Helping The Guy, 'Jimmy O' Of Manahawkin, Who Always Helped Others

Things were bad enough for James “Jimmy O” O’Shaughnessy after Hurricane Sandy. He was always the guy who always helped others; but with his Manahawkin house a wreck, he found himself nearly helpless.

In July 2013, he fell off his dock behind his house and struck his head on the bottom. He suffered a severe spinal injury that paralyzed him from the neck down. As he was being treated for that, he had a cancerous mass on his kidney that was discovered.

Now, his friends say, it's time to help the guy who always helped them.

A benefit will be held Saturday, April 12, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus, 49-18 Columbus Blvd., Woodside, N.Y. Please see the attached photo for more information.

Jimmy O, a former New York City police officer, was the first guy to help another cop when he got into trouble, Cox said. Now they're returning the favor, raising money for him to help him get through the worst.

"Insurance is good but it only goes so far," said his friend, Bill Cox, who served with Jimmy on the NYPD. "He has mounting medical bills, needs 24/7 nursing care and has had to buy a medical van for transportation. Plus, he needs a motorized wheelchair since all he can do at this point is move his hand slightly."

Through it all, Cox said, Jimmy O has had a smile on his face and he "really is the salt of the earth."
