"Rock Of Ages" the movie which was adapted from the very popular Broadway musical opened in movie theaters Friday, June 15. The movie stars some A-listers like Tom Cruise, Paul Giamatti, Alec Baldwin, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.  Also starring are Bryan Cranston, Mary J. Blige, Malin Ackerman, Russell Brand, former Dancing With The Stars dancer Julianna Hough, and newcomer Diego Boneta.

The story takes place in 1987 at the Bourbon Club in Los Angeles, which is owned by Dennis Dupree played by Alec Baldwin.  Most of the employees at the Bourbon Club are wannabe rock stars.  Tom Cruise plays Stacee Jaxx a famous self aborbed, alcohol ridden rock god who is playing his last gig at the Bourbon with the band Arsenal before he goes solo.

Malin Ackerman's character Constance is a writer for Rolling Stone Magazine who succumbs to Jaxx's allure. Paul Giamatti plays Stacee Jaxx's sleazy manager. Sherrie an aspiring singer who is fresh off the bus from Tulsa, Oklahoma is played by Julianna Hough.  Diego Boneta plays Drew a wannabe rock star who works at the Bourbon.  He and Sherrie both work at the club and are head over heels in love with each other.  

Russell Brand is an emcee at the club and is Dupree's love interest.  Catherine Zeta-Jones plays an uptight wife of the Mayor of Los Angeles who's crusade is against the evils of rock and roll.  R&B singer, Mary J. Blige is an owner of a gentlemen's club on the Sunset Strip.

The movie has a few funny moments brilliantly played by Baldwin and Brand who get to show off their vocals.  Tom Cruise overacts the part of a boozy, famous rocker.  To his credit, Cruise's singing is a blend of Bon Jovi and Brett Michaels; which is not half bad to hear.

Cutie Julianna Hough singing the 1980's rock songs is a little to syrupy.  Diego Boneta sounds good, but plays his character like he was cast for the show Glee.  Mary J. Blige legitimizes and gives justice to the sounds of the 80's.  Oh yes, Jaxx's sidekick is a monkey named Hey Man who is a scene stealer in the movie.   

Overall, the movie's story, songs of the 1980's, and look are the same as the Broadway musical.  But this movie does not translate on the silverscreen, as well as, it does on the stage. If you want to see cheesy entertainment, love the 1980's songs, then this is a movie to see. I give this movie a rating of 2 1/2 mullets.
