Long-Time Manahawkin Business Expands With New Owners

Acquires All American Graphics in Brick Township

When Carman and Denise Puma bought Uniformity from its retiring owner in 2003, the business had been a fixture in the Manahawkin area for 30 years.

Carman Puma said they started out selling medical and restaurant uniforms and supplies like the old owner, but in a couple of years added tuxedo rentals and sales, followed by printing and embroidery.

Now, each season brings a new element, according to Denise Puma.

"We've developed into a multi-faceted business," she said.  "It's a rough economy so we have to go year-round."

On July 1, the couple purchased All American Graphics in Brick, moving all of that company's operations to their Manahawkin location.

Three to four years ago, they began selling medical uniforms and accessories online, doubling their business.

"The Internet has hurt local stores," said Carman Puma. "Nurses work 24-hour shifts; when they get off, they can order at 2 a.m."

Denise, who works in the medical profession herself as a nurse, said their customer base is increasing through the use of the Internet.  With the purchase of All American Graphics, they expanded their business to statewide, but with web sales, she said they are getting orders from all over the country.

Carman Puma, who has a background in retail sales, said he has big hopes for his business.

"When we first opened, I always was thinking of franchising," he said.  "I would like another Uniformity in North Jersey or Maryland."

The Pumas said they feel the strength of their business is customer service.

"We're not like the box stores; we don't treat anyone like a number," said Carman Puma.  "We are active in the community."

"People like to walk in and be recognized," said Denise Puma.  "We have longstanding customers.  We offer so much under one roof."

They have a lot of customers from their home town of Barnegat and run into clients quite often.

"Being a local business, no matter where you go, you see your customers," said Carman.  "While having your own business you control your own destiny and make your own decisions, the business is 24 hours; you never forget about it, you eat it and sleep it."

Uniformity is located at 657 East Bay Avenue, Unit 12 in Manahawkin Mart.  The phone number is 609-597-6222.
