Reports Of Metal Washing Up On LBI Beaches

Long Beach Island authorities said on Monday that small pieces of metal had washed up on some island beaches.

The island's health department received word from the state Department of Environmental Protection that a citizen had reported seeing small pieces of metal collecting near the shoreline between 11th and 14th streets in Beach Haven, according to the Long Beach Township Police Department.

"The pieces of material appear similar to the wiring of old dune fencing that may have been destroyed by Hurricane Sandy," the department said in a statement.

A survey on Monday morning of 17 blocks from 2nd Street in Beach Haven to 19th Street in North Beach Haven, collected about a dozen pieces of this material, the statement said.

"Beach patrols have been notified and are directed to canvass their beaches," the statement said. "Should material be identified that presents a safety concern," lifeguards have been directed to relocate swimmers to an adjacent beach.

Beachgoers who encounter debris on the sand or in the water are being directed to notify a lifeguard. If a lifeguard is not available, beachgoers can contact the local police, the local health department, or the DEP hotline at 1-877-WARN-DEP or waterwaydebris@dep.state.nj.us.
