Genuardi's in Barnegat Set to Close This Weekend

Smaller Wawa also closing.

This weekend, Barnegat Township will lose its only supermarket, Genuardi's on West Bay Avenue, and a smaller Wawa convenience store, which is also located on West Bay Avenue.

"Can you believe it is closing," one resident was overheard saying to another in the parking lot of the Genuardi's store earlier this week.

Despite the fact that Genuardi employees were informed of the closure in October, many township residents are upset at seeing their town's only supermarket close.

At the recent Township Committee meeting, several residents expressed dismay at the closure, and wondered how the closure would affect other businesses located in the same area as Genuardi's.

"Having no food store in this town is a travesty," said Barnegat resident Larry Cataldo.

Joseph Provdo, who works at Marchiono's Pizza and Pasta, which is located a few stores away from Genuardi's, said Genuardi's has been scaling back operations since the closure was announced. He noted that even though the shelves are basically empty at Genuardi's this week, the pizza place still was doing a good business.

"We have the best pizza around, so I am not as worried," Provdo said. Regardless, he said, several business owners have expressed an interest in looking at their rental agreements to see if they would need to pay as much toward rent, since the anchor of the property will now be vacant.

At the recent Township Committee meeting, several committee members discussed the rental issue. Committeman Martin Lisella said "once an anchor store leaves, the rest of the tenants should have a reduction."

Safeway, Inc., the supermarket chain's parent company,

The Barnegat location, open since 1999, was among those stores which was up for sale; it was not part of the Giant deal.

In a statement released to the press earlier this year,  Steve Neibergall, President of Safeway's Eastern Division, said the company was planning on focusing resources in those "operating areas where we have a stronger presence."

Wawa, meanwhile, opened a larger convenience store in Barnegat, and a manager at the smaller store that is closing told Patch that most of the employees would be relocated to either the larger location or the Pebble Beach location.

Notice: Should anyone wish to lease the vacant Genuardi's
you can surely contact the township clerk and or the Walters Group. I was told they had built the entire complex, it's possible they still own the strip mall.

Gee Sal, I didn't know the township clerk was also the rental agent for the Walter's Group or any other landlord.
Rick December 16, 2012 at 06:11 am
It must be something they want everybody to attend. That's why they're holding in in the morning on a weekday. Don't most of the residents of Stafford have to go to work that day?
I would go but I would be taking up a seat that a township resident could use.
Chris December 17, 2012 at 05:47 pm
That could be a smart move on their part as I don't think there are any nearby.
Rick December 17, 2012 at 07:34 pm
Seniors who won't drive on a highway?
They are all out there in the left lane of the Parkway. Doing 40 MPH
Rick December 17, 2012 at 07:37 pm
Sal, do you think at some time you could put together a coherent sentence?
John B Taxpayer December 23, 2012 at 10:12 am
There is no Business Planning! We tore down a nature area for a sandlot that sits vacant in a terrible economy. We have 6 red lights from the parkway to Barnegat Blvd that turns Red upon ALL 6 approaches and eliminated All Right on REDs. The county only has control on the county roads The State only has control on the Parkway light and ALL agencies would and can change this upon the request of o Town and/or Police. Complain all you want MANY residents will avoid this nightmare regardless who or what occupies this area! Most state with dual turning right hand lanes allow The INSDE lane to turn on red, so if you think we can't drive with good judgment we did before this debacle. As for the New WAWA. I protest it I will not use it unless I'm coming off the parkway. Besides folks, our Wawa's (Manahawkin and Barnegat) are ripping us off on the gas prices! Lacy is 6 cents cheaper; TR is 15 cents cheaper! $.3.31 currently WAWA Old Bridge $3.07 F Wawa! Support another station and whoever moves into their old location. STOP complaining let your wallet do the speaking......
Rick December 23, 2012 at 08:12 pm
In case you haven't noticed, every traffic light in town is on either a county or state road except the light on Lighthouse to turn into WaWa.
Rick December 23, 2012 at 08:17 pm
It seems you would be happier if you lived in Lacey, Toms River or Old Bridge.
John B Taxpayer December 24, 2012 at 08:55 am
And the town has a lot of influence in what the county/state does as far as redlight timing! Rick you're the sucker that buys into this BS. or you're some how connected to this stupidity! I'm just saying IF there's enough voices that say something about this things will change. I wouldn't open ANY business in this town, as things are currently. Suggesting I move tells me it's either one or you're simply a moron. You need to be in the meadow with the rest of the sheep....
Rick December 24, 2012 at 03:37 pm
I didn't suggest that you move, I merely noted that you seem to think so many other towns in the area have much better conditions and that you might be happier if you lived in one of them.
After all, it is the Christmas season and I believe everyone should be happy at this time of year.
Rick December 24, 2012 at 03:38 pm
Merry Christmas John B
Rick December 29, 2012 at 08:29 pm
Do you know how long it took to get a left turn lane and left arrow at Barnegat Blvd & Rt 9?
It was in fact several years.
Rick December 29, 2012 at 08:56 pm
In case you didn’t see the results of the recent elections, the local incumbents lost by a large margin in the last election. Apparently enough people did want something to change.
Let’s get them some time and see what happens. .
Rick December 29, 2012 at 10:09 pm
John B, you really have a problem with no turn on red intersections.
Where in Barnegat do you know of DUAL right turn lanes? Where do you see a no turn on red intersection that shouldn't be?
Dave Sleeper December 30, 2012 at 12:06 am
I can see how this conversationis closly related to the closing of Genuardi's.

We could use a really good bakery in this town as there aren't any good bakeries close by. We had to drive to LBI to go to a good bakery. They closed up for the winter and now there is no option. Don't even get me started on the rt 9 bakery. We have to send word to friends and relatives to bring down bread when they come from up north jersey and then freeze the extra. Not even shop rite has good bread.
Genuardis was high priced. But at least we had a super market. We should try for a trader joes to go in there.
