North Jersey Man Accused of Assaulting Stafford Officer, Drug Possession

Alleged assailant was thought to have been intoxicated at the Stafford Township Holiday Inn, prompting call to police

A North Jersey man has been arrested for assaulting a Stafford Township police officer.

According to a deparment release, Stafford Police Officer Ptl. Robert Mullin responded to the Holiday Inn on Route 72 about 12:45 a.m. Friday for a report of an intoxicated male causing a disturbance in the lobby.

The man, identified as 22-year-old Jeffrey Schermerhorn, of Madison, Morris County, is accused of resisting arrest and assaulting an officer.

After being placed under arrest it was subsequently found he was in possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, police said.

Schermerhorn was charged with aggravated assault on a policer officer, disorderly conduct, marijuana possession and resisting arrest. He was lodged in the Ocean County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Mullin was the arresting officer in the case. He was assisted by officers McVey, Smith and Cahill.
