Fisherman, Beachcombers Flock to Holgate
The wildlife refuge reopened to pedestrians on Sept. 1.
For Stanley and Nancy Steinberg of Ship Bottom, fishing on the Holgate portion of the Edwin B. Forsythe Refuge has been a tradition since 1957.
The wildlife refuge reopened to pedestrians Sept. 1st, and vehicles with permits are now allowed. On Saturday, scores of hikers, fisherman and beachcombers flocked to the area.
Jason Timpanaro of Westwood, N.J. came with Rebecca Dellasalla of Summit, N.J. with hopes of finding treasures that washed ashore over the summer months.

“This area of Long Beach Island is less traveled during the summer months, so we show up early in September to look for sea glass,” Timpanaro said.
Bob Irwin of Manahawkin packed up his four-wheel-drive vehicle for a day of fishing with his son and grandsons. It was Irwin’s first time out on the refuge in 25 years.

Jim Griffin of Southampton, N.J. visits every weekend from September though November, the best months to visit the southern most end of the island, according to Griffin. Not everyone was there to play on Saturday.
ALO volunteer Liam Andersen, 11, of North Beach Haven was scouring the beach and dunes for any garbage that needed picking up.
Vehicle permits are available at the Long Beach Township police department located at 6805 Long Beach Blvd.Brant Beach, NJ 08008. The cost is $50 per vehicle for an annual permit and payable by check only.
