The 4th Annual Beating on the Beach high school fishing competition ended with Southern Regional High School defeating returning champs Barnegat High School, newcomer Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES), and Lacey Township High School.
The event was held at 9th street Barnegat Light on May 31 with teams rotating through sections of the beach every 45 minutes. The final score was Southern 31, MATES 19, Barnegat 0, and Lacey 0. With only 3 fish caught during the entire 3 1/2 hour event and 40 students fishing the event - it was definitely tough day on the surf. Southern capitalized on two 15 1/2 inch fluke, while MATES caught one 19 inch flounder. Southern Regional will retain the Competition trophy (donated by Village Harbor Fishing club) until next year's event.
The Barnegat Heaver officiated the event, Tony's Bait and Tackle supplied bait for Southern, and Fisherman's Headquarters supplied the bait for Barnegat HS and MATES academy. Southern's advisor Bob McMaster, Barnegat's advisor Brett Taylor, Lacey's advisor Terry Stuart, and MATES advisor Chris Woerner organizied the event. The trophy was presented to Southern Regional on Friday, June 8th at Village Harbor's Fishing Club's monthly meeting.
