Holgate Refuge Reopens to Pedestrians, Remains Closed to Vehicles

Storm damaged will have the be repaired before vehicles are allowed in

Pedestrians are being allowed back into the Holgate portion of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge now that the federal government shutdown has ended, though vehicles are still being barred from entering.

Refuge officials announced the reopening of their facilities on Thursday.

In order to access the Holgate portion of the refuge, however, pedestrians and vehicles must traverse an access point that is controlled by Long Beach Township. While pedestrians are being allowed in, the township is responsible for making safety repairs following the recent nor'easter before vehicles can be let in.

Long Beach Township police announced on Tuesday that township beaches other than Holgate were open to vehicle access.

Other refuge areas that have reopened include the deCamp Wildlife Trail in Brick Township and the Barnegat Observation Platform in Barnegat.
