Will Seaside Roller Coaster Stay In The Atlantic Ocean?

Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers said the site could become a "tourist attraction" as the boardwalk is rebuilt

Could the roller coaster that was swept into the Atlantic Ocean as Hurricane Sandy hit the Jersey Shore remain where it is, standing straight up?

So says Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers, who told WNBC-TV in New York that the ride could become "a great tourist attraction" if it stays where it is.

From WNBC's report:

The picture of the ride, which looks more like a water slide these days, has become an iconic image of the damage Sandy wreaked up and down the coast just over three weeks ago.

But Akers, in an interview with NBC 4 New York, said he is working with the Coast Guard to see if it is stable enough to leave it alone.

If it is, Akers said it would make "a great tourist attraction."

Meanwhile, demolition crews have already finished removing all of the damaged boardwalk. Businessmen like Mike Mergott of Mad Mike's Amusements said he is rebuilding because he is "100 percent sure" families want to come back.

Jim Loundy, who owned several buildings wiped away by the surge is confident he won't see another storm like this for "another 50 or 60 years."

Akers said construction on a new boardwalk should begin in January, and be ready by Memorial Day.

Ok so its been there since the 60's.. but how trashy is that going to look? Build a lil memorial for that side of the pier.. in terms of a board with pictures.. and call it a day. The last thing we need is a huge roller coaster sitting in the ocean just off our shore. Ugh..

The ocean will finish the job with wave-pounding, rust and salt corrosion, finally dissembling it. Better to put it in a small memorial park in town, with pictures of destroyed homes, piles of debris, etc.

Great idea! And Maybe tether some building debris, a some coffee tables and a pianos or two, to the ocean floor. Give Seaside that old "Titanic look". Better yet, why repair the houses at all. We could showcase them so the tourist could see what a freaking disaster looks like. Run busses....carnage sells!

How did this guy, Akers, get elected? He doesn't seem to me like he is exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer. Leaving the roller coaster in the ocean isn't making it a tourist attraction. It is and would be a hazzard and an eyesore left in the ocean, however! Maybe Akers is confused with the Ocean County Dump and Recycling Center?!

Seriously? Isn't this the same guy who is issuing citations to homeowners about their damaged property and getting the property demolished, cleaned-up, etc.? What the heck is going on with these officials? Btw - pretty sure they could have it towed out of the ocean and stored by that "reputable" Seaside towing company...currently under investigation.

That's crazy. Leaving a rusting hulk of a destroyed roller coaster is a tourist attraction? Sounds more like a tombstone to me. I can just imagine all the jetskis buzzing around it this summer and the young swimmers dared to try to swim out to it. Will they build a fence around it?

Took the words right out of my mouth, Chuck. Surfers loved that area. Wonder what kind of law suits SSH would be facing if chunks of debris start falling off and hitting swimmers during the summer's tourist season. Probably the most foolish thing I've heard from any official throughout this whole ordeal.

The mayor needs to get more sleep. Should we decide to return to the "New Seaside Heights", it won't be because I want to see a trashed roller coaster. Maybe if there were no "Beach Fees" and some value for your dollar.

AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS FITTING TO LEAVE IT. BUT MAYBE RAISED AND NOT METAL IN WATER TO CORRODE. BUT, AFTER READING THE POSTS HERE, DECIDED MAYBE MY THINKING WAS CLOUDED, OR SCREWED UP, WOULD BE MORE LIKE IT! YES, AKERS NEEDS SOME SLEEP. THE PROBLEM ABOUT BEACH FEES, WHICH I AM SORT OF AGAINST FOR MOST PART, IS THAT FREE BEACH, MORE TRASH....I DON'T WANT NO MORE TRASH IN THE TOWN. PLEASE TAKE THE TRASH OUT FOR GOOD! BUT, THAT REMAINS TO BE SEEN. OKAY, A MEMORIAL PARK FOR THE COASTER, AND DEFINATELY ALL THE PHOTO'S. WE DO HAVE A LOVELY MEMORIAL TO 911 NEAR BOROUGH HALL, A NICE CLOCK WITH PLAQUE'S AND FLOWERS AROUND IT. MAYBE THAT EMPTY LOT, WHICH IS NOW HOLDING ALL THE MOLDED TRASH COULD BE USED. IT COULD BE SEEN GOING OUT OF SEASIDE AND COMING IN. YES, GREAT IDEA. GLAD I THOUGHT OF IT..........:)

Besides for the obvious safety concerns, surrounding people who think it will be "cool" to swim, boat, or otherwise try to get out to this - I think they should remove it from the ocean. Anyone with good memories surrounding this former attraction wants to remember it as it was BEFORE the storm hit, and not see this as a constant reminder of the devastation the hurricane caused.

One of the most rediculous comments I've ever heard. Is this guy serious. For one thing I think he should be pre occupied with rebuilding his town, and your more worried about tourism right now. There's hundreds of people still without homes lets give them a home to come back to first then worry about that. And the last thing I want to remember as a local is seeing that roller coaster in the water every time I'm at the beach and remember the total devastation that took place that resulted in that roller coaster landing there. This is rediculous and I am embarrassed to say he's the mayor of my home.

Kids will want to swim out to it to climb on! That is not a safe structure! THINK!!
Another bad storm with strong tide could push it over and hope no one is near it!
Think first - before tragedy happens! Then it will be a submerged structure-what then?!! Who will sue who for the death of a loved one or injured one? THINK!!
It's an eye sore and doesn' steel rust in salty water?
People will swim out there to get curious, and isn't that a danger?
Who's to say how long it will stay standing? Has that been thought of yet? Get engineers to check the structure out -to see best way to handle this behemoth!!
Take it down and put it on dry land in pieces, for people to gawk at and take pictures of it! Much safer way to go!!
Is it out far enough where small boats can get up close, what if it starts to lean,
they can get trapped or killed by it! Someone please THINK OF SAFETY FIRST!!
Isn't safety one of the first things to think of in this case? Hope no one gets hurt by it!!

September 8, 1934 the luxury liner Morro Castle ran aground on the beach at Asbury Park, directly adjacent to the convention center. The 11,520 ton vessel was carrying wealthy passengers from Havana to New York City. The Morro Castle was about 6 miles off the New Jersey coast, being pummeled by gale force winds when the order was given to abandon ship. Crew members commandeered life boats, leaving helpless passengers on board. As rescue ships raced to the area (one of which was the USS Arizona, later to be sunk at Pearl Harbor), the ship drifted to shore to land on the beach at Asbury Park. 133 passengers died in the disaster.

Leaving it as a tourist attraction isn't a great idea - but, by the same token, it shouldn't be on the top of the priority list to get rid of it either. We really don't know what will become of it if it is left where it is. I am not sure if a true expert has weighed in on what would become of it if it stayed there, and how it would affect ocean life, etc. Bottom line is that it should be the least of their concerns right at this moment.
As for the "Next Sandy" and whether it will be bigger and worse or if it will come sooner rather than later, nobody has any clue. They said the same thing about Katrina - warned about Isaac going a similar path - and it wasn't nearly as damaging to New Orleans. There were a lot of factors that need to come together almost precisely for Sandy to create the havoc to our coast - we should rebuild smartly to protect ourselves from future storms, but we also can't just throw out that another will be becoming in the near to mid future. That is just doomsday talk that isn't tied to anything truly scientific beyond global warming perhaps HELPING the storm - but not actually producing the storm.

Now is the time to remove it before corrosion sets in. The sooner the better. Once corrosion sets in it will be near impossible to get it out of the sand without it breaking apart. It will also continue to sink into the sand. They need to act now or risk the whole area within 200 yards needing to be permanently closed to bathers. If they act now they can get most of the coaster out in tact.

Maybe the Mayor is thinking of a sequel to Jersey Shore, some morons from out of state come and take up residence on the structure but are slowly stealing it in small pieces to sustain a drunken obnoxious lifestyle. They degrade the community and deter families from visiting. It could be called "Jersey Scrap".

Everybody wants to rebuild, huh? You all better think really hard about that.
Storms of this magnitude will increase in frequency. Like Sandy, they feed on warm ocean water, and global warming is warming the oceans.
There are huge sections of barrier islands from Florida to Maryland where there are no structures because Flood Insurance is not available. At any price.
If you rebuild, don't be surprised if your FI premiums go through the roof...

Mr. Mayor Akers instead of concentrating on ridiculous ideas like this one why don't you try thinking of a way to better Seasides future like stop housing welfare maggots, heroin addicts, 'Jersey Shore' crap shows etc. so that our children and families can be safe. Really, what world are you living in? Open yours eyes and look around at the towns up and down the coast line from SleazySide Heights, all these towns are family oriented safe places to live and visit... LBI, Point Pleasant etc. Plus all of SS's dirt bags end up selling drugs over the bridge polluting our neighborhoods making for an unsafe place to live. Try to stop your one track thinking of bringing in quick easy revenue like installing parking meters every square inch. Concentrate on the long term scheme of things like culture and nice restaurants. Remember good things happen to hard working people that help others... for real. You probably think I am a little crude and direct but sometimes the truth hurts. This is your chance to make a real difference and finally clean up Seaside Heights for our loved ones futures. I've said my peace.

Not that I don't agree with you...Point Pleasant has there problems too. They needed to clean up their act. There is a lot of Sleazy Hotels, drugs, drunks going around. Parking is a problem too. I hope it brings some culture, nicer hotels and restaurants at the boardwalk too. Asbury Park has more culture and nice restaurants than point. Just go to their beach area and see for yourself. I don't know to much about their hotels.

insist that whole pier from pilings and rides to nails and wires that held it together "privately owned property anyway?" i am sure the who ever actually owns/insures the now sunken coaster with have something to say about this mayors decision/thought.
Plus, isint the coaster actually in Berkeley twp anyway? why would he make a decision or throw out such an idea for something that does not even effect his twp

IMO, he and all political officials needs to concentrate on infrastructure (repair/rebuild/improve) of the town/s first, then apply their mind and willpower to help get any full time residents back into there homes. then lets worry about "tourism" even if the "shore towns" had the money in the bank to pay for "everything" just labor alone to rebuild everything that "was" would still take at least 3 years before its "returned to the tourist paradise it once was"<--sarcasm in "

SEASIDE HAS LOTS OF BUMPS AND WARTS AND ALL, BUT MANY PEOPLE LOVE IT ANYWAY, AS THE YEARS PREVIOUS TO THE LAST 30 WERE YEARS THAT IT DID SEEM LIKE A PARADISE FOR SOME. IT'S NOT SO MUCH THE TOWN, BUT WHO IT'S LEADERS ARE AND WHO THEY LET IN FOR PURPOSES OF GREED. MANY ARE STUCK THERE NOW WITH PROPERTIES NOT WORTH A DIME, AND WITH WHAT'S LIKELY TO TRANSPIRE BETWEEN THE OWNERS AND LEADERS IS GOING TO BE HUGE AND PROBLEMATIC. I DON'T SEE THE OWNERS WINNING THOUGH. THE CORRUPTION IS GREAT. ME THINKS THAT THE GOV. SHOULD GET MORE INVOLVED. THINK HE KNOWS WHAT GOES ON THERE? I WONDER....BUT PLEASE DON'T VENT SARCASM TOWARD THE TOWN ITSELF. SHAME WHAT'S BEEN DONE TO IT IN THE NAME OF GETTING DOLLARS. I DO BELIEVE IT WILL BE REBUILT. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE COASTER WHERE IT IS, BUT I ALSO UNDERSTAND IT WOULD NOT BE A GOOD IDEA ALL AROUND. YES, RANDOM, COASTER DEEP INTO SEASIDE HEIGHTS AT THE NORTHERN END TOWARD ORTLEY. ANOTHER COASTER IS IN SSP. MANGLED ALSO. YOU'VE SEEN PHOTO'S OF THAT, I'M SURE. THE MAYOR AND COUNCILPEOPLE WON'T BUILD THE TOWN BACK, THE PEOPLE WILL. AND, YES, THEY WILL. SEASIDE, THE PLACE FOR "SUN AND FUN" SINCE ABOUT 1913 WILL RISE AGAIN FROM THE ASHES. "JERSEY STRONG" THERE'S NO OTHER WAY!

Jay Gee, I happened to agree with you as far as it is the leaders fault on why seaside has become what the town is. It is not the towns residents fault. It is the leaders who look the other way on what is going on in the town and what they are letting those business owners and those who visit or stay get away with. It is all about greed and doubt you will be able to stop it because to many are making a heck of a lot of money. More than most are willing to admit. That is why the properties in seaside has become worthless compared to other beach resorts that has nothing to do with super storm sandy. It is a shame what's been done to seaside in the name of getting dollars. Seaside is given a second chance to change it. If only you had the right leaders and obviously the mayor is not one of them. For him to even suggest this is doesn't yell success or change for seaside. Nothing wrong with tourist, it is getting the right tourist to come to your town. This could easily happen to other beach resort town if these all these clowns who are running them let it happen.

YES, REALLY, WHAT YOU SAY IS TRUE ALSO. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS IN GETTING THE PEOPLE TO GET THIS GUY AND ALL HIS CRONIES OUT OF OFFICE. DON'T KNOW IF YOU ARE AWARE, BUT HE ONLY TOOK OFFICE ON THE 1ST OF THIS PAST YEAR. HE'S A CHEF AT HIS OWN RESTAURANT ALSO. IT'S CALLED BOBBER'S. IT'S A BREAKFAST PLACE, AND HE COOKS VERY WELL. GIVES GOOD FOOD FOR THE SMALL CHARGE, AND HE AND HIS FAMILY RUN IT, AND I THINK THAT'S WHAT THEY SHOULD CONTINUE TO DO, AND THAT'S IT. NOTHING ELSE. THE PLACE IS OPEN IN SUMMER ONLY IN MORNING TIL 12:00 P.M. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH OWNERS TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN, AND SOME OF THEM HAVE BEEN DEVASTATED TO POINT OF NO RETURN. WILL COST THEM SO, SO, SO MUCH MONEY. WE DON'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT MANY OF THE PLACES YET, AND IF THEY WILL HAVE SUFFERED TOO MUCH DAMAGE TO BE LIVABLE.

Their is one pier (Casino Pier) in Seaside Heights. The other pier, also mangled and destroyed is (Funtown Pier), in Seaside Park. That's the one that shows the ferris wheel standing in the debris near or in ocean. There were many many rides on that pier mostly for children. I believe that the owner stated only 4 of those rides were left standing of the entire pier. The Funtown Pier, although located in Seaside Park, is actually right at the edge of Seaside Heights, just as you enter the town of Seaside Park. So if you stood in center of boardwalk between the two, they would both be visible, and both were used about the same. The children loved the rides in Seaside Park section, as the rides there were mostly for toddler children. With a few like the ferris wheel and tower of fear and another roller coaster & couple others for adults. You could get tied up onto a slingshot there, and be slung out over the ocean. Wish I could have done that ride, but, dunno if my heart would have been able to withstand it....:) They didn't have that when I was at my ride-going peak...many years ago.

I think the comment to "leave it as a tourist attraction" was probably born out of an estimate of what it's going to cost to get that thing plucked out of the ocean and properly disposed of. He probably just wanted to see what the public's reaction might be to such an idea and if he could get away with it on the "cheap"!

Leaving that roller coaster in the ocean would not only be an "eye sore", and dangerous; but would also be a constant reminder of "devastation" to the people who lost their homes, cars, or personal belongings. Some people still have fond, cherished family memories from years ago, so not such a good idea.

To be honest with you, I'm now 57 years old and have owned property down in Seaside Park with my family all my life. I cannot ever remember them ever! doing major structural piling work underneath those piers. Yes, replacement sections have always been done topsides to the boardwalk, but to my recollection never anything to the underneath and the pilings. To me, I'm just glad the collapse of those sections happened when no one was on them. It was only a matter of time before it was going to happen anyway during a stressful event and thank God no one was one them when they went I say..... They will rebuild it, better and stronger this time I'm sure, but let's just be thankful that collapse didn't happen during a run of the mill Nor'easter with people in those bars out there and such....

James is right. The government should mandate specific areas that are in danger of repeated flood disasters, because when all is said and done -- for example -- if the government gives you 100% of your loss to rebuild, as an example, it's all of us collectively that will be paying that tax bill. Now mind you, it's better than giving the money to Egypt and Pakistan but there's a limit to how much each of us can endure, whether it's rebuilding in a danger zone after having lost everything or the higher taxes to pay for it all.

*Low lifes that walk the streets
*dingy hotels and the clients they attract
*crime and drugs
*vision of the current administrationex (ex.roller coaster to remain)
*loud bars and the cute little slap on the wrist they get from the police when complained upon
Look at the current administration
The seats have been held by their families for years.
WE NEED TO SPEAK UP
GET THE BARS TO SHUT DOWN AT 12
ENFORCE SOME BASIC HEALTH ORDINANCES AND CLEAN UP THE HOTELS
BRING FAMILIES BACK AND ATTRACT YEAR ROUND RESTAURANT OWNERS AND UPSCALE EATERIES SUCH AS ASBURY PARK
The town wants the complainers to drift away. they ignore all complaints because many own businesses throughout town. The later the bars are open, the more alcohol they sell. But guess what, we pay the price. Elimminate public urinating, getting sick the
