves a pit bull, and its usually a family member that gets bit. The owner always says "He's never done that before, I don't know what made him bite" I usually respond with " that what why do, they were breed to bite, not let go and kill. It's in their breeding." I don't want to hear about your sweet family pit bull thats been around the kids and how smart he is, if they do turn and they just might turn on you, someone is going to get hurt. You can not change my mind afer finding a kids ear for the paramedic or holding a lady's face together till ems arrives. Just be careful.

Lawdog, you are right on! These morons do not understand the genetic factor at play in these dogs. They have been bred for years to fight and fight to the death. Here in Illinois we have had untold numbers of cases where these dogs have gone off and mauled people. In Varna Illinois a 7 year old boy was ripped to pieces by 3 pitbulls that got out of there owners home. By the time the helicopter go there, the boy had totally bled out. Ripped his jugular and his femoral arteries in addition to all the other injuries. Imagine the death this little boy suffered because some idiot wanted to have pitbulls. I know the dogs are great until something sets them off, but the documented mayhem these dogs committ is undeniable except to those who think its cool to own a pitbull. Even PETA says that every pitbull brought to a dog pound should be euthanized.

MOST owners do not properly train their dogs. Be it a pit bull or any other breed. Therefore, when I hear the comment "It's never been mean before" I don't buy it. Most responsible pet owners KNOW how to properly train their animals and there is never any doubt. It really pisses me off the back woods redneck cops in Texas have this mentality to kill first and ask questions later. I live in Texas and disgusts me everyday. I belive police should be trained to properly respond to animal calls, not just go in guns blazing. ANY animal can and sometimes do revert to animal instincts, and usually it's those that were never properly trained. Get educated before you make some stupid ignorant opinion based on your experiences with a few dumb Texans.

I'm sorry, but everything you just said was ignorance to the fullest. Any dog is capable of doing so. It may or may not have anything to do with how they were raised. The same could be said for us though, anyone is capable of being a killer, does that mean that at some point each one of us is going to snap, and take someone else's life? Now of course I'm an APBT owner, not by choice, but because finally at the age of 18 my mom got me the dog I had been asking for, for 10 years. Now Bella, who is actually a APBT/Lab mix, is the best thing I could have ever asked for, it helps that we have the same birthday :) This summer will be her 3rd birthday, and my 21st. I could not imagine my life without her, she the best friend I always wanted. And as far as being around children go, she's amazing with my little sister, and all of my cousins. She's loves playing with them, and absolutely adores her cuddle time. All around I love her, just like I'd love a person, and can full-heartedly say that if anyone ever tried to take her away from me or tried to shoot her on site, like I know some City authorities like to do, they would have to take my life first before they ever got to her.

First of all, I want to say thank you for your law enforcement service. You have one of the most thankless jobs around. I cannot imagine for one moment what you've seen in your career. My only experience in law enforcement has been as a dispatcher for 28 years. Again, thank you for what you do.
However, it saddens me that you would paint the entire breed with the same brush. The most vicious dogs I've seen, both as just an observer and as a dog trainer, have been those who have come from an abusive home, and the dogs have not been of any one particular breed. There's no question that a fair portion of pitbull owners use their animals to boost their egos and make up for their lack of any social value to the world (I'm talking about the owner, not the dog). I am NOT referring to those loving and responsible homes who socialize their animals and spend time training them. I am referring to the low lifes that you, no doubt, have had the dubious pleasure to encounter. You know, the Michael Vick types. The jackwits who think there's nothing wrong with kicking a dog in the gut or slamming their head against a wall. Frankly, in my world, those kinds of people would be shot, not the dogs.
As a side note, the majority of the officers I worked with who had dogs had pits or staffies. Across the board they said the same thing, the dogs are just oversized lap dogs who would be more likely to help a burglar carry out the television than bite him.

I have a Jack Russell female and a Pekingese male. They normally get along fine but I must always cage at least one of them if I leave because sometimes Russell will attack the Peke if he makes a sudden move and would kill him as quick as she would a rabbit. This is because they are bred to go after game and sometimes they act automatically on instinct. The difference is, unlike the pit bull the Russell is small and pretty much incapable of killing a human although could certainly injure or kill a small child. I never allow her around children without supervision even though she seems to love playing with them and is loyal and loving toward me. Dogs can snap and the stats do not lie regarding severe injuries caused by pit bulls as the deputy said.

He has been neutered and is very happy. I love my pit! but i dont have a blind eye to what his is capable of doing.

If you are a police officer or retired officer, I am sure you have dealt with more traumatic experiences than a dog attack. If not I am sure the ems have, I am sure they have seen worst automobile accidents than dog bites. Now they got rabies spreading around by wild animals, think I would rather deal with a vaccinaed dog biting me over non vaccinated wild life attacking me or my children.

One more comment before I leave this thread....my son's roommate has a pit bull / dalmation mix. It looks more like a pit bull but has brown spots on white skin. But she is the sweetest dog ever. When I come to his house, she just loves to be petted and loved. Even the first time I met her, she snuggled up to me. I didn't realize she was part pit bull till he told me. But now that I look at her, I can see it. If you've never seen a dalmation/pit bull mix, its a sight to behold! :D

Try "studying" other dogs and see what you come up with..Two years? Two years is far from the 20 that I have PERSONALLY studied them, not by reading but by rescue as well as breeding...It's people who either have never owned a pit that lack the true study of the breed or the ones caught up in the ignorance (no disrespect intended)..Reading about something does NOT make what you are reading facts..I have rescued other breed that have been way more vicious then any pit bull I have owned or rescued.

Lindsay, If you have studied dog attacks all overthe world for 2 years, my question to you is how? Are you all over the world all the time in those 2 years? Or are you just reading stories that had been posted about dog attacks? One thing that is certain, if you are using the internet to gather information, you can find anything you want. If you want to say, Pit Bulls are bad and dangerous, you can find that information, if you want to say, Pit Bulls are good family pets you can find that information as well. So it is all out there. I believe until you own one or work with one at your local shelter, you are not informed to add your two cents for either debate. You can't believe everything you read-either way. All dogs can bite and will in the right situation. When bites are registered and I stress the WHEN, it is proven that 80% or better are a family pet bitting a family member. Yes bigger dogs can do more damage, that is a DUH for everyone. The facts are there that all dogs can and will do harm if put in the wrong situation. Same thing can be said about any Species. Get off the Pit Bull bashing and start just educating about all breeds and the responsibilities of owing a dog.

Michelle, You sound like a nice person. However, you're comment ignores the fact that breeding over a long time has left each breed with certain behavioral characteristics. Pointers point, retrievers retrieve, and while any dog will bite, pit bulls, when they go off, will continue the attack until whatever or whoever they are attacking is lifeless. This characteristic has been bred into the dogs by bad people. However, that doesn't change the fact the the characteristic is there and you can't be sure when it will surface.

Yes, owners are part of the problem but remember that most people who get dogs including pit bulls are not dog trainers and do not know how to train dogs. So the argument that owners are at fault because they don't train their pit bulls right is moot since most people have no idea how to train dogs.

Full name, You clearly don't fully understand the breed. You think you do but in fact you don't. The characteristics you are referring to is know as "gameness" it is the characteristic that makes the breed so special. The dog does whatever it is trained to do until it is told to stop. Thats where training comes in. As with any dog if the owner does not train the animal it won't listen. I don't know if you lived during the late 60s' and through the 70s' but Doberman Pinchers were known to attack for no reason. Even their owners. Owners learned then what Pit bull owners need to learn now. Know and understand the breed of dog you have. Show the dog you are the dominant one and he or she is the submissive one and take the time to properly train the animal. How many times have you seen someone chasing their dog down the street calling the dogs name and the dog won't listen, or when walking down the street with the dog on the leash the dog is pulling as hard as it can sometimes almost dragging the owner as he or she is holds on to the leash. Ex. A Rodesian Ridgeback (big dog) doing just that, Dragging the owner down the street while on the leash, getting away from the owner and attacking and killing someones' St. Charles Spaniel. When he tries to separate the dogs his dog attacks him. It happens. It's not just Pit bulls. A dog Should never be allowed to pull when on the leash and should always be made to obey simple voice commands. The most important command being the word "NO".

The horrific exploitation and condemnation of these awesome canines resembles of the dark ages. Pitbulls truly deserve more attention to our general public, we need to pursue education on the breed, and thank you to those who do. It is an inspiration. The only way to end the arbitrary and senseless discrimination is countering those with tunnel vision or falling for the media hype. In regards to the never-ending speculation of accounting pitbulls as the child-eating monsters which they are NOT, one should add this link to their library:
www.dogbreedinfo.com/children.htm Check out the safety rating for the American Bulldog and American Bully. There is a wealth of information for those who want to see the truth. The above data ratings on dogbreeds with children... it only represents what so many who love the bully breeds have observed and been fortunate to experience. Research... there is plenty available, it just takes an honest look to portray the breed truly for what it is in general - not to condemn a whole breed because of one's personal naivete or unwillingness to learn the reality and truth as a whole.

Well that story has made the rest of my night! Now one thing on pit bulls is they are mean for many reasons but the man on being the owner. People who dont have a proper home or treat the pit bull or any dog wrong will make the dog bad. It is like a child (not meaning children are like dogs) that the the parent or family can reflect on the child. That is why there are bullies because there is family issues or a bad role model in the home. So for pit bulls or let alone any dog can be good or bad depending on the owner and where it comes from. Above all though i loved this story, it was very inspiring and true! i hope it helped people look at pit bulls in a better way!

I swear if serial killers were magically changed into dogs we would see hosts of people telling us how loving and loyal they were. Most pit bulls are great but that doesn't negate the fact that sometimes they do snap and pity the child or adult that is nearby when they do. I love my dogs and the aren't pit bulls but if either of my dogs ever shows hostility toward a child they are history.

Once America's favorite dog.. remember Petey ? Now persecuted and victimized by those falling for media hypes and a few incidents who are regrettably feeding that hype, which is what sells. Get educated - simple. Quit smart assing the world when you in fact have not been lucky enough to spend time with or know the breed. It's not media hype when they report deaths and injuries caused by this breed. Many communities ban this breed and it isn't because of media hype but in every instance of banning this breed that I have heard of is the result of local attacks by these dogs. If you want a pit bull and they aren't banned in your community then get one but keep it caged or in a secure fence and allow no one around it unsupervised.

since people seem to think you gotta be an idiot and gangbanger to own pits, here is some useful information for you: i am in my mid20s and so is my husband. i have a b.a. in business and i own several rentals and i have my own business. my husband is a diesel mechanic and we are doing just fine, better than most people in their late 50s. and the best thing about my family is that we own two pits and we rescued several and we will be getting another one soon. I have no criminal past nor does my husband, so save your comments about gang members, etc. because i hate nothing more than criminals and people living off the state. How many dogs, especially pits have you heard off that were set on fire by humans, they were fought for humans for their entertainment and some money, they were dragged by cars for no reason, etc. so who is the vicious animal in that case. its the human being? so since you people think vicious animals should be eliminated you should start eliminating the human race because they are the most vicious and they have a free will to do so. Once you meet a pit and own one, you will never want to own any other breed. I am very tired of some know it all ppl that have never met, petted a pit but know it all. you dont know jack. Keep watching your fox news and adore the protectors of society ('cops) that shoot dogs for their looks. you are not more than a bunch of sheep that will never succeed in life.

Since you have done so much research Im sure you have looked into other breeds and injuries that have occured from bites. Your accounts of neighbors being bitten doesnt exacly count as evidence into the pit bull breed. I was bit by a chow, my parents maltese bit someone and ive personally witnessed a rabid dalmation. I wouldnt claim to be an expert on this subject but Im pretty sure if my little dog bit someone I would expect to be accountable for my dogs actions. The owners are the ones responsible. I will say it is pretty incredible that you can go read a story about a dog saving someone and people will leave comments that the breed should be eliminated. Wow. It must be horrible to be so unhappy that you can turn wonderful things so terrible.

Say 100 people buy 100 cars, Statistics say 1, 2 or a few may get a lemon, but that doesn't make the whole brand bad, including Cadillacs. So Bite-me.

I don't condemn the whole breed but if Cadillacs had a reputation of blowing up without warning whether it is 1 in 100 or more i would not trust the brand and would buy something else.

i apologize this reply is going to be a couple comments long, but i feel that its important infomation to put out there. yes, pitbulls were bred with the intent to be "fighting dogs" what most people dont realize is that fighting dogs were meant to fight other animals.period.dog pit rules shed light on the pit dogs themselves.pit bulls had to be safe around humans,it is 100% wrong to assume that the best fighting dogs were vicious and uncontrollable monsters.the way dog fights were structured, humans had to handle the dogs in and around the dog pit.a savage dog would be a dangerous liability to its owner, the owner of its apponent, the seconds, and the judges. b/c of the potential for "doctoring" a dogs coat w some bitter tasting or poisonous liquid that would affect the biting from the other dog, each pit bull had to be washed, in full view of the crowd, before the fight began. to make sure the dog was really washed, each dog owner would turn his fighter over to a representative (or "second") affiliated with the other dogs owner for the washing. (what would have happened if these dogs were not trustworthy around strangers?) -continued-

No, they were bred to be aggressive. They were thrown in with other dogs to fight but whenever they decide to attack they don't stop and think whether the opponent has dog or human dna.

meredith collard

1:30 am on Monday, June 4, 2012

much like human pugilism, the dogfighters could have a break in the fight to provide simple cooling off and other permitted ministrations to keep a badly hurt dog fighting. most people in the general public know that it is not safe to approach an injured dog; yet, that is just what the pit buls owner would do when needed and allowed during a dog fight. imagine if a pit bull didnt have a stable temperment. think of the danger of trying to handle an injured dog that was still affected by the heat of the battle!my point?a fighting dog could not be agressive toward human beings and survive. it was common practice to kill off ANY dogs that were vicious and untrustworthy. it should go without saying that such dogs would never be allowed to produce offspring that might have similiar bad temperaments.contrary to belief, theres no accurate scientific data on dog bite statistics.the CDC stopped tabulating dog bites by breed over ten years ago. -continued-

In fact,CDC opposes breed-specific legislation for the very simple reason that you can't back up those policies with reliable statistics. The CDC says that studies that indict particular breeds are unreliable. Dr. Randall Lockwood of the ASPCA calls the focus on specific breeds, "a 19th century epidemiological mindset."

Last season on the Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan had an episode on which dog breed is the most dangerous. Can anyone of you guess which dog breed it is? IT IS ANY DOG WHO HAS NOT BEEN PROPERLY HANDLED AND TRAINED BY THEIR OWNER. IT'S NOT ONE BREED IT IS ALL BREEDS, SADLY THE MEDIA FOCUS IS ON PIT-BULLS', GERMAN SHEPHERD'S, ROTTWEILER'S, BULL TERRIER'S ETC, ETC. A DANGEROUS DOG IS ANY BREED! WE AS A SOCIETY ARE TO BLAME FOR BAD BREEDS AND PET OVER POPULATION. UNTIL WE GET THIS INFO INTO OUR BRAINS NOTHING WILL EVER BE DONE ABOUT IT! END COMMERCIAL BREEDING FACILITIES OTHER WISE KNOWN AS PUPPY MILLS!

you got that right. All dogs have the potential to bite and be mean. I had a cocker spaniel, used to take him hunting for pheasants, but if he could get a hold of a groundhog or any other small bird or animal he'd attack it and that went for other dogs as well. He bit my son for no reason at all, I observed him just ran up to him and bit hem in the back. This was over thirty years ago, Some of his aggression was the fault of bad training.( my fault, no one elses.) Some I believe was inherant as his father was a bit overly aggressive. My point is that I believe if I had better knowledge of how to train him he might not have been this way. I've had several dogs since him, all Labs and Lab/ golden mixes but took the time to learn how to work with them asnd they have all been a pleasure to own. As for puppy mills: Laws need to be enforced to put a stop to that travesty but that is a whole nother conversation.

I had several dogs all breed, But my Brittany was a fawn red nose Pit Bull she was the most loyal kind and gentle dog. she was the smartest dog I know from all my dogs. i got her at 7weeks old and i never had to train her it was all ready programmed into her. she would heal follow sit lay down stay everything yo would train them she already did them without me telling her what to do. It just so said that I got in a fight with my mother and she took my dog. while in my moms care she got real skinny and went blind she past away on Friday June 1st. But I want you to Know a dog can be anything you want them to be it is how you raise them. kind and gentle they will love you and be loyal forever and be just like on of your kids. mean and abusive that is what you will end up with a mean and hateful animal that will maul anything in its path. Btw you cant teach the dog to fight feed it gun powder put big anchor chains around its neck and expect the dog to love you.

needs more than an understanding of the English language for paying an outrageous amount of money for a designer dog that's not even recognized by the AKC...perhaps you should have used some of that money spent on a "mutt" to buy a couple of brain cells.

I own a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. She is the sweetest dog around. Staffies are the gentlest bulky breed around. My friend has a German Short hair pointer that has attacked a dog,cat and their daughter. The dog & cat lived but were at the vets for weeks. His daughter had stitches in her arm and leg. These were 3 separate occasions. My neighbors Chihuahuas have bitten my hands, fingers and ankles so many times when I go visit her. Those little dogs are more dangerous then my staffie is. She is lovable, loyal and so gentle. Love the pitty breed.

I have 3 dogs, a German Shepherd, a yellow lab, and a pitbull and I can tell you that the pitbull is the youngest of the 3 and also the best behaved. The Lab is the most agressive and also the hardest to train, my Shephard is a good dog but a bit hyper, not my pit she is mellow, loving, and also the only one that plays with my 3 cats.

I'm loving my second pit bull mix in the same way I loved my first one. These dogs are phenomenal. This one, like the first one, attracts other dogs like nothing I've ever seen before, and in the most loving way. They climb under gates to visit her. Both of my pits were rescues, and one was surrendered as well at the city shelter. The other just appeared at my doorstep. Neither pit has barked at other dogs, only people they do not know. How protective is that?? Talk about intelligent? This pit figured out how french doors worked and let her and her retriever buddy in and out of doors that were supposed to be off limits. She jumped over baby gates like they were made of tinsel. She is flexible and runs like a deer. Yes, we have watched both of our pits get excited and run in circles, but to no one's harm. They are very, very conservative creatures and they are fine with routine. It's when something out of the ordinary happens that something in them gets triggered. I have never in my life seen animals that are so loyal, however. And as to cats, these pits want to be loved by them, but the cats often taunt them, and I don't know why. I think it's because they like to push their noses into the cats. My current pitbull, together with her retriever buddy, raised a premature kitten who now thinks the dogs are her parents.

i DON'T HAVE TIME TO READ ALL THE POSTS. Breeds were originated (mostly) to do a "job". Registration & pedigrees were instituted so the genetics could be studied in order to match up the right individuals when breeding. Additional info is included yearly in Germany so all health checks are listed, working scores, Names & numbers of all dogs, breeding approval, etc etc.. This is why German bred dogs command a premium around the world. Mandatory quality control gives the best results so the dogs are built & act so they do their job well. Most PB are bred randomly by people with NO clue about ANYTHING related to proper breeding, care, training, etc. PBs were originated to BITE & Kill... not people but dogs. However since they became popular dogs with incorrect temperaments actually & in the pedigree are used for breeding. There are REAMS of PB bites & killings on the web. PBs killed the OWNER in Camden in 2011. Two running loose mangled a mans feet so badly they needed to be amputated in 2012. This subject is TOO complicated & deep to cover in this space.

I have just a few simple facts to add to this. First every dog through the history of the world whether it is a big dog or a small dog has served a purpose in the human world. Whether it be protection, hunting, or companionship, we have groomed them for our purposes. We have used them as protectors, whether it is simply barking when someone or something has come inside their territory lines, or going full out protection stance and ready alertness, to, like the dog in the article, finding help for the ones they love who love them back...We have honed them to be the hunter, which for most breeds is part of their natural abilities, some have honed, others have exploited, Jacks were used to clear out any burrowing vermin on farms and in communities, to the very big and lanky Irishwolf hound who we sent out to chase/fight wolves to save our livestock, to Akitas that were bred to ward off bears, as were Chow-Chows, but our greatest use of these friends was we "wanted" them in "our" worlds and homes. I have 2 Pitts now, I have had a Golden who suffered in her older years from "red-eye", which is a very, mean and agressive temperment change that has no trigger other than chemical imbalance, I have owned an Akita who was a total baby, A german shepherd who was excellent at protecting her "children", which was my brothers and myself, to a Cocker Spaniel. I have loved each and everyone of these dogs, and each one brought something special into my life.

Remember that dogs are descendants of wolves.
study and understand their laws and all is well.
Leaernto commun icate with our animal brotherin and we will all be able to live on in relative peace.
I have fed wild birds feom my hands, petted tigers, communicated peacefully with orangutans, and wlked in the woods with wild bears. The only time I waa ever injured was when I had to catch an ape barehanded, who was in fear of being harmed. Aftrer the capture he held my hand through the day until his handler arrived.

I only say leafn to communicate with all creatures and be kind..

Remember all dogs descend from wolves, learn to u nnderstand their needs and help to befriend them an d be kind.

As the dominant species, you are needed to help the lesser species.

Remember trhat if you take their space on earth, you are hurting their lives and denying them a place to live in peace.

Finally a positive story about a pit bull. I have three and they are the most loving dogs I've ever had. For all those people talking bad about pit bulls, if you owned one you would know why pit bull owners love their dogs so much. My vet told me he gets bitten mostly by chihuahuas and poodles, but rarely by a pit bull. ANY dog will bite if they're being teased by a child, and unfortunately a pit bull has a very strong jaw, but that doesn't mean they bite more than any other dog. It only makes the headlines because it's more sensational. Not too many people would read a story that said "poodle bites child." Pit bulls are normally very calm dogs. My babies were very gentle around my grandson. They adored him and followed him around everywhere he went. Of course, I would never leave him alone with them, but I wouldn't leave a child alone with ANY dog. My dogs were very well-behaved and easily trainable. They always wanted to please because they loved getting praise and affection.

To say any "one" dog is more agressive or mean or monsterous than another, forgets the basics....all dogs have teeth, all dogs have tempements, and all dogs are territorial. We as humans and supposedly the smarter creature, have the capabilities to help socialize, teach and nurture them to be our companions, our friends, and they rely on us to keep them safe too, not to be abused, then accused, and even worse refused. I love and loved everyone of them. therefore I believe we are the responsible party for thier behavior good and bad.

Better make sure you never fall in love with a shelter dog. Most of these dogs are mixed, and yes, they have some form of terrier. Whether it be staffordshire, american, wire hair - got some news for ya, all of these dogs come from the same family line. You make sure you spend top dollar for a pure breed, that by the way may have been a creation of its brother and sister for parents....oh wait, maybe that is your excuse! It is astonishing to me that so many people continue to think pit bulls are vicious dogs just waiting to attack. Just tell that to the man whose pit bull took a bullet in the neck, or, the woman nearly hit by a train whose pit bull pulled her out of the way, taking the full brunt of the hit and losing a foreleg in the process. Any dog can bite, but, I will bet you any money that it was the human being who precipitated the occurrence at least 90 percent of the time, and, I am being generous to humans with my percentage.

Well my son and I rescued a young pit from what we truly believed to be a breeder of fighting dogs. Our little girl ended up just being too little and wasn't going to be a good fighter for them. The only good she might have been would have been a "bait" dog. I honestly have nightmares thinking about how she might have had that fate. We have had her 4 years now and I must say that even though I was more than concerned in the beginning (as a result of all of the media hype) I can honestly say now that over the course of my lifetime I personally have never had a better companion. She is so smart and so loving. I became terminally ill 3 years ago with a very serious and rare neurological pain disease. It began in my feet and legs. My pain is excruciating. Our sweet pitty Jules would literally lay by my side for hours and I would wake to her licking my feet and legs. She KNEW that this was the area of my severe pain. It would just amaze me!! She would just lay there beside me and cry, never leaving my side. I have 2 grandchildren that are now 8 and 10. They were 4 and 6 when Jules came into our lives. She has loved these children just as much as they have loved her. The only complaint that I have about our pitty is that she has to be right there with you at all times. She gets SO excited and wants to share her love with you. She still believes that she is a 10 lb pup. She loves to romp and play with other doggies.....she just loves everyone1!

If you raise them right and get them from a "trusted" breeder, then pit bulls are great LOYAL family members!! Don't hate what you don't know, and don't assume cause you don't know! The reality is there are pit attacks just like poodle attacks-all dogs have the ability, just pits get blamed for more then they do and some people don't know the difference. Next time there is a so called pit bull attack, look at the dog..is it really a pit bull? Is there proof? Think about that before making false judgements!

I have bred and raised pits all my life, NONE of them ever have attacked a person or child. I have children and would trust My pits with my children more then people!! However I am sometimes weary of other people's pits because I don't know how they raised them or if they were overbred or have a family history of fighting. I know pits can be vicious but it is the way they are raised and or bred. But just because you hear a "pit bull" attack on the news does NOT mean it was in fact a pit bull. I notice ALOT of these so called pit bull attacks are NOT actually pit bulls, they just "assume" it's a pit bull or pit mix. Unless there are papers that prove it, don't buy into it cause so many mixed dogs that are NOT pits, tend to look alot like pits, and the media runs with it. I had a neighbor that had a mixed lab that bit a child and the media went after it like it was a pit attack. It was lab and shepard mix-not a pit bull but they got the attention they wanted and this happens more often then most people know.

English Bull dog, American Bull Dog. I asked my vet "where in the hell did "PIT" enter into it? Thus my education; Pit bulls got their name/signia from being BRED with other heavier, easily provoked and easily MADE agressive dogs. Idiots found they could have their SICK FUN to put them in a PIT (circle) to watch and bet on which dog had been abused enough to fight possibly to their death or cause the death of another dog. American bull dogs normally topped the scale at around 40 pounds. Now through breeding they can average 50 to 85 pounds of sheer muscle. There is a lot of inbreeding thought to contribute to this unpredictable behavior. These these dogs have been given recognition by the AKC, soley becuase there are so many of them in existance. I have a Lab/Pit Bull Mix (aquired at 8 WEEKS) and believe me it has taken my relentless attention to make sure he does not harm anyone. He truly is mentally ill with his unpreticable behavior flipped on like a switch for no ryhme no reason. I hope I never again have the misfortune of adopting a dog who's unpredictable behavior has been exhausting. He is 12 years old as of this December and somewhere in his brain and heart I know he realizes how lucky his life has been with me. I've been told by many his luck would have run out a long time ago.

Truth is any dog can bite, be nasty or hurtful. They can also be very caring and loving. But we can't trust any dog completely. We dont speak their language and can't read their minds. So if you really care keep a careful watch at all times. I have two lab mutts and love them but I love my three kids under five years old more. It only takes one time... to change a life forever. There have been too many stories where the owners say they don't undrstand why their dog bit someone because he has never shown aggression to anybody. I believe they are telling the truth so I believe that the possibility ,even though it is so very slight, exists and we need to be on the llok out for it

You know people kill me,slinging mud at each other, etc. All you animal scholars out there should remember one thing, animals are animals and act as such.Any dog, cat,or what have you can be loving most of the time and get aggressive in an instant. So there is no perfect breed in anything.....oh that also includes HUMANS!

I was a skeptic for the longest time; I still get concerned around Pits I do not know. I own a pit bull now; that I adopted from the local SPCA here in Florida. OMG she is such a wonderful companion to me and my family. She so loves to play; loves the outdoors; she loves to talk to us (dog talk...LOL). She enjoys her walks; chases squirrels...lol. Loves to fetch and play tug-a-war with her knotted rope. She is the biggest sweetest darling and so wants to be a lap dog to us. My (Lady) has so much changed my feelings towards this breed. I love her as much as my own kids now. My neighbor behind us also has one; a male. I finally ventured out to him from through the fence between us and wow he is such a good dog too. Very much like my (Lady). It is so true these are loving dogs. They started as as ranch dogs from the history I've read about them. If you find one who is vicious it's because the owner breed that dog to be like that. I feel sorry for the pit because their owner has mistreated their pit in this manner. They are strong muscular dogs; but also so loving if you'll just allow them to be loving. I hate what the media has done to this breed. Many do not understand because of bad press. If you find a pit who has not been bullied; Love them and you will be rewarded with love back two fold. Yes I was one to be skeptic in the past. Never again. Just watch out for the bullies. Love them as your children. Animal lovers will never be the same again. These dogs change you.

Someone had it correct above when they said *DOGS ARE PART OF A PACK*. No matter what breed, DOGS WILL BITE AND OR ATTACK. We once *adopted* a lost pit who we named Buddy, he was old but a sweet lovable dog I must admit. Our dog Sebastian, who is part St Bernie/Collie, quite a huge dog * Buddy got alog really well.
Summer day, everyone is out front on the lawn, Buddy was laying down sunbathing, Sebastian was sitting by me... our neighbors dog, a pit mix, decided to jump the fence, ran over to sebastian and started attacking him for no reason. Buddy came flying over from the other side of the lawn, and tackled the other pit in defense of sebastian, Chased the other one home, came back over to sebastian, sniffed him and licked him, like making sure he was ok... which he was. Buddy laid right down next to him for the rest of the afternoon. Again, a pit would not by our first pick of the crop so to speak. We will never ever forget Buddy and what he did for our family and Sebastian that day. RIP Buddy, you are surely missed.

What a wonderful story. Now on behalf of Pit Bulls and to all the negative insensitive comments. I for one use to be afraid of Pitt Bulls due to the portrayal of them through the media. What made me change my thoughts of them was when I was looking to replace my Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier that passed away. They are known to have a great reputation with children. While searching for one to adopt on petfinder.com, I noticed that most Wheatens were not good with children while most of the Pitts were. These dogs are carefully screened so therefore, I trust these shelters. It just broke my heart to see the amount of Pitts up for adoption that are ALL good dogs. The problem is that many people want a puppy and not a dog or, they have absolutely no knowlege on how to raise a puppy with postive reenforcement and love. Tug of war games and mouthing are out of the question and easily taught with just a little patience. Another thing I noticed are people that use these dogs as a way of being macho or financial gain. Geez, I wish they would just get a job or see a shrink on how to build there on inferiority complex. More and more Pitts are proving how loyal and dedicated they are through people like Ceasar Milan who has trained other dogs on how to behave by using Daddy (R.I.P.) to rehabilitate them.

Its interesting how so many are so open minded and have obviously adopted a "the few aren't representative of the group" philosophy on these dogs. Even in the light of so many examples of pit bulls murdering innocent babies asleep in their cribs. I have to wonder if those same people are this "open minded," and have that same philosophy about people of other races (blacks?) when they hear bad stories about them. I doubt it.

While I appreciate the loyalty some Pit owners have displayed here, the last time I read so many ignorant comments, I think they were quotes from Paris Hilton. Pit Bulls are extremely dangerous, (yes, even your sweet one) no one with a brain stem and the ability to read can claim otherwise. Of course some of this blame falls on incompetent owners, but not all of it. There are thousands of stories of loving, affectionate Pits that attack and the owner says "he'd never hurt a fly before", which of course is only true until it's not. The last extensive 20 year study of fatal dog attacks in the US, a hair below third were documented Pit Bulls, some 500 dog breeds and 32% of the deaths were caused by Pitties, Rottweilers were a very distant 2nd at 18%. As recent as 2007, an even more staggering figure was nearly double, 60% were Pit Bulls! Good, now we know we can all read and spare me the "last week I read a Poodle killed someone" nonsense. Ignoring 200 years of selective breeding isn't undone by a "good owner". These staggering figures will only change when Pit owners recognize what kind of dog they own. Stop leaving them off-lead, stop leaving them with small children and for God's sake, stop turning a blind eye to the cold hard facts. They are magnificent animals, as a breeder myself I know a good dog when I see one, but it's in their very DNA to attack, so don't let your child or a weak woman walk them, never let them off the leash and perhaps the statistics will change.

Uh excuse me. I did in fact read on AOL appx 2 weeks ago about a 3month old baby boy, while sitting in his swing, and mom n grandmom folded clothes, was attacked by the family dog, who was a LAB MIX. Thank you very much. And it was not a LAB PIT MIX EITHER. I do believe it was a lab/shephard mix. And my neighbor's dog who is a daschund too, attacked my son and bit the hell out of his leg for no reason. As well as attacking a family member, who was a child. in the same area the dog bit my son.

We just adopted a part pit puppy at a local Critterfest. Daisy is so smart and sweet and we all adore her including our 7yo Lhasa Apso. All dogs can bite or attack. My family English Setter chewed up my face when I was 8 years old. I was climbing up on a daybed with a bowl of jello and startled the dog. It broke my heart when my parents sent Jack away. The thing that scares me regarding a pit is how strong they are. They are some of the most beautiful dogs but if something happened with a pit I know I couldnt pull the dog away. I hope the dog's owner is ok and will be back with her dog soon.

I own a 6 yr old mastiff that we rescued 2 yrs ago. Mastiffs were originally bread for bear baiting and are still considered a bully breed. I have 2 children and a 8lb cat and 18lb cat. My 8lb declawed rescue cat put my 100+ mastiff in its place 2 weeks after we brought him home. Maybe my cat should be considered a bully breed. I am very careful when I take my dog out for walks because you never know what a dog is going to do, no matter what size the dog is. We have had toy dogs actually chase my dog. He is afraid of the beagle next door, but my dog would be considered the agressor because of his size. I am more afraid of the ankle biter dog then I am a pit. I personally wouldn't even consider a small dog. I will stick to my "lap" dog.

Did you know....that pit bulls were originally bred as 'nanny dogs?' Seriously, look up the history. Back in the 1800s, pits were there to protect the children and wife while husbands and fathers were away. They were used as nannies to accompany children while they were outside playing in case of events such as wild animal attacks, strangers, etc. Know the truth about pit bulls before you give them such a bad rap. Many of the 'vicious pit bull attacks' are actually pits that were bred for fighting or to protect drug houses. Any dog can turn on a person. It is simply how you treat them, so treat your dog with love, kindness and care: as you would another human being.

...pit bulls also needed their own guard dogs - they used to be protected by rottweillers. If the pits didn't have protection, they would wander off with people because they were so eager to please people, they would - and still do to this day - do whatever it takes to please their owner, whether it be right or wrong behavior! Good job on knowing facts! I love well informed readers :)

Pitbulls are not bad it's the owners, they should see jail time up to 10 years and a large fine in the thousands. All they seam to get is a slap on the wraist. Any animal who is hurt in anyway, should get this and it's the people that are the bad ones. I for one would like the see their pictures and names and address on the internet, tv, and in the newspaper, to repeat every 6 months. If u can't get anyone to do it I'll do it.

Okay, for starters their jaws do not lock and they do not have the strongest bite of any other dog. Where do you people get your research from??? I'm an avid dog lover, and have 2 dogs myself. I have taken my dogs to the dog park for 3 years "religiously" ( Mon-Thurs, for a couple hours each day ). My dog has been bitten 3 times, dogs will be dogs... and there have been quite a few instances where dogs have gotten into it... With all the pit bulls I have seen come through that park ( there have been a ton ), there has only been one occasion that involved a pit, and the dog that initiated it was a know aggressor, which shouldn't have been in the park. All the other "fights" were labs, shepards, poodles, etc... They are very tenacious dogs, who give their all when it comes to doing a "job". There were 22 deaths caused by pit bulls last year ( pit bull mixes ), which is by no mean okay, but you have a 3 times more of chance by being struck and KILLED by lightning, how many people do you know have been killed by lightning, not just struck, killed? If, 1 dog has killed I'm sure there's at least 1 human behind it. As such with guns, guns don't kill people, people with guns kill people ( yes, I have my fair share of guns ). It is man that ruins everything, Look up the number of cannibalism attacks this year, I know of at least 5, so far this year, without looking it up, forget the pits, worry about your neighbor...

I agree to Masters comment. It is never the breed of the dog, but on how the owners treat their dogs. Like the german shepherd attacking a family member but finding out the dog was starving. Why own an animal if you don't know how to treat them. I guess to inflick pain. We need to hear more stories like this. That dog was trully loved and would do anything to save their owner. All it takes is TLC TLC TLC.

Before you people judge a pit bull-own one first. Reading about them, listening to news media ect, does not make you an expert! It makes you a buyer into false statements. Most so called pit bull attacks are not in fact pit bulls..They just look like them but alot of mixed dogs look like pits. Some people just like being ignorant..me, I like facts..If you own or owned one, then you know..if you don't or haven't, then your words are UN-facted. Do you know how the pit bull that attacked was treated in the home? do you know if it was abused, starved or was inbred? No, you just know what you heard-unfacted! Get one, train it, don't abuse, or starve it. treat it with respect and then come on here and post FACTS..

my American Bulldog ( the breed is about the same as a pit--both of the "bully breed" family truly is the most loyal being I have ever met. My Hannah is the true definition of unconditional love. She is our first "kid" and had 2 children after we were married. My kids have climbed on her, kissed her, etc. and she never ever flinched! My bulldog never even stole any food the kids were holding when they were toddlers. We have moved 2 times since having her, and my kids have had many different children over, and Hannah has NEVER given us any reason for concern.
My dog is 12 years old, we got her from a Bully rescue 2 states away, and after she passes we will get another Bully from a rescue again!

My son lived in Vancouver, Wa and was fishing in the Columbia river. A man came to the river with a black trash bag. My son asked him what was in the bag. He explained two dogs from his purebred pit bull who escaped her pen and got pregnant. He can't keep them or sell them. My son told him if he would give the dogs to him he would never see them again. My son raised the two dogs but had to find a home for the female because of his cats. He kept the male and trained him. He called me and said he is moving back here. I told him NO PIT BULL. As I was ignorant and did not know the breed. That dog now lives with us and we love him SOOO much. He is a little gentleman and even gives our cats a kiss if they get close to him. They will put their paw out to touch him when he passes them. He is so gentle with them and us. He is ten years old now and has been the joy of our lives. Our son is a good dog trainer. He has never laid a hand on him but with soft tspeaking and kindness he has trained a breed considered vicious to a sweet gentle kind soul. His last dog a chow-lab mix was the same way. My son now says, He couldn't pry his dog from us because we're so attached to him. God bless this woman for her good deeds and I hope she gets well and can read all these good thoughts about her and her dog. Her dog is a hero for saving her life. Kay in Arizona.

Why do people always try to turn a beautiful story about a loyal dog into a platform for their own imagined fears? I'm sure more than half of the people on here who wrote about horror stories "they've heard" never had any personal experience with pit bulls or, for that matter, pets in general.

Pitties and Staffies are a loyal breed, the family dog of choice at one point. Often called "nanny dogs" pits are reknowned for their care of children. We have a pittie and a staffie (not the first of either we've had) and both dogs are sweet, affectionate, very good with kids and adore our cats.

That some ill-bred, uneducated people have turned the dogs' best qualities against them to use them for fighting has become the stuff of which sensational headlines arise. Don't believe everything you read, folks. Try to have an open mind and you'll see that for the few "bad" dogs out there, dogs who have been made bad by bad owners, there are THOUSANDS of wonderful pit bulls with loving families who stand by the breed.

WOW!!! I don't believe I live in America, and I am still hearing 1950's hatred and contempt in 2012!! I have read through quite a few comments here, some for, some against the breed. How are we as a nation blaming a breed? Does that even make sense? I think not. When a child behaves badly, is it their fault, the parents fault, or the fault of society in general? I think some of you out there need to stop talking out your behind. If you are scared of a breed, or a person, why don't you just take the time to learn the FACTS about something before you open your mouth and insert every shoe you own! Yes, every dog is capable of doing harm. Yes, every person is capable of doing harm. Yes, we as a society have the abilty and the FREEDOM of choice. I am not insinuating that we can't have opinions, I just wish some research would go into our information before the words come out that makes everyone look uneducated. Please people, just open your minds a little...read something once in a while - other than a blog!

Really if they banned people like Michael Vick, then that would solve a lot wouldn't it? This dog did a great thing for her owner. People are such trash talkers and know it alls. I do not have pit bulls, So I am not going to say I know this or that about them. I do think if an owner trains his or her dogs, treats him/her well, and has dog leashed or in the yard then it is their own business. I have small dogs and I do not want someone telling me what I can have and what i cannot if I am a responsible pet owner. How many people are killed by teen drivers? Maybe we can ban them in our neighborhoods. They are, as a group, inherently dangerous behind the wheel just because they are teens and in that "stupid" age group. I have had 3 of them. I know. Some teen drivers are worse than others. Often because mom and dad allow those who are ill prepared or poorly supervised to drive. Works the same with dogs, doesn't it? You often have people killed by loose dogs very often or people who are stupid and go into a yard uninvited. yes, you could teach your child not to go into a yard uninvited, not to taunt a dog, or by God, you could supervise your kid. We need to go after stupid people who are not living up to their responsibility, not just ban a breed.

Hope her owner makes a complete recovery, May the goddess keep her watch over her. I'm glad her loyal pitt was able to get her help. Any breed could do this, but I'm glad this got the pitts some much needed good press they sure need it now. My little feist has actually saved my life twece but would he run for help, I doubt it when I've fallen and been unable to get up he's stayed with me and tryed to help me get up like a 15lb dog can help, when he realizes he can't get me up he starts in with his frantic barking that really carrys now that would probably draw attention to me if I weren't consious. He's smarter than care givers I've had trist me, and think twice or three times before condemming your parents to a rest home. I was in one for almost a year we won't go there but that's where I fell and laid for almost an hour in the freezing cold before Dar's barking finally got someone's attention. I'm in an apartment now thankfully.

Once again my thoughts are for a speedy recovery to the pitt's owner so she can thank her loyal pet in person with hugs and treats although I'm sure her daughter is doing that now.

yes, there are bad dogs just as there are bad people. You can blame it on upbringing and breeding, same as in people. There have been attacks by Chihuahuas, St. Bernards, Labradors, Yorkshire Terriers, Dachsunds, Pits, Rottis, German Shepards, Dobies, ANY BREED of dog you can name has attacked someone at some point in time. That doesn't mean that EVERY dog of a certain breed is bad. Same as not every person of a "certain breed" is bad. If a dog acts badly, blame it on the breeder, the trainer and the owner. Those are the culprits in a dog bite or dog attack. Not the dog, which is doing what it was trained or allowed to do. If you treat your dog like a part of the family and socialize it properly, along with training it "manners", you will have a life long companion. If you don't, you get a dog that is, basically, mentally ill, and will crack at unknown times.

I like all of the generalizations on here. Ok, so let's see.....Hitler was a German, so all Germans are Nazis. Mussolini was a terrible person, so let's boycott Italian food. All British people have bad teeth. Everything on Fox News is accurate. Its all fact. Jesus effen Mary and Joseph! Do you see how stupid that sounds? Its the same thing with Pitbulls.

I am so very glad to see this story. I am a Rottir owner, but love all animals. I can only say if you give an animal love and fair treatment you will get the same back. I have seen way to many dogs left outside in all kind of weather to fend for themselves. Love a dog they will love you back!

Dear people so obsessed with ignoring the beauty and positivity of this story,
stop with your ignorance.
bring your negativity and prejudice somewhere else.
Pit bulls are dogs. Dogs are amazing blessings in our lives. Ignorance is caused by fear and I hope your hate for the breed can be subdued by knowledge and research, rather than preconceived
notions.

Thank you to the Patch for giving pitbulls the light they deserve. This article will save the lives of many pits that may have otherwise been overlooked in our overcrowded shelters.

Negative pitbull cowards, bring your darkness to a forum that deserves it.

Thanks.

I'm so glad that the dog did this but it's unfortunate that these dogs have pre existing disability in the brain caused by breeding. Their brain continues to grow causing massive pressure and inducing violence. It is truly sad but you never know what you will get when you cross breed.

No it does not, I looked that up too. Lock jaws is bs and usually medical if any animals jaw locks. And if a dogs brain would continue to grow it would be too large for their skull and they would die.

To some people: obviously you are as aggressive or more aggressive than the breed's image. Maybe that's the problem, dog gets aggressive owner becomes aggressive... I would also like to point out this is a MIX meaning it is not a pedigree...kind of dilutes the pit bull...

What a great rescue, good dog. The dogs face really looks so much like a Dutch Shepherd. Dutch Shepherds are Natural Protectors, Obedient, Alert and vigilant,Very intelligent, Loyal and reliable, Highly trainable, Good with children: Dutch shepherd (Hollandse herder) is a dog breed native to Holland. Originally bred for farm labor, including sheep herding, today this versatile and intelligent breed is often used in guide dog programs and police K-9 units. Dutch shepherds are great pets. Dutch shepherds come in three varieties: short coat, long coat and rough (sometimes referred to as wire) coat. Their fur is brindle patterned, with colors ranging from light brown to black. They are well-muscled, medium-sized dogs that can reach a height of 26 inches and weigh between 50 and 80 pounds, when fully grown. In the eighteenth century, Dutch shepherds were bred as sheep dogs in farms across The Netherlands. They kept sheep away from crops and accompanied flocks to pastures, markets and ports. On the farm, the dogs herded cows, pulled milk carts and guarded against intruders. By the mid-nineteenth century, industrialization in Holland led to a decline in sheep herding, while dog training was just becoming popular. Dutch shepherds began to transition into a new role as trained police, search-and-rescue, tracking and guide dogs.

Pit bulls DO NOT have LOCK JAW. Ignorance is hard to battle, you must live in the stone age to still believe that one. No breed of dog has locking jaws just somehave more muscle and a stronger bite. As an owner of 12 pit bulls over my lifetime, I can honestly judge the breed through experience. How many have you owned? I would own no other breed! This is an all American breed that if not socialized with dogs, people, children, exercised and treated right can be dangerous but then again that's the general rule for ALL breeds. I have never had a human aggressive dog. I don't have great guard dogs because if raised right this breed sucks at guarding. I've rescued and bought specific bloodlines all were amazing dogs. I will say they can and will be dog aggressive if not socialized with dogs.
A so called trainer posted that she doesn't believe this dog is even a pit mix and it's false publicity for the breed. Welcome to what happens to the breed daily in a negative way. There are so many dog bites and fatalities blamed on the breed when the dog who did it doesn't have a drop of pit in it. This is what owners and lovers of the breed fight daily, unfair and unjust BSL laws because ignorant people who have zero experience of the breed believes everything they see in news, TV and the Internet. . . Ignorance is the biggest battle!! Punish the deed not the breed!!!!!

I work in a boarding facility. Its never the american pit bull terriers or the american staffordshire terriers (they are not the same breed) that aren't too friendly. Its always the smaller breeds or other "non vicious" breeds that don't want anything to do with us and will growl and try to bite. I know that pets are usually scared when boarding but if the "vicious" breeds don't try to attack us when scared what does that say about them. I'm just saying experience dog breeds first hand before spreading false characteristics and behaviors of any breed, especially the ones targeted by the media. Use your own brain. Don't just go by what they say. Experience them yourself and see if you still agree with those ignorant people.

The trainer in the first several posts said pit bulls do not have erect ears. That statement alone discredits you because a true pit is a terrier and it is NOT uncommon to have erect or semi erect ears. Pits should NOT have floppy ears like a lab. . Don't almost ALL terrier breeds have erect ears? Seems to me like most of you have borrowed knowledge and not first hand or learned knowledge of the breed and that is the biggest battle. ....Educating the ignorant people who claim to be experts so they spread the truth and not myths. Unfortunately most people value their ignorance for some reason and don't want to learn the truth. As a pit bull owner all I can do is teach by example and anyone who spends time around my dogs begin to understand the real American Pit Bull Terrier. Let's remember to spay and neuter the breed we love!!!!!!! Excessive breeding is a HUGE part of the decline of this great breed!!!

Good to hear a story about Pitbulls in a positive light. Just like Dobermans, pits have a bad rep because they have an aggressive owner. Dobermans used to have the same rep about turning on their master, etc. The dog doesn't become an a-hole unless the owner is one.

In reading this thread, I see many good points on both sides of this issue. No doubt this dog deserves a metal. She displayed the loyalty of dogs and why we love them. ALL breeds can turn, bite and even kill. So, if you own any dog, it is necessary to get professional advice on the breed and train it properly. Pit Bulls can be sweet, affectionate, loyal and very intellegent dogs. With the correct handling can provide a lifetime of faithful companionship. I have know several and they are adorable and I really like them. But I alway proceed with caution. I have a friend who raised her pit with a loving yet firm approach and the dog was wonderful. One day, out of the blue, a young man on a bicycle veered a little on to my friends yard to avoid a damaged sidewalk and the dog pulled it's chain out of the ground and took that man right off his bike. The dog would not disengage. The man ended up losing his leg. The dog was put down. Could another breed of dog have attacked the man on the bike? Absolutely!! The issue here is that the pit bull bite is different than other breeds. It has an extreemly strong jaw and the breed was developed for protection and fighting. You cannot undo genetics. IF a pit bull bites they can do serious damage or may even cause death. If you choose to own a pit bull, then know and understand your breed. Don't get defensive when people challenge their affection or loyalty. You say it is the owner not the breed? It is both.

Not to sound like a record of a pit owner, but my pit mix would not hurt anyone or anything. She has proven herself. We had a a family emergency and the cops were a my house house for the first 20 minutes they were there they didnt know a dog was there and when she came out she thought she had new friends to play with. I am pregnant at the present time and dont worry about her with the baby. I also know not to leave them unattended. the ignorance against pits is something that I feel very strongly about and it seems thay that society is coming around but still has a way to go. There are many positive stories out there about the breed.there was a stray that saved a mother and toddler from a hold up at knife point at a park. Helen Keller had a pit as a nanny dog. In my opinion pits get blamed for "the most bites" due to so many breeds making up "pits" there is Staffordshire terrier, American pit bull terriers, and of coarse if they are a pit mix they fall into the same category. Also there are breeds that get get mixed up with pits such as American bulldo, media is not going to correct to correct themselves if they make an error like that. Lastly tge pitbull popilation seems to be so large compared to other breeds increasing the chances of a bite. Any dog can bite or be aggressive its all how you raise them. They are just like children.

Nancy S, pit bulls were not bred for protection at all. They were bred for specificly dog fighting and human companion. The owners of the dog had to be able to pull it out of the ring and not get bit in the middle of fighting another dog so actually any dog that showed aggression to humans or handlers were culled and not bred or fought. So much ignorance. Your friend was not a good pit owner because NO dog especially an active terrier should be chained. That's not love. 90% of all pit bull related bites and maulings were chained dogs. Check out the website on mothers against chained dogs because I can guarantee most aggressive dogs are not exercised properly and chaining or kenneling WILL create aggression in ANY breed. Ask the chained cocker spaniel that killed the 13 month old!!

I agree. No one should put a dog on a chain or in an underground fence yard because the dog that is chained or has the collar to keep it in the underground fence is defenseless against other dogs that come on the property. They can not get away. You either fence in your yard or you walk your dog and keep it inside. Chaining a dog outside is cruel. How many times have we seen dogs wrapped around trees or their houses an unable to get to food or water or to get out of inclement weather, not to mention if an agressive dog came after it.

Proper training for any breed is very important to get the best out of your dog. Education and training your dog is so much fun. They are able to use their mind and body to do complicated things. When a dog gets the chance to engage in activities that stimulate the mind and body it makes them happy and relaxed. I love my dogs and can never live without them. They protect me and love me. I am a slave to them, I wake up at 5:00am everyday to make sure their day starts with fun and love. I have always had dogs in my life from when I was a baby. I just love dogs.

What a noble dog! Reminds me of the old movies and TV shows that celebrated "Man's Best Friend," such as Lassie, Old Yeller, Balto, and Homeward Bound. Obviously this breed can be problematic, due to the unfortunate way humans have recently been breeding and raising these animals to fight, and sometimes it is hard to predict whether an owner will get ferocious loyalty or another kind of ferocity. But in "Lilly," we see the essence of the true greatness of the canine character. Hope her owner will be okay, and learn of her companions heroic deed.

There are so many experts on everything. I've worked with dogs for many years. I've never been bitten by a pit bull. I have been bitten by small dogs. That's a pretty general statement. Most of the posts here are too general. I've seen lots of sweet pit bulls, and I've seen some that I don't like at all. It's not the "way they're raised", and it's not always genetics. They're DOGS! You cannot predict which one will bite and exactly when it will bite. Also, there's a huge difference between the bite wounds from a ShihTzu and a Pit. So many people want to compare dogs to people. Everybody wants to believe if you "SAVE" a dog from that terrible life, the dog will be so grateful that they will love you forever. I meet a lot of people in affluent neighborhoods who have adopted pitties. Apparently, it's a very "IN" thing to do. Their pollyanna attitude is a joke. If a person grew up in a terrible situation, there is no way to predict how certain events would affect the person as an adult. To anyone who would just take a pit from the streets because he looks sad, and believe he will love you forever because the rescuer tells you that he is "sweet", I got a bridge for sale. Maybe you could take a random gang member home and trust him with your life. These are DOGS! Some are good and some are not. Also, pits don't have LOCKJAW. Pits have strong jaws, as they were bred for that reason. Their jaws are functionally the same as other dogs.

As an animal lover I would never say one Breed is just bad. I think they can be raised to be mean or something can happen to a dog in its life to make it react badly. That is not limited to just pitbulls. I love Chihuahua's but if they were bigger they would probably outlaw them because they want to eat most strangers up unless they are extremely socialized. Dogs have to be socialized and treated well to be a good dog. I have only had small dogs. My chih/terr mix was the best dog anyone could ever want, she passed in December and my mini dasch/chih is such a loyal and smart and wonderful dog. Most daschunds are agressive but she is shy and loving and because all she has ever known is love and kindness and is well socialized she loves everyone. She would run before ever biting anyone. It's all in how you raise a dog.

It's always interesting to read these threads and to see how very passionate people are about their dogs. As one poster put it, no one is mentioning the heroics of the 'human' that had the foresight to follow this dog. Both should be honored! In as far as viciousness, most of the comments are a bit racist (yes, I know thugs use pits for their nonsense), but come on.... when I was a kid 50 years ago, it was the German Shepherd. Then it was the doberman pinscher. Honestly, I have a dog, I was married to a veterinarian, and I've been around just about every and any kind of dog you can think of. I'm sure it's been said here (I can't BELIEVE how many comments this very small, very touching article has insighted), but a dog is a direct reflection of its owner. I refuse to believe that ANY dog that's given love, training, a good home, and a sense of family, they can be a good dog - along with the exact opposite. I have a border collie and I'm blown away by how many are afraid of her. She's lovable but I have to realize that some people are afraid of ALL dogs and that there are probably some collies out there that are vicious too. That being said, I do not trust a pit bull but respect and admire those responsible owners that are willing to take the chance and give this dog love. Stop hating so much, everyone! It's a good story :-)

When it all comes down to it, the only people who bash pits or other bully breeds are the ones who have NEVER owned one..they are just going by so called statistics, hear say and the media. Just like this article. Everyone clicked on it cause it was a story about a pitbull..some because we are owners and have love and respect for the breed, other's because they are avid animal lovers of all types and breeds. Then we have the ones that just want to bash the breed because they have no first hand experience, like OWNING one. They have their minds made up and we can allow them to be ignorant. Either way, the word PITBULL gets all types of attenttion..All in all, if you never owned one, or for the ones who work in shelters and have first hand experience. then you really don't know...so you can have your second hand knowledge, but that is far from having the right knowledge!! don't hate on what you don't know..if you don't or have never owned one, then with all do resepect-YOU DON'T KNOW! I am willing to bet that at least 60% of these so called pit bull attacks are not actually pitbulls at all, or are mixed. Unless their are papers or DNA, then the rest is speculation and I KNOW first hand about that. Alot of mixed dogs do look like pits, but are not! So people ASSUME things..I have a non pit who everyone swears is a pit..and i have a pit that no one beleives is a pit because she is nice and playful..ironic, isn't it?

I agree that pits are awsome and loyal dogs. They get such a bad rap because of the media and the fact that they are used so frequently for fighting. People need to realize that any dog will be likely to be vicious if that is how they are trained and if that is all that they know. The fact that there are some vicious pits out there shouldn't reflect badly on the breed, but it should reflect badly on the jackass humans who trained them to be that way.

The difference is that with a pit, they have a particular intelligence you don't find in just any dog. If you notice, their eyes almost look human. Mind you, i'm not some sort of nut or anything, just saying you can tell alot from the look in their eyes

I love all animals! I have a 19 1/2 year old cat. I love her to death.
AS for the for the pit bulls I admit I do get scared of them sometimes due to the scary stories you hear. Years ago I was walking down the street and saw this punk with a puppy pit bull and he was holding him in the air by his ears. I said something to him and of course he starting swearing and yelling at me telling me to mind my own business. I felt so much sympathy for that poor puppy crying so loud. In my eyes it's the people who make them like that. Shame on all of you! And you know who you are!!!

Rose you are so right it's stupid people like that causing "animals" to be so mean. Not just pitts any animal. I have had my girl since she was 6 wks old and have not had a problem. She is very protective and loving. The key is continuous training and good socialization with any breed. Perfect example. Yesterday my 3 year old step daughter fell on Kiwi while laying and enjoying her bone. She got up and looked at me like why she do that and took her bone and moved. I read a lot of these post and it makes me sick how people talk so bad about the breed. When in fact any breed can have the ability to snap. I had also read the fact people don't pay attention to animals body language. This is so true. Animals don't just snap they give warnings people don't pay attention. And so many talk about this and that so many need to get facts straight about a breed first. I am a animal lover not just any breed or kind.

Can we be clear that the 'locking jaw' is a myth. It's part of a hype that's been produced about the dog. I am glad to see a good story about a pitbull type dog instead of the usual. To those that continue to insist that they're vicious, you're mistaken. They are based on a terrier breeding, and for those that don't know dogs, the word is 'tenacious', sounds a lot like vicious, doesn't it? To own a pitbull type dog, you need to put it work and socialize them. Any dog can be aggressive. Also, people so frequently mistake a run of the mill mutt for a 'pit bull' that you can't count on that title. Glad that this story has a happy ending.

I have worked as a dog foster home for 35 yrs, for 3 rescue agencies. I remember a pit bull that I fostered: "Toad", a big, clumbsy, goofy guy! He "volunteered to help" when I fostered a litter of 3 day old kittens. He kept them clean and warm, and as they grew, he played with them and protected them. He became their "Uncle". And once, after a windstorm, he gently brought me baby birds he found in the grass. He placed the baby birds in my lap, totally unharmed. He did the same thing with a baby squirrell. What a wonderful dog! A pit bull.

I too love pitbulls, I had a 14 year old female (she was my 4th pitbull) that had been tossed out of a car when she was 10 weeks old, she grew up with other dogs, kids, cats and even helped out when we would foster new born kittens. She would help keep them clean and warm while they would get fed. Well a few months ago she started acting different, barking at us her family or growling when you walked into the room she was in. She then started to attack the other dogs, took her to the vet to see whats going on this behavior is just not like her. She had canine demetia, it seems to have happened very fast, some days were better than others, so my daughter and I took her out and gave her a great day, driving around with her head hanging out the window, eating fast food (plain hamberger) played ball in a park that she had all to herself, then held her paw while she crossed the rainbow bridge on Saturday April 7, 2012. As a dog owner I take extra care to make sure any of my dogs are never put in a postion that they feel they need to bite, they are never left alone with people they do not know, they are never left alone in my fenced back yard, they are never ever let out our front door with out a leash on, they are never left alone with other peoples pets. I know that dogs (all dogs) can bite or attack for many many reasons, so I take the extra care to make sure my dogs are safe. I currently have a German Shepherd Dog, a Boxer Mix and a Great Dane/Rotti mix.

I own two beautiful pit bulls and got them through an experienced breeder who shows the dogs in shows across the country. From the very beginning we have socialized our dogs at public events, dog parks and had them around children of all ages. Now both of our dogs are certified therapy dogs. We visit nursing homes, hospitals including children's hospital. The dogs lay on the beds if the patients want them to and just cuddle. Not only do the patients perk up when they see the dogs, the dogs themselves have changed many people's mind about the breed. Sadly many of these dogs have been inbred which has drastic results with their temperament. As with any dog you must socialize, socialize, socialize. You don't adopt or purchase a dog to only leave it in the house all day or chained outside. They are pack animals and need companionship and exercise. Lack of exercise can also cause aggression because the dog becomes bored. Also, good dog owners never leave a child alone with a dog no matter what the breed. In fact it wasn't long ago that a Siberian Husky killed a three week old baby because the parents trusted the dog and left the room. We also need to remember that like humans who are born with mental challenges, so are some animals. If you're going to become a dog owner research the breed you are interested in, then make sure you have the time and attention the breed requires.

ANN HERMAN- you stated in all caps that pits do have to unlock their joints to release a bite. This is a classic example of ignorance at its best. Pit bulls have zero genetic difference then any other canine. No breed of dogs have the abiility to lock a bite. Some due to breed and strength can bite stronger and hold longer but pit bull is not even in the top 5 strongest bites of domestic dogs. Please do research before spreading ignorant lies!!

AMEN to Cynthia. A poorly inbred dog of any breed will produce an unbalanced dog. Pit bulls are bred in mass quantities everywhere over ALL other dog breeds and most by back yard breeders with no reguard to the temperament and health of the dogs. It's is the most damaging reason why this breed has a bad rap. We need to educate people and promote spaying and neutering. It's not so much gangs and dog fighters when 90% of pit owners are trying to make the good ol mighty dollar by breeding and in breeding for looks with no reguard to the temperament of a dog. Everyone I meet that has this breed is breeding. It's sad that this breed can't catch a break. It's not so much gangs but the average person getting a pit because it's a fad then keeping it as a lawn ornament to only breed for profit. Ignorance is rampid in EVERYONE about this breed!

Lindsey smith, I am an owner and an advocate for this breed please do not judge a breed and it's owner. I'm a firm believer in education an positivity. You have to understand that when a breed you love and know is a great breed but is slammed by people who only know what they hear and not the truth it's tiring and gets irritating. I don't agree with the poor way people handle themselves but I know why they get so upset. If everyone would stay more positive for the breed and present themselves better it would send a better message. Please don't judge nor be as ignorant as some of the hateful remarks on here from pit bull lovers and non pit bull lovers. it gets no where. Judging is just as bad as someone using cuss words and calling names. None of it helps anyone.

So many of you people are mind-less ignorant POS that OBVIOUSLY are NOT educated, EDUCATE yourselves; you sound like a f*cking moron!!! Let me tell you a little about Pit Bulls. I had one and her name is Hershey, & she was the sweetest Pittie you would ever meet. Now for the facts: A dog does not become aggressive on it own, it is the OWNER. (You teach a dog to sit, it will sit) On the American Temperament Test the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier ranked a 93.2 and an 84.1, which is higher then a English Setter (73.7), Pomeranian (75.0), Weimaraner (79.7), a Yorkshire Terrier (80.0), and a Daschund (66.7). Out of 839 Pit Bulls 728 of them passes the ATT with flying colors, as for the others that did not pass it is likely from that way they are treated and or raised. The ATTS rates a Pit Bull to be a very stable dog, and is one of the TOP 5 DOG TO OWN!!! Pit Bulls were originally breed to be the nanny dog, to protect children, and 'baby sit' them. Those whom think they have a lock jaw: WRONG AGAIN, there is no such thing a LOCK JAW, it is the same as your stupid Chihuahua just awesomely bigger. Yo think banning Pit Bulls will help solve the "Pit Bull" issue, NO-- It is the owner, people who want to miss-treat their dogs will just move on to another breed-- Then that breed will be found dangerous too huh?

I have a pitbull rescued from the Booklyn streets last year. Lucy is the funniest, goofiest, most loving dog I have every had. EVERYONE who meets her falls in lover with her, even people who are afraid of pitbulls. Yet I constantly am told by friends who haven't met her that I had better be careful. Several even said I should return her. I've had her only 8 months, but I will give up those "friends" before I give my Lucy Goosey up!
She went through a bout of yeast infected ears and suffered through my cleaning them twice daily for weeks. It sometimes hurt quite badly and even if she cried, she NEVER tried to bite me. I will only have pit bulls from now on because I value the breed's great qualities very much.
Pits are loyal, loving dogs, every one I have known was sweet and kind, especially with children. Pit Bulls were known as the nanny dog during the late 1800's and early 1900's because they were so good with children.
So for all the ignorant vicious people who commented without a shred of real knowledge on the breed, I respectfully ask that you shut the hell up.

He is more affectionate and loyal than my Beagle! Yes, I have a beagle and a Pit Bull and believe it or not they get along!! The hate towards the Pit Bull breed is no different than racial profiling. These people are misjudging an entire breed of animal rather than take the time to get to know just one. It is shocking to hear how hateful some people can be towards an animal that they know nothing about. But guess what, that's alright, because the true Pit Bull lovers and advocates will keep on loving our BEAUTIFUL dogs and you can go on loving your perfect dogs who never, ever, ever do anything wrong.

About Pitbulls Jaws Locking.

The jaws don't locked. The muscle that runs from the mandible to the top of the head is larger than most which is why their heads are larger and somewhat square. The Rottweiler, Cane Corso are two other examples.

National Geographic conducted a comparative PSI test (pressure per square inch) with a Pitbull, German Shepherd and Rottweiler. The pitbull had the "lowest" PSI of the three. The Pitbull had a 235 PSI ... The German Shepherd had a 238 PSI and the Rottweiler had the highest PSI at 328. The PSI test on the Rott was the highest on record for any domestic canine. Again, the statistics are from National Geographic.

If you raise any dog to bite, it will. This is the 2nd story of a pit saving its owner in 2 days. I want to know how many of the people that say "pitts are bad" have actually owned one? Or have seen them attack for no apparent reason with their own eyes? Pitts are amazing and as are other breeds of dogs. But, when you have so many people bashing one breed so rediculously, is just crazy. How would you like it if the whole world bashed you? Take a hike!! have one, raise one, love one, take care of one, if you consider yourself a nice person then that dog SHOULD turn out to be just the same. All dogs want is to be loved and to have a family that will take care of them. If you're loyal to them they will be loyal to you! Pitt's look viscious and mean and yes like every other dog they have bad breath sometimes but they are the most remarkable breed. My pitt's are my world and they are so friendly and loving and beautiful! Funny how all the comments about how "vicious" pit bulls are come from people who have never owned a pit bull, don't work in the veterinary or shelter community, have never volunteered at a shelter, and have probably never even interacted with a pit bull.
Having been a veterinary technician for 8 years, pit bulls were one of the easier breeds to work on. The main issue with them (even when they had less-than-perfect owners) was that they could be wiggly and too affectionate while you were trying to work on them. The worst breeds....dachshunds, pekes, chihuahuas....the only big breeds I really worried about were rottweilers and chows. Not necessarily because they were more aggressive than other breeds, but because they tend not to give as much warning if they are getting stressed and are about to bite.
Pit bulls don't have "locking jaws" and they aren't responsible for any more bites than most other breeds in this country. The reason statistics may say otherwise is because bites by small dogs often go unreported, owners often don't report bites inflicted by their own dogs, and pit bulls are one of the breeds most often wrongly identified by victims. People hear over and over on tv about "vicious" pit bulls, get bitten by a dog, and just assume it is a pit bull. They don't hear stories like this and they don't know enough about dogs to tell the difference between a lab mix, a boxer, a cane corso, an american bulldog, and a pit bull.

Princess loves other dogs and cats I seen my BIG BAD PITBULL let a cat stick his head in her mouth to get a bite of canned food. so dont say things about a breed you dont even know the truth on first and formost DO RESURCH and find out the truth before just saying MYTHES are TRUE if thats is so then I really really want that dang pot of gold at the end of a rainbow or a flying horse and those dang little tree nymphs try this site for some hard cold facts about pitbulls http://www.pbrc.net/ and do some reading heck better yet give them a call and talk one on one then come back and tell the truth.

My dog will wags his tail in response to EVERYTHING. He is full of love and joy for EVERYONE. He does not bark when people come to the door, he wags his tail as he is pretty sure they are there to pet him. He wags his tail at people when they look at him when we are on a walk. Strange repair men enter the house that he has never met, and he tries to play with them or curl up on their laps. He is smart, goofy, so loving, and loves to sleep under blankets with his head on a pillow. I have had him for six years and he is the best thing that has ever happened to me. For those of you using the breeding argument, pit bulls who show(ed) aggression to humans are killed so there goes your theory that they are bred to kill people. (!?) They were not bred to kill people. They do not have locking jaws. (!?) Mark Twain owned a pit bull. So did the little rascals. They were once called nanny dogs and used to care for young children. Any animal has the potential to attack another animal or human. But there is no genetic marker for aggression. (That is a scientific fact.) Responsible pet owners who socialize their dogs and keep them well walked and well fed and well loved make for great dogs. For those of you breeding pit bulls, please stop. Enough of them die needlessly in shelters every day. For those of you who support breed bans like the one in Denver, keep in mind that I can live there (in Denver) with an arsenal of weapons, but not with my best friend, my dog.

People kill more people than pit bulls. Guns kill more people than pit bulls. Cars kill more people than pit bulls. Alcohol kills more people than pit bulls. Eating disorders kill more people than pit bulls. Obesity kills more people than pit bulls. Many types of dogs bite and kill and maim other dogs, and sadly sometimes people. That is the unfortunate nature of life and death. Millions of pit bulls across the country are making millions of people happy right now. Many pit bulls are Heros. Many are service animals. Go out and meet one. Better yet, go out and adopt one. I dare you. I hope the person in this story heals okay. And if you haven't already, I hope you meet a pit bull that changes your mind and heart forever. I did.

Actually it was a person high on bath salts attacking a homeless man. They did shoot the attacker when he growled at police. Which is great, they shoot animals everytime they protect themselves biting, so that person wanted to attack like a rabid animal, they should be shot.

I do not agree that animals are killed either for biting, unless rabies needs to be confirmed more with wildlife. If me or my kids were ever bitten by a dog I would not expect it killed.

1.) Since 1992, the breed most involved in fatal attacks has been the
Rottweiler, not the pit bull.

2.) Although there are no accurate or even near accurate census records
for dogs in the U.S., in some populations pit bulls are estimated to
comprise some 30-40% of the dog population, making it a very popular
breed. Considering that there were an estimated 53,000,000 dogs in the
U.S., and assuming that pit bulls make up 10% of that population, there
would be approximately 5.3 million pit bulls in our society. In 2000, 13 pit
bulls were involved in 8 fatal attacks. That is roughly ONE dog out of
204,000 - or .000385 percent of the pit bull population.

3.) Over the 37-year period from 1965-2001, pit bulls have been blamed
for an average of 2.48 human fatalities per year.

4.) About 40 people (children) per year die by drowning in 5-gallon water
pails. A person, during their lifetime, is 16 times more likely to drown in a
5-gallon water pail than to be killed by a pit bull.

5.) Approximately 50 children in the US are killed every year by their cribs
- 25 times the number of children and adults killed by pit bulls.

6.) Approximately 150 people are killed every year by falling coconuts.
Therefore, you are more than 60 TIMES MORE LIKELY to be killed by a
PALM TREE than a pit bull.

just shut up - its the mentally unstable people like you that give humans a bad rap

Sarah

7.) Each year, 350 people drown in their bathtubs. You are 151 times
more likely to be killed by your bathtub than you are by a pit bull.

8.) It is estimated that about 500 deaths per year are caused by aspirin.
You are more than 200 times more likely to die from taking aspirin than
from a pit bull attack.

9.) Every year, more than 2,000 children in the U.S. are killed by their
parents or guardians either through abuse or neglect. A child is more
than 800 times more likely to be killed by their adult caretaker than by a
pit bull.

10.) It is estimated that 5,000,000 dogs per year are killed in shelters.
Since in many places pit bulls make up 30-50% of the shelter population,
and are less likely to be considered for placement than any other breed,
guessing that 25% of those dogs killed is a reasonable estimate.
Therefore, it can be assumed that perhaps 1.25 million pit bulls are killed
per year.

Therefore - it is at least a HALF MILLION TIMES MORE LIKELY that a pit
bull will be killed by a HUMAN than the other way around.

11.) For every pit bull who kills, there are hundreds of thousands that
DON'T.

ok people b4 making sick comments such as all pitties should be put down or that they are they are the leading breed in dog attacks or that their jaws lock do ur research!!! yes some pits are DOG aggressive but it is the owners responsibility to b aware of that and act accordingly. As for attacks on humans...this is negligence on the owners part not the dogs! Pits have since the beginning been bred to LOVE People. If u never have personally known or owned a pittie u may never realize the capacity for love and loyalty these dogs have and that's fine. but unless u have taken the time and energy to thoroughly research this breed, don't pass judgement on something u don't know about! and by research o don't mean looking at a couple if sites with all negative pit press where god knows the credentials and research the site owners have! GO PITTIES!!!!!!!

Oh and while I'm at it I'd like to throw out there that an Akita is one of the most dog aggressive dogs out there. Chows are just as bad...and the Neapolitan mastiff, you wanna talk about what dogs are 'bred' to do?? Those dogs were designed SIMPLY and purely to KILL HUMANS!! The gladiators had to take on these dogs and they are still known to snap and kill owners. Also, a study just released showed the most aggressive dogs are chihuahuas, jack russels and dashounds. They just don't get reported as often as large dogs. Don't believe me?? Here's the link
http://www.dogguide.net/blog/2008/07/the-3-most-aggressive-dog-breeds-revealed-pit-bulls-rottweilers-youll-be-surprised/
Oh and to all of you hoping my dog will maul my kids so I 'learn my lesson' or whatever. I'm not stupid enough to leave my child alone w ANY dog. And you shouldn't be either...my gingerbread wouldn't hurt a soul...and even though she won't fight, I sure as HELL will!!!!

UGGGHHH!!! So you ppl are getting all your 'facts' from the same resource that's telling us "Obama is an amazing leader! Look at all he's done for us!" seriously?? Pet a pit bull...and then tell me you feel the same. As one man mentioned, 30 years ago it was the dobie. And before that the sheppard, now these dogs are looked at as great family dogs. Is every pit bull good?? No, of course not. But neither is every lab or husky. A pit isn't for everyone. It's usually the ppl who get one just so they can claim to have one that cause the problems. They need a calm and assertive master to teach them right from wrong...

Why have you people turned a wonderful story about the tremendous loyalty and devotion of a dog into a war over what breed is most agressive and vicious? This partiular dog may have saved it's owner's life and this article should be about praise and glory, no matter what kind of dog it is. The breed is irrelevant for this story!

To everybody who says pit bulls are vicious dogs, it,s not the breed of dog that makes it mean, it's how the owner has TRAINED it. I have a 9month old pit bull puppy that was raised to be a fighting dog but because HE REFUSED TO FIGHT just a scant 2 months ago the former owner told the woman who helped rescue him that if he took him home it was to a bullet. And because of the sores on his head from the jackass former owner trying to fight him it was an instant death sentence at a shelter. This puppy has never been raised around kids and yet his best friend is my 3 year old son. My son can stick his hand in our dog's food dish WHILE HE'S EATING and our dog will either keep eating or eat out of my son's hand or lick my son then continue eating. Our pit will throw a front leg around any of my kids shoulders if the happen to be crouched down beside him. So you see a dog breed with a bad rep doesn't need to be judged by that. Instead of judging a breed try judging the dumb ass owners who trained them that way. It not only goes for one breed its for all breeds.

They are sweetand loyal caring animals. Mine is the same way with the food dish. If I am sitting on the floor she will get on the couch and wrap her paws around my neck as if shes giving hugs. It so cute. Funny how proper training to ANY breed causes the animal to be a great friend. Theres no reason this great story needed to be wrecked with all these crazy comments.

I agree with "no name". I have been concerned for Dona and Lily which is what the story was about in the first place. It was hijacked by pitbull owners.

I am praying that the outcome will be ok for Dona and Lily and the ones taking care of Lily. Thanks to Amanda and Debbie for informing us on their welfare.

I am an animal lover too but its a shame that most of the ones posting did not once mention or ask how the principles in the story were doing.

And welfare dogs?? Wow...FYI if you wanna raise a dog healthy you can't do that on welfare. I have a bachelors degree and have never in my life collected ANY government assistance. All dogs have the potential to attack. I have had dogs from a chihuahua to pit bulls to st bernards try to attack me! I still love my dogs and if you own a dog regardless of breed you have to learn and manage the dogs "trigger". My pit does not like anyone to wear hats- I tell people to remove their hat before entering. Its not difficult to maintain control of your pets. It's harder to have control of your children than your dog!

WOW after reading a lot of these comments I am speechless!! Some of you are so ignorant it is unreal!! All pit bulls should be killed?? What about all the bad people in the world? I think they should be killed but unfortunately they are not...I have heard of more dog bites from dogs that were NOT pit bulls. My friend got attacked by a Labrador a couple weeks back. My mom was bit by a collie. I was bitten by several small dogs in my life and NEVER once bit by my pit bulls. So before you open your mouths and say how terrible pit bulls are I think you need to think. Pit bulls receive higher ratings on temperament tests than most of your family dogs so take a look at your dogs before you bash others.

k0 sue, and all the others...have you ever thought about the FACT that people LIE??? if someone's pit (or ANY other medium or large breed dog) bit someone, do you think the owner is going to come right out and confess that their dog was untrustworthy or had bitten/shown human aggression before? do you have a job? you know, where there are co-workers? ever noticed that people aren't exactly honest?
i had a pit. in public, some people would ask if she bit before they'd pet her. i always laughed. 'cause she didn't. that was TRUTH, 'cause i was 100% confident that if someone put their hand down to pet her, they'd count 5 fingers when they were done.

Wow I'm still blown away at some of these comments. Pit bulls fight to the death. Their jaws lock. They attack children and people all the time. Seriously? What's next, they're inherently evil? They don't fight to the death, if they have been provoked in some way its like any other dog. What makes them a bit more dangerous is the muscle that labs don't have. They're jaws don't lock. They have huge jaw muscles that make they're jaws superior to others. And the media loves to point fingers at pitties because god forbid lassie bites someone. Owners should be blamed for bad behavior. If your one year old gets bit or stepped on, maybe you should have stayed in the room. If you treat your pittie as protection, a loaded gun tied to the tree all day and night, don't be surprised when they get out and attack people and other dogs: you haven't given them social skills. If your pittie has been abused in the past, make sure you assess and understand any lasting psychological scars before letting them do what ever they want. Pit bulls are great loyal intelligent dogs but they're like people. You treat children wrong, provoke them, raise them wrong, guess what? They're the ones who end up in jail. So should we kill every animal that has the potential to hurt someone? That's a very long list and I'm pretty sure were on in.

This is such a beautiful story about the loyalty of dogs, not just Pitties. although about some of the comments, it's sad when people are so closed minded and place judgment on a breed of dogs as a whole. That's like stereotyping a breed of people as a whole, or a grocery store chain as a whole.... or say that ALL people who have Russian heritage like vodka, or all babies born at 3:15AM will have green eyes. There are quite a few Pit bulls out there and to say they are all aggressive and prone to attack is slightly absurd. I will say this there seems to be a trend of the more seedy side of society believing that a pit will bring you status or that they are "cool" to own. And because this breeds of dog...like someone above said is bred with "gameness", it tends to run with the pack that feeds it. So if someone who isn't a responsible dog owner, has one then who know what could happen.
I own a APBT. She is 2 and i found her on the streets. She is a great, sweet, loyal, and confident dog, I treat her with respect and give her what she needs (good food, lots of exercise, safe home). I know in comparison to most other breeds she could do a lot of damage with her strength and focus if she really wanted to, but it's not in her mind set to be aggressive at all. I know more little dog mixes that growl, yip and snap than I know of Pits that throw their weight around.
Again this story is awesome.
