Beach Buggies Allowed Back in Holgate Refuge Area

Long Beach Township made repairs to the entrance

Repairs have been made to the vehicle access point of the Holgate portion of Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, allowing beach buggies access to the popular fishing site.

The entire refuge had been closed due to the federal government shutdown. On Thursday, the refuge was reopened to pedestrians but damage caused by last week's nor'easter had kept the site off-limits to beach buggies.

On Friday, the access point was reopened after Long Beach Township, which controls the entrance trail, repaired the damage.

Vehicles accessing the site must have a Long Beach Township beach buggy permit.

The reopening comes as the second week of the LBI Surf Fishing Tournament comes to a close. Holgate is one of the most popular striped fishing locations on the island, and an important location for tournament participants.
