Weird Weather: 60s Today, Snow Sunday?

Unusually warm temperatures at the Shore "approaching record territory"

January? It's more like March today – stormy skies and all.

The Shore is seeing some unseasonably warm weather this week, which forecasters say is contributing to the chance of winter thunderstorms and high winds today. But don’t get too attached to the balmy breezes: Plunging temperatures and possible snow showers are in the works for the weekend.

Temperatures started rising last night, and are expected to hit the low- to mid-60s in Ocean and Monmouth counties today, according to the National Weather Service.

“We’re still kind of locked into a rather mild pattern that we’ve been in over most of the winter,” said Kristin Kline, a meteorologist with the NWS’s Mount Holly station. And the movement of pressure systems in the region has warmed things up even more, she said.

“We had a low-pressure system pass north of the area yesterday, which allowed a warm front to move through yesterday afternoon,” said Kline, “so it kind of feels a little like springtime.”

Also spring-like: the thunderstorms that could move over the area in the afternoon, the product of an unstable mix of warm and cool air in the atmosphere.

Chasing the stormy weather will be a significant cold front, Kline said, which will kick up gusty winds later this afternoon and into the evening. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we see those winds hitting 35 to 40 miles per hour,” she said.

The front will bring overnight temperatures in the low 30s going into Saturday, Kline said. After a mostly sunny weekend with daytime highs in the 40s and 50s, freezing conditions late Sunday could mean some of the expected precipitation that night could fall as snow in the Shore area.

But, she said, “it isn’t going to be anything that lasts.”

So how do our weirdly warm temperatures stack up historically?

“It’s mild enough that you’re approaching record territory,” Kline said. But not quite: the highest temperature recorded for Jan. 27 in Trenton was 68 degrees in 1974. The mercury hit 72 degrees in Atlantic City the same day. “That seems out of reach for today,” said Kline.

I have nothing against science. I just despise "junk" science. Did you actually read the article signed by the 16 scientists who changed their opion about AGW? Why does the green movement refuse to acknowledge the impact that polar shift and plate tectonics has on out climate? Now there's some REAL science for you.

shore skeptic when you read right wing papers like the wall st journal and ny post of course you are going to find only articles that say climate change isnt real. 16 scientists changed their minds but thousands have not. the koch brothers coal industry billionaires who spent $50 million last year on lobbyists who say it isnt real recently hired a top scientist to back up their claim. big shocker when he released a statement that it was real. the koch bros werent happy. and there has been only a very slight magnetic pole shift and plate tectonics have nothing to do with it. when you deforest vast amount of co2 absorbing trees and burn fossil fuel unchecked for over 100 years these things happen. i trust nasa and noaa and top scientists from places like harvard and oxford university when they say it may already be too late.a recent show on ch 13 on nova called "extreme ice' had photographers from 26 different artic regions set up time lapse video cameras over a 3 yr period. when they played them back at full speed it looked like the glaciers were doing 50 mph into the ocean. thats real science .when you listen to the weatherman listen to how many times they use the word "record", record heat, record flooding. over the 9 days at christmas the u.s broke 1095 heat records . yes people enjoy the mild winter but come summer it will be time to pay the piper.

Why must the left always revert to name-calling when confronted with a person who has opposing views? Oh yeah, because it's a page out of Karl Marx's "Communist Manifesto" (or was it Moore's "Utopia"). The simple fact is that plate tectonics cause a change in the ocean currents and in turn generates more heat. When these tectonic plates shift, the creation of the volcanic eruptions increases the degree of carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the atmosphere. This is what leads to a rise in the temperature levels globally. Plate tectonic movement and change in climate go hand in hand. Add to that, the fact that the north magnetic pole has shifted 685 miles from Arctic Canada toward Siberia in the last 100 years. Glaciers receded in the Wisconsin Glacial Period because plate tectonics caused the Isthmus of Panama to form thus changing the earth's climate. Worry more about the sun’s electromagnetic impact on earth than my V8 engine.

I don't litter and I recycle. I refuse to buy carbon credits (a ponzi scheme), or an "eco-friendly" fire trap like the Volt, which coincidentally runs on electricity produced in....you guessed it, coal burning power plants.

funny skeptic i didnt see any name calling. i did catch the condescension and sarcasm from you and "me" though. also why is science a left or right issue? there is a saying especially among electricians "he knows just enough to be dangerous' . shore skeptic gives you a partly right answer and then gives you an absurd conclusion at the end . first of all you are off by about 600 miles on magnetic north. the earth has shifted its true north about 9 miles a year since 1904 only the past 3 yrs has it sped up to 30 miles a year . this has no effect on climate but it does screw with many gps and airports have had to adjust . tectonics also have nothing to do with ocean currents tsunamis not currents . there is a conveyer belt of water that drives the currents . its meant to run perfectly in salt water but the addition of trillions of gallons of much heavier fresh water from melting glaciers is slowing the conveyer down. when it stops it will be a big problem.yes the volt catches fire from side impacts but youre telling me regular cars dont? by the way they use about 75 cents a day in electricity. thats about a 25% the price of a gallon right now but sure youre way is better.and "me' dont you know anyone can add whatever they want as fact to wikopedia. you do know that right?

"me" i see youre on the patch all day so i,ll try and let you down easy. what you of course dont understand is the ocean is heating up not cooling. thanks for the 4 links on the blizzard of 1815 which were caused by a volcanic eruption spewing ash and blocking out the sun causing the world to cool rapidly within the space of 2 to 3 yrs. what youre missing is today more sunlight is getting thru our atmosphere and where there was once ice and snow to reflect it back into space instead it hits ground and ocean which absorb it instead of reflect it back . so once again the saying "knowing just enough to be dangerous" comes into play . tree rings and geologists who study rock can tell when the earth got dark and cold for as long as a 10 yr period at a time over thousands of yrs due to volcanoes but try to remember it cooled the earth not heated it. glad you got to dust off your bookshelf and feel free to ask questions first before you do the "nah nah nah' thing . you only end up looking foolish. and keep an eye out for that word "record" it even appears in this article

Maybe the governments of the world should stop screwing around with EMPs?!? (hint: Google "HAARP") While we’re at it, they should shop dumping aluminum particles in the air via chemtrails. This bogus attempt to reflect sunlight is only making humans sick, and killing our plants and livestock.

The number of total world earthquakes in the 1990's = 217,692. In the 2000's it was up to 292,128. Changes in ocean levels have more to do with the obliquity of the earth's axis, the Coriolis Effect, sun's impact on the electromagnetic field, and heat from the sun. Then there is the 300lb gorilla in the room that the hockey-stick club (East Anglia University) fails to mention....the earth's core. It is between 9000°F to 12,632°F. When earthquakes occur and volcanoes erupt, where do you think the heat goes?

This whole "green movement" is nothing but an elaborate ruse to get the people of the earth to relinquish their individual freedoms and submit to global governance (UN Agenda 21) by an elitist oligarchy like that outlined in Plato's Republic.

You more then half of the scientists the govt gave grants and funding to to prove global warming, have since come forward to say they lied. They skewed the numbers, FOR THE MONEY. Can any of the natural climate change skeptics point me to one piece of scientific evidence that conclusively links the rise in CO2 levels with rise in global temperature? All of the data I've ever seen shows that the rise in global temperature started in the 1880s, but the CO2 levels didn't materially start to increase until at least the 1920s.

ballot you dont think its a coincidence that in the 1880's the industrial age was beginning full swing and that in the 1920's cars were added to it? dont know where you got that data from you never stated your source but nasa , noaa and every top university in the world are saying its true. when they take those ice core samples and read them they tell the whole story of the past 100 yrs and much farther back thousands of years to see the dramatic difference.

joe - yes, I do think its a coincidence. Do you think its a coincidence that the scientists who benefit most financially are the ones pushing the theory of man-made global warming the hardest?

Take a look at this data for the CO2 levels, it shows the CO2 levels less that 300 going back 1000 years, but around 1920, it breaks 300 and stays there.
http://cdiac.ornl.gov/ftp/trends/co2/lawdome.combined.dat

Now take a look at the temperature at this link. You can find the actual numbers behind it and you'll see that the temperature started rising in the 1880s.
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo/globalwarming/paleolast.html

It's not true that every major university is saying man is causing global warming. There is a great amount of debate within the scientific community about the causes of global warming. Even NOAA attributes 70% of the 0.8 degree increase in temperature since 1880 to water vapor not CO2. Research it yourself and look at the actual source data not any sort summary that may have bias especially comments posted to a local news site like mine.

I would still love to any sort of data that shows CO2 causes global warming. I have seen many studies that show CO2 levels and temperature are correlated, but correlation does not mean causation. From the data that I've seen, no one can conclusively say that CO2 is the cause. Maybe I'm missing something.

Steve - to your point that the accuracy of the global temperature is improving, that is exactly one of the key issues that scientists have disagreements. How can anyone say that the earth is materially warming if there is such difficulty in measuring a global temperature?

thing is rich being ready for the worse is what the deal really is. you can see by those like shore skeptic and project highbeams not only do they not care about it but scoff at science. this has been going on for centuries like when the church told galileo he would be subject to torture if he didnt reverse his theory that the earth revolved the sun . can you imagine how many people laughed at the notion of cars , tv.s and phones when they first started appearing? what they dont understand is the trees that are being cut down at an alarming rate absord co2 . what ballot wont see is even though a certain amount of co2 is naturally made there are many more synthetic gases like cfc's , hfc's and pfc's created by man that add to the greenhouse . burning coal which is made of carbon turns it from a solid to gas state. all fossil fuels including oil are pure carbon. . so instead of reading what the top sciences we have on this planet have to say like nasa and noaa even national geographic instead they think of witty things to say and pat themselves on the back afterwards . its called greenhouse for a good reason. sunlight that gets in without being vented heats up things . for shore skeptic, moonbeamn and others i,ll simplify it by putting this link from nasa designed for kids to help them understand http://climate.nasa.gov./kids/bigquestions/greenhouseeffect .

i disagree rich our grandparents didnt know. same as they didnt know years ago that cigarettes caused cancer. and volcanoes spew more ash than gas . also gore never claimed to invent the internet he claimed to have introduced legislation that helped the inventors of the internet. those like shore skeptic and tim o connor who think they know better only believe what they want to. o connor says el nino is the cause of this warm weather . what he doesnt know is the past 10 yrs have been the hottest in the 20th century so unless this el nino travelled backwards in time what he said is nonsense . looking at his posts on literally every thread in the patch there is no subject he isnt an expert on. these two are the kind of people in january after a snowfall who say "it snowed wheres the global warming?" funny how they never ask when we have record breaking heatwaves like this past summer.shore skeptic says its cold in northern alaska and bases his opinion on that. meanwhile greenland has lost much of its ice .can we do anything? no its more than likely too late so we might as well whistle away as we head towards summers that will be more than brutal in the near future. shore skeptic thinks alaska is 300 miles from here. its hopeless

bn in your comments above you first said it was the earth's core because its hot ( has been for about 4 billion years now actually molten rock from what i hear) then you blame eathquakes , then it was the magnetic poles now you says its the sun? i,m waiting for you to claim harry potter did it next. and agenda 21? you are clearly a wackadoo jumping from theory to theory . has anyone actually read what agenda 21 says ? its like the mel gibson road warrior movies with all of america being put into camps etc. bn maybe you should switch to de caff i think the caffeine screws with your attention span.

Why is it that every time you disagree with a liberal, they are reduced to name-calling?

shore skeptic i guess you missed the witty comment from bn "its the sun stupid ". no name calling there right?judging by your comment on the other thread about your attorney representing someone named "shore skeptic" for defamation of character you must have a carbon monoxide leak in your house . so in the end carbon is giving you brain damage. i can only imagine a judge saying "ok shore skeptic raise your right hand and swear on the bible" . lol youre as clueless as your bad sci fi movie theories .

Now now, Johnny... don't tease Shore Skeptic -- or they will go crying to Patch editors and get yet another article's comment section shut down, right quick!

youre right stay calm . those like project moonbeam and skeptic usually are the kind of people that will throw the ball on the roof unless they get to play the position they think they should be playing.no shortage of the amount of times they went crying to the editor and shut yet another article down.
