Tropical Storm Emily Expected to Turn Away from Coast

Prediction models show storm unlikely to be a threat to Shore

The tropical storm dumping rain on the island of Hispanola in the Caribbean is not expected to pose a direct threat to the east coast of the U.S., according to reports from the National Weather Service.

Early models predicted Tropical Storm Emily, the fifth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, could have tracked up the Atlantic seaboard over the course of the weekend.

But while current forecasts show Emily could graze southeastern Florida, meteorologists predict the storm will turn out to sea as it heads north. Emily could become a low-level hurricane by Monday morning, when forecasters say she'll likely be off the coast of North Carolina.

The following 24 hours will see the storm veer further east over the Atlantic, according to predictions, bringing it far from the Jersey Shore – though surfers may still see good wave action.
