Shelley Adler, Widow of Late John Adler, To Seek 3rd District Congressional Seat

Adler would run against Jon Runyan in newly redrawn 3rd District

Shelley Adler, widow of former Democratic U.S. Rep. John Adler, announced today that she will run against Republican incumbent Jon Runyan for New Jersey's 3rd District Congressional seat.

“For several months, I weighed running for the seat formerly held by my late husband to continue his legacy of public service," said Adler in a statement run in several news outlets across the state. "When I speak to people, they share their struggles with me and are frustrated by politicians playing games in Washington. They want a new direction.

“In Congress, I will fight to create new jobs and to restore accountability by rooting out wasteful spending. I will also push for tax incentives to help small businesses create jobs in new industries, to improve benefits for our veterans, and to preserve benefits for our seniors.”

PolitickerNJ broke the story Sunday evening, reporting that Adler would announce her bid today. The online political news site points out that if elected, Adler would be only the sixth woman elected to Congress in New Jersey and the first to represent a South Jersey district.

John Adler served a single term as U.S. Representative for the 3rd District, which then included parts Camden County in addition to Burlington and Ocean counties, before losing the seat to Runyan in 2010. Adler died of complications from bacterial infection following heart surgery last April.

“I welcome Mrs. Adler into the race,” said Rep. Runyan in an emailed statement today. “If she is ultimately the Democratic nominee, I look forward to a spirited campaign on the issues that matter to the residents of Burlington and Ocean counties."

Runyan said he'd continue to focus on "President Obama's failed big-government agenda," job creation, strengthening Medicare and supporting veterans.

A Runyan consultant pointed out in the news release that Shelley Adler doesn't currently live in the newly reconfigured third district, which saw her Camden County town of Cherry Hill sliced off in the redistricting shuffle of last year.

"After the Carl Lewis fiasco and the public backlash towards him, you would think candidates would be more wary of seeking elected office in a district that they don't actually live in," said Chris Russell, referring to Lewis' ultimate withdrawal of his name from a New Jersey State Senate ballot following a controversy over his place of residence.

A Record of Bergen County story on Adler's announcement notes that candidates in federal elections don't have to live in the district where they're running. The PolitickerNJ story claimed "a source said she plans to move into the district by the end of the year."

According to The Record, Adler will have "an uphill battle against Runyan" if she wins the Democratic nomination, because the 3rd District, already right-leaning, became even safer for Republicans after 2010's redistricting after losing Cherry Hill and gaining Brick.

What makes Mrs. Adler anymore qualified than Jon Ruyan to be out Congressman? Just because her husband was a member of Congress makes her qualified? Is she looking for the sympathy vote? I feel for her that she lost he husband to a heart aliment but, that doesn't mean that I want her as a member of Congress.

Runyan was qualified? A football has-been who never held office before, and in his 1st term voted to kill Medicare, and now wants to "phone in" meetings with the people he supposedly represents... versus someone who probably got more insight into govt. from her late husband than Runyon will ever have.

Where in the Constitution does it state that members of congress are required to have held a previous elected position OR have a degree in law? If you knew anything about our nation’s history, you would realize that people from all walks of life are expected and encouraged to serve in congress. Our founding fathers NEVER envisioned people making a 40+ year career out of it like John Dingell, John Conyers, & Charlie Rangel. The democratic party is an utter and complete failure so their M.O. in 2012 is to run on the over-used mantra "my opponent is a racist/sexist/homophobe/Nazi who hates the elderly and disabled" now coupled with the grieving widow angle. How pathetic.

And what qualified Mary Bono to fill the position of her late husband? Not only did she finish out Sonny's term but has been reelected to six more terms.
There have been over 50 women, past and current, who succeeded their husbands in Congress. Some did very well, some didn't.
I mentioned Mary Bono because she is probably the best known of the current such members of Congress.

Remember our US Senator Bill Bradley? He went directly from the NBA to the US Senate and served there for 18 years.
In addition to Runyan four other former NFL players have gone on to serve in Congress, including Jack Kemp.

George,
The vote that you are talking about was NOT TO END MEDICARE it was to give seniors who ARE UNDER THE AGE OF 56 (currently) a voucher to purchase their own insurance. And your response that Runyan wants to hold "phone in" meetings well, I don't know about you but, I have received at the very least three of those phone calls and I was also able to ask a question in all but 1( and no I am not a Republican). I agree that Jon Runyan had no political experience before he was duly elected buy the voters of the 3rd Congressional District. Just because Mrs. Adler had been around politics either in the State or Federal levels because of her husband does not make her qualified either. People need to wake up and see that there needs to be a change not only in the House but also in the Senate. We also need to take a look at what all of these "entitlements" are costing ALL of us. Those who are paying into the system now and those who will be paying into the system in the future, we have to look at what it is going to cost ALL of our children and grandchildren. We need to look at what is the best for the WHOLE Country and or State and not what is the best for "ME". The people who have made a lifetime career being in either Washington or Trenton need to be shown that the residents and the taxpayers are done with their business as usual attitude is not going to be tolerated anymore!

I must say first it must be hard for Mrs. Adler to try and run for her husbands seat. The death of a spouse or a loved one is devestating. She may want to continue a "legacy", however she has no Chance against Jon Runyan. He is being a very strong Congressman.

Wake up - Runyan's a mouthpiece for the "machine" and this Adler woman will be a mouthpiece for the dems and the marxist in our Oval Office. Yes, they're going for the sympathy vote.

The legacy was not one that this district needs to carry on. John was a great guy but way to Liberal for this district. After trying out his promise to be reasonable he failed whan it came to actually performing. That is why we voted him out! What we need is more movement to the constitution and its intent not to a liberal attempt to support things that are proven to have hurt our society.

Remember that Bill & Hill bought a house in Chappaqua, New York a few months before Bill left office so Hill could run for Senator from NY.
Robert Kennedy used one of the many family residences so he could run for Senator from NY.
Perhaps I could run for the House seat vacanted by Gabrielle Giffords, even though I don't live in Arizona's congressional district.

Not every DEM is a socialist. Your party was highjacked by Marxist extremists. Across America the DEMS are losing members in droves. They are clearly stating, "I didn't leave the party, the party left me." You are too young to remember therefore you are also unable to formulate an unbiased opinion of your own party. Mrs. Adler is certainly free to fun for the US House..IN HER OWN DISTRICT! This Chicago-style of politics employed by the DEMS is indeed "socialist". Socialism is a fairytale in which the individual surrenders all of his or her rights and property to the centralized state. Problem is, every time someone attempts a socialist government it fails. Millions die, millions more starve, and everyone suffers.

Runyan is an inexperienced former football player with deep pockets. For that reason and that reason alone he was considered an “electable” candidate and groomed for the opportunity. And he is no Bill Bradley. Former Senator Bill Bradley was well-versed and prepared when he sought office. If Runyan had prepared himself for office prior to running; thinking that his connections and money would be sufficient, I might have credited him with the respect that our representative deserves.

In his past debate, his response with the Dred Scott decision was inexcusable. On entering political life a man should not only consider the honorable nature of the work, but also his ability to perform in its tasks. "In a word, whatever we undertake, the most thorough preparation is necessary." Any individual, who is eager to represent us, should recognize the enormous significance of their decisions and impact on our lives.

Having met Congressman Runyan on several occasions, I have no reason to believe that he will not try to learn about what matters to his constituents here in Brick Township. In that I agree with Portia that the scope and gravity of the mistreatment of animals must be addressed on all levels, I reached out to Congressman Runyan for his show of support and input. Federal laws need to be reviewed and revisited as they relate to trade and commerce relative to the breeding and distribution of sick animals. This issue raises many red flags and speaks to our Nation's core values, tradiitons, and family values. Again, let's give Congressman Runyan a chance to weigh in on the subject. If he provide us with insight on a Federal level, maybe he can propose new solutions to this despicable age old problem.

Also am told that our 10th District Legislators have been in contact with OLS regarding increasing penalty assessments and other animal-friendly legislation.

Having reviewed the audit report generated by the US Department of Agriculture relative to inspections of problematic dealers, I can only tell you that further review and study of sound policy needs to be initiated.

And on another insignificant note, it would be my understanding that your visits to the Rayburn building were in reference to work done with Congressman Smith's staff, correct?

John,
Have you ever heard of the Edenton Tea Party?

The Edenton Tea Party was one of the earliest organized women’s political actions in United States history. On October 25, 1774, Mrs. Penelope Barker organized, at the home of Mrs. Elizabeth King, fifty-one women in Edenton, North Carolina. Together they formed an alliance wholeheartedly supporting the American cause against “taxation without representation.”

In response to the Tea Act of 1773, the Provincial Deputies of North Carolina resolved to boycott all British tea and cloth received after September 10, 1774. The women of Edenton signed an agreement saying they were “determined to give memorable proof of their patriotism” and could not be “indifferent on any occasion that appears nearly to affect the peace and happiness of our country . . . it is a duty that we owe, not only to our near and dear connections . . . but to ourselves.'

Our current problem is we need to go to the left, but we ended up with a socialist as a president, who took a radical hard left turn and has sent the country on a downward spiral. actually rick fox first reported that it was a cessna that had hit the trade center . they were a little off. as for the 1774 tea party yes they fought until they got women the right to vote about 130 yrs later. the difference between these clowns in the wal mart parking lot yelling and wearing ben franklin costumes is the original tea party dumping tea would have been a felony in those days and could have been punished by death. the blue haired women holding up "keep your govt hands off my medicare"(who did they think ran medicare?) are merely annoying. the tim o connor research institute doesnt teach students anything before jan 20 2009. a shame because they are missing lessons on bush who under his confused watch we got 9/11 , katrina, 2 wars , a starbucks in bagdad finally, a 2007 recession and 700,000 jobs a month being lost when he left office with a 19% approval rating. @john smith isnt it funny that out of the many people who see right thru o connor and the many others using nicknames on here he wants to know your name? why doesnt he ask everyone why they dont use their real names? . the last thing you need john smith is the nuts in town knowing your real name .

And you know that Fox reported it was a Cessna how?
You were watching Fox News?
In the first few minutes after the first plane hit there was a lot of confusion about what happened.
I was just getting to work that day and the Phillie station I was listening to reported that they were getting a report that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center towers, with no other details.

This was almost 20 minutes after the first plane hit.

and rick they would be spinning in their graves if they knew that their names were being used by tea party types who vote in the very people who are undermining this country. hypocrites that say they dont want big govt but are fine with having trans canada use eminent domain against nebraska farmers to get the keystone pipeline built. republicans who get in front of the cameras and condemn the last stimulus then go home and hand behind their backs take the check. those who told americans working in detroit to drop dead and let gm fail. now its the top car seller in the world. the founding fathers wanted seperation of church and state and now we have gop debaters saying religion will control policy.long gone are those men of long ago like lincoln and jfk who saw a better future for america. in the 60s we were bursdting with invention and new ideas . we put men on the moon. today we have whiners who dont believe in solar energy or electric cars instead choosing to use the same energy we,ve been using since 1870. now all they give us is a corporate raider and mega millionaire and a guy who was thrown out on ethics charges and cheats on each wife if they get a case of the flu. its sad.

How come you think using eminent domain to build a pipe line in Nebraska is so abhorrent. I doubt you would think using eminent domain to build a state; US or Interstate highway was abhorrent.
The Founders said in the 1st Amendment "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
To date, the government has not banned any religion nor established a 'Church of America'.

HOWEVER, the US Park Police just pushed the "Occupy" people out of McPherson Park in Washington DC. Aren't the "Occupy" people peaceably assembling?

Do you think that GM, and Chrysler would have been in such financial straits if people didn't prefer foriegn cars?

You and our Exaulted Leader think that solar, wind and other alternative power sources are the way of the future.
I doubt that Air Force 1 would fly very far on any of those power sources. Wood, coal and water have been power sources for thousands of years and all of a sudden they are not acceptable?

"ask not what your country can do for you ask what you can do for your country" those words are like kryptonite to the tea party. instead of wanting this country to move forward into the 21 st century they whine about tax dollars being spent on new energy . meanwhile $4 billion a year of their tax dollars go to big oil subsidies.we used to have the brightest and the best now we have the tea party calling teachers and firemen thugs while the bankers who robbed american tax dollars to the tune of $8 trillion are to be protected.we let corporations vote as people while they pay less than half the tax rate everyone else does . the founding fathers would be very disappointed that the best we have done in 200 yrs is have a tea party and those like tim o connor who denounce big govt while he pushes for eminent domain in lacey. eminent domain is the worst kind of big govt.

Pete
"we let corporations vote as people"?
Really? Who casts the vote for Microsoft? Bill Gates? The janitor at their HQ building? A laptop?
Eminent Domain is the worst kind of big government?
It was established in the Constitution.
5 Amendment. "No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."
I'll repeat that last part, "nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."

You really need to study the history of the Revolutionary War Pete.
Most of the major battles were fought with both sides lined up in big open fields. Saratoga, Princeton, Monmouth, Long Island(Brooklyn), Brandy Wine, Cow Pens and Yorktown.

wow rick thanks for that newsflash most of us must have missed the superbowl last nite.you are clueless in understanding eminent domain.decades ago it was rightfully used to build the interstate highway system. but not ever for a pipeline. the koch brothers (the same billionaires who were supplying iran before they got caught) have an oil terminal at the beginning of the tar sands in canada and a terminal in texas where it ends . transcanada has already said this oil will be sold to the highest bidder in the global market . so most of this oil will be sold to china etc. it will do zip as far as lowering gas prices in the u.s . of course thats why the republicans just tried to introduce a bill that cuts the army corps of engineeers and the bureau of land management from inspecting the plans for it. good thing too since the existing keystone pipeline has leaked 14 times in the past year alone. those like rick are the cause of the worst things in this country because of their misguided selfishness

Bob, I think you need to read the history of the Alaska pipeline. Do you think they ran an 800 mile pipeline without having to displace some people?
How do you think the oil and gas pipelines and the high voltage electric lines that make up the US power grid got built.
On a smaller but more local scale, how do you think the fuel lines that supply airplane fuel to Kennedy and Laguardia airports go built?

Definition of 'incumbent'
"adjective
1. holding an indicated position, role, office, etc., currently: the incumbent officers of the club.
2. obligatory (often followed by on or upon ): a duty incumbent upon me.
3. Archaic . resting, lying, leaning, or pressing on something: incumbent upon the cool grass.
noun
4. the holder of an office: The incumbent was challenged by a fusion candidate.
5. British . a person who holds an ecclesiastical benefice. "

Opening sentence of the article
"Shelley Adler, widow of former Democratic U.S. Rep. John Adler, announced today that she will run against Republican incumbent Jon Runyan for New Jersey's 3rd District Congressional seat."

Tim O'Connor

You guys are a riot. Her husband was the Congressman, not her. Therefore she could never be an incumbent. However, she wants to act like the incumbent. Her call to fame is her husbands connections. She is trying to be a self proclaimed incumbent. Let's see the definition of that!

Ms Adler said she was running for the office that her late husband once held. She didn't say she wants to fill the seat left empty by his death.
She is aware that she will be running against the incumbent, Mr. Runyan.

rick instead of searching your websters for definitions or looking to the library of congress for things that are only proposed legislation instead of already existing try watching a senate hearing now and then. from this past friday the heads of blm and the army corps of engineers testified that the bill 3548 undermines all agencies who normally review projects like this.they are trying to push thru a bill in less than 30 days before anyone reviews it . the actual course of the pipeline hasnt even been confirmed yet. its in direct violation of the rivers and harbors act as well as the clean water act of 73. again this oil will be sold in foreign markets and brig gen steven anderson who spent many yrs in iraq said it will be a national security threat. it wont lower the price of gas one cent. most economists say it will raise prices since we will have to compete with china for that oil. and youre right john tim o connor holding up his giant photo with his forehead as his $3 easel was collapsing was funnier than most sitcoms.

Bob,
That must have been an interesting Senate hearing. That bill is HR 3548. That is a bill introduced in the House, but the Senate.
Why would the Senate be holding hearing on a House bill that is currently in the House Subcommittee on Energy and Power?

For your information the Library of Congress web site lists every bill introduced in either house. http://thomas.loc.gov
Try it.
You can find any bill introduced during the past 12 Congresses and their summary, status and text.

while rick is all consumed on which house this bill sits in every agency that has reviewed projects like this up until today are being cut out of the application process. funny how reps were for the bush executive order of 2004 which called for a complete review is now being ignored. the koch brothers fund most republicans so its easy to see who bought them this time.

I am not "all consumed" with which house this bill is in, YOU are the one who claims to be so well informed but didn't know that it was a House bill. Based on what you posted, if someone wanted to research the issue they would not be able to find it in Senate committee hearings or reports.

moral of the story is rick has no problem with a foreign corporation like trans canada taking the homes of americans using eminent domain so they can export oil overseas. same as tim o connor here who bashes quinn but is on the same page as quinn and the rest of the good ole boys who are spending millions to have eminent domain be used against lacey residents. years ago it was used to build the interstate highways now its used for a pipeline and a 1 mile shortcut to shoprite for o connor.

Unless, whoever is appointed to fill Ms Giffords' unfinished term runs for election this November.

In that case the candidate would be the actual incumbent.

Here ya go:
http://www.citizenlink.com/2012/03/22/u-s-house-votes-to-eliminate-obamacare-panel/ - 38k
The REPUBLICAN controlled House of Representatives voted to eliminate the board created to essentially DENY CARE TO MEDICARE PATIENTS. It will, however, face an uphill battle to get enough votes to repeal it in the DEMOCRATE controlled Senate. Of course the DEMOCRATE President will veto it if it does pass. So the "Extreme" Leftwing is responsible for the rationing of care that will result if the panel is allowed to exist (along with the entire Obamacare law). Vote Republican to increase chances of repealing the devastating Obamacare law. More to come.
