Barnegat Woman Accused Of Stealing $150,000 From Mother

Ocean County Grand Jury Indicts Evelyn Hendershot on theft charge

A Barnegat woman is accused of siphoning more than $150,000 from her mother over the past four years by tapping into her home equity line of credit, Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato said.
An Ocean County Grand Jury recently indicted Evelyn Hendershot, 59, on one count of second degree theft and one count of second degree financial facilitation of criminal activity, Coronato said.
The indictment states that from April 2005 through 2009, Hendershot withdrew and transferred monies from her mother's home equity line of credit to various bank accounts under Hendershot’s control.
Hendershot then transferred the funds to various credit cards and made numerous ATM cash withdrawals. The total amount estimated to be involved over the four-year period was $150,400, Coronato said.
The scheme was uncovered when a family member came forward to report a suspicion of Hendershot’s activity.
The case was investigated by Detectives James Conroy and Lindsay Llauget of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Special Investigations Unit of the Economic Crimes Bureau.
Hendershot is currently free on $75,000 cash bail, with no ten percent option. A court date has yet to be determined, Coronato said.
