UPDATE: Ocean County Man Hit By Lightning

A Berkeley Township man was struck by lightning earlier this afternoon at Island Beach State Park, a state Department of Environmental Protection spokesperson said.

The 48-year-old man was hit around 1:15 p.m., after fishing in an area south of Ocean Bathing Beach 2, said DEP spokesman Larry Hajna.

"Preliminary indication was that the lightning struck his rod as he was leaving the beach," Hajna said. "The beaches were being cleared because of a sudden thunderstorm."

He was alert and conscious when he transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, but reported numbness in his legs, Hajna said.
