The Morning Report: Indictment, Electricity Update And Open Space Poll Results

Good morning, Barnegat and Manahawkin! Today is Thursday, June 21.

Happy summer, everyone.

I am just back from New York City, where I have gone for corporate Patch training — and let me tell you, I had a blast and learned a lot about how to make the site work for you. I can't wait to implement all the new knowledge I have acquired.

Here in the area, you — and I, too  — sometimes forget how much bigger this thing is -- this grand exciting venture we're all a part of.

But as I'm back, let's get back to local business.

We are starting this morning off with some indictments news — a Barnegat resident and several Toms River residents were indicted for shoplifting at Manahawkin stores.

Then, it will time for me to take a look at that open space poll we've had running for eight days now. I tried my best to be even-handed in my approach when I asked you: is recreation or open space a more important priority to you? I will post an update on what you said shortly.

Finally, our contributor Steve Moran is going to follow up yesterday's coverage on outages in Manahawkin later on today. We want to make sure everything is back to normal, and let you know if it isn't.

Weather

The crazy heat will continue today, with temperatures expected in the low 90s, lots of sunshine, no rain. A trip to the beach, anyone?

Have a great day everyone. It's good to be back!

Now, I hope this doesn't turn into another circus, and a gadjilion comments on what an awful job we do. We get so many positive positive comments from readers, too -- those however come in private more often, unfortunately :) We aren't here to seek compliments, we just want to do our job and delight and inform you guys. Let's think of this as a partnership, not a battle. I want to be open with you guys, and I want to enjoy being your editor. There is so much to love about it! Please don't turn it into a torture :)

Katia, I had three posts removed and I do not feel I said anything libelous or inaccurate. Nor did I insult anyone personally. In fact, I thanked Tom Davis for acknowledging my original post. I am disappointed they were removed as I do not feel they violated any of the site’s policies.

I, like many readers, have come to rely upon the Patch for news and information, that is why I found Tuesday’s original article so disappointing. Everyone I have spoken to agrees a single paragraph saying the budget was passed at an emergency meeting would have been better than the original article. I’m disappointed by the content of the original article and most disheartened by the editorial staff's handling of my posts.

Okay, Cindy, point taken, that was just one day, one article, on a very overwhelming day when Patch was short-handed. Now that I'm back perhaps we can move beyond it :)

As for me, I've said this before, I want a true and correct story. I don't need or want a story to be longer then it needs to be. The edited story was way more correct then the original posting so I don't understand why that wasn't done first. Also, as far as the comments that I saw, none were wrong that were written by either Nancy or Cindy. One of our past Countries leaders once said, "if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen". Sounds like some of the people working on the Patch might want to get themselves fire suits if they write fluff stories, I think we all want you to spend as much time as needed on every story before you run off to produce some fresh content. Again, true and correct. Thanks.

Nancy, the reason I didn't respond is because I am so done talking about this. You're shocked? Stay shocked, then. I was not accusing you of a, or anyone else of a crime, but explaining why some comments were deleted and then the comments were closed. I thought I was being honest and open and responsive with you, but having seen your reaction to my explanations, I have a feeling nothing I say will satisfy you, so why bother? As far as that apology you keep demanding, I have nothing to apologize for, because I did nothing wrong. I want to focus on providing as good a service as I possibly can to those readers who have now moved beyond the story about Tuesday's budget, and are having some interesting discussions on the site about other issues. Don't worry, I have no interest in banning you, as you don't seem to be crossing any lines, just tirelessly re-hashing the same thing over and over. If you want to keep talking about this, go on, I suppose. But I am not going to be part of this conversation with you.

I cant believe I am actually reading this. Nancy do me a favor and quit wining. So what, someone made a mistake and apologized for it. I saw all the comments you were posting against that poor guy and let me say it made me embarrassed to say I was from Barnegat and living in the same town as some of you people.

Let me say this, This is their site not yours. They have every right to ban you, delete your comments, ignore you, not respond to you and put anything they want on their site. If they want to post a story about Aliens invading, than they can. If you dont like it, dont come to this site. I heard APP makes you pay a fee now to read their news, maybe you would have more of a say if you were paying money and not coming to an absolutely free site.

Katia, Mr Davis. I thank you for all of your hard work. And believe me if you make a mistake, I am sure I have made many more. The people in this town can be very difficult to deal with as many of them are aging and bitter. Please do not take it as a reflection on the entire community and keep up all of your hard work. I thoroughly enjoy this site and do not wish it to be diminished in any nature due to a few disgruntle readers. The town would be way worse off if we did not have you around to provide news. I, for one, will continue to read your news articles and enjoy them. Others are free to leave and go where they wish.

Thank you again.
