  • An afternoon of garvey races at the Barnegat municipal docks begins at noon on Sunday, July 3. Local race group Jersey Outlaws is organizing the event this year, with races planned for garveys – a traditional Barnegat Bay boat originally designed for shallow-water fishing and now built for speed – speed skiff and ski boats. There will be live music, face painting and free hot dogs for Scouts who come in uniform. The group asks attendees to bring an item to send to military service members overseas. Scroll down to the bottom of this story for details on the other local garvey club's weekend plans.

  • On the Fourth itself, head back to the docks for the township’s fireworks show. Live music starts at 7:30 p.m., and the pyrotechnics begin at dusk.
