Tax Bills in Barnegat, Manahawkin Low Compared to State Average

Cost of rebuilding after Sandy could affect rates, according to Star-Ledger analysis.

Both Barnegat and Manahawkin's property tax bills were lower than the state average in 2012, according to a published analysis in the Star-Ledger.

Barnegat's average tax bill is $5,659.98 and Stafford's average tax bill is $5,728.40, compared to the state average of $7,870.28.

The Star-Ledger report noted that property taxes statewide rose 2.4 percent in 2011, the first year Christie’s 2 percent cap was in effect. But the trend of lower increases could be reversed because of Sandy, according to the report and local officials.

The current tax base is certain to drop in Stafford, with an estimated 4500 homes and business having their current assessments adjusted due to the damage they suffered during Sandy, Stafford Mayor John Spodofora said during a recent meeting.
