Barnegat Garden Club News

Barnegat Garden Club and Barnegat Library join in welcoming the gardening season.

The Barnegat Garden Club is helping launch the gardening season with a plant-swap on Tuesday, May 1, 7:00 PM at the Barnegat Branch of the Ocean County Library at 112 Burr Street. This year’s swap will feature a talk from the Master Gardeners of Ocean County “Vegetable Gardening: Planning and Prep”

Bring up to five plants divided from your garden beds or container plants to share. Please label each with care instructions and wrap the plants securely. Bring any planters, small gardening tools gardening books you've already read or tools or extra plants for the donation table. The Plant Swap is a great opportunity to meet other gardeners in the area, share tips and make new friends. The program is free even if you don't have anything to swap.

No garden?  Even the smallest patio or porch can boast a crop of vegetables or a garden of flowers in containers. Planter boxes, wooden barrels, hanging baskets and large flowerpots are just some of the containers that can be used. Try strawberries in a hanging basket, a mix of salad greens in a container, tomatoes and herbs for you special recipes, colorful flowers and foliage to brighten a front door. The container gardener is limited only by your imagination.

The Barnegat Garden Club is a service organization established in 1988. The club has undertaken numerous projects throughout the town including planting and maintaining the barrel planters in the downtown and the municipal complex. The club offsets the cost of the plants through donations for the Adopt a Barrel program.

The club meets on the first Thursday of each month from March through December at 7:00 p.m. at the Cox House, North Main Street, Barnegat. We are always looking for new members. Whether you have a garden plot or garden pot you are welcome to join. If you would like more information, please email us at barnegatgardenclub@yahoo.com.
