Ideas for 'Cultural District' Along LBI Taking Shape

Group formed out of federal grant.

Making Long Beach Island a year-long cultural and arts destination is one of the agenda items of the recently formed Culture and Arts of Long Beach Island (CALBI) partnership. Last year, The Long Beach Island Foundation for the Arts was  awarded a $25,000 federal grant to create a framework for a cultural district on LBI.  The planning grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) “Our Town” program funds focus groups and meetings of the key partners to map out the activities, programs and venues that would be included in the cultural district. Now the district is beginning to take shape on LBI, in the form of the CALBI partnership. The group is tasked with proposing ideas to make LBI a year-round cultural destination, and so far …

Surflight Theatre Kicks off Summer Season With The Boy Friend

Musical comedy will begin May 24 and continue through June 16.

The following is a press release submitted to Patch by the Surflight Theatre. Surflight Theatre, under the leadership of Executive Director Ken Myers presents the 1920s musical comedy The Boy Friend, from May 24 through June 16.   Sandy Wilson’s 1954 musical comedy, The Boy Friend, is a recipe for gleeful romance: Take a rich young girl, a poor boy who’s employed as a messenger, a group of happy flappers, some well-intentioned adults. Mix carefully with a new romance and a re-kindled one.  Add “jazzy” music.  Put dreams in the lyrics (“I Could Be Happy with You”) along with exuberance and joy in the dances (“Won’t You Charleston with Me?”).  Shake well, and you have Sandy Wilson’s skillfully inventive spoof of 1920s musicals.  The Boy …

Oyster Creek To Test Emergency Sirens

Barnegat Mayor notes that new sirens are being tested by Office of Emergency Management.

A three-minute full volume siren will be activated within Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station’s emergency planning zone at 9 a.m., and four times throughout the day on May 29. The sirens will also go off for shorter test periods on May 23 at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and on May 30.  The system will sound as a part of Exelon’s comprehensive emergency preparedness program. This test is not a signal to evacuate, according to Barnegat Township Mayor Len Morano, who spoke about the test at the Township Committee meeting last night. "It will sound pretty loud but don't everyone panic when you hear it," Morano said.  Although Oyster Creek conducts electronic testing of its sirens on a weekly basis, this is an annual test, issued by Exelon …

@A Resident. It was a long time ago (8-9 years ago) and only for a year. I don't think anyone else was "paying my share" rather I think Comcast operates on a high margin and there is room to haggle. I havn't had many service issues with them over the years. One thing I have learned with Comcast (or I guess any cable company) is if you have to "trim down" because your bill it too high it's best to…   more ›

Coffee With the Chamber Event Kicks Off Wednesday

Southern Ocean Chamber celebrates 100 years.

In 1914 Long Beach Island was enjoying Victorian splendor, with expanding rail service and the opening of the car bridge, large hotels and amenities were ready to serve the finest from Philadelphia, New Jersey and beyond.  As businesses expanded to meet the demand, so did the need to establish a business and tourism group to represent them; and thus the Long Beach Island Board of Trade, which later changed its name to the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce was formed. In preparation for the organization's centennial, a 100-year committee was formed last year to commemorate a century of service to the community. Kicking off this month and continuing right through 2014, the regional chamber along with local business groups and …
