We're In Manahawkin!

As of 3 p.m. this afternoon, this site is the Barnegat-Manahawkin Patch.

That's it. It's official.

Area residents have long talked about the need for Patch to spread its coverage to Stafford Township, and today, we are making the move at last.

While Barnegat will continue to be one of our towns, our interest and attention will now extend to its immediate neighbor to the south as well. Expect to see coverage of important municipal affairs and local politics, schools and sports, crime news and volunteer activities, profiles of interesting people and photo galleries of events important to both communities on our site.

Barnegat and Manahawkin have much in common. Both are growing towns with an increasing number of young families and facing somewhat similar development pressures. Both identify strongly with the Pinelands culture and keep close ties with LBI.

The two communities share a historical heritage too. According to the Stafford Township Historical Society, Stafford was chartered in 1749 and included parts of present-day Waretown, Barnegat, Long Beach Island and Eagleswood.

As you visit the site, remember, you are helping us shape the Patch experience when you share your views, post your events in our calendar, submit your blogs or letters to the editor and participate in our polls or send us questions and suggestions. Readers also can sign up for our daily and weekly newsletter and breaking news alerts

Readers also can find us on Facebook and Twitter. And don't forget to check out our Directory of local businesses.

Is there anything important going on in either town we should look into? Do you have a strong sentiment you wish to express on a local issue? Whether you're a high school student, a senior citizen, a local business owner or a parent raising a family, whether you live in Barnegat or in Manahawkin, we want to know what you think, we are interested in what  you care about.

We are your Patch — the Barnegat-Manahawkin Patch. You're our community. You're our home.

So Ocean twp is out? Or was Barnegat not good enough that you have to go to Manahawkin like every other business. Too bad, I liked the patch

Did we say we were leaving? No we did not. We are simply expanding, we're here for BOTH, thus the Barnegat-Manahawkin name. :)

We have never really focused on Waretown, though some of the articles about it have occasionally been making their way onto the site.

Thanks for expanding to stafford!! I've read it when it was barnegat patch (even though i was from stafford) and will continue being a loyal reader!!! I enjoy all of your articles! Welcome to Stafford!

Thank you so much!

Welcome Stafford!!! Funny how we share a Patch but Barnegat can't share services with Manahawkin. That would save the Barnegat taxpayers lots of money and we could have 21st century trash pickup. Any one know why Barnegat won't work with our friends to the South???

Waretown should be covered by the Lacey Patch
Xavier June 11, 2012 at 07:34 PM
Excellent question. We share some things with Waretown but Stafford would be a huge partner and increase in buying power.

I for one don't like all the changes in the Patch. I also don't much care for where you are located. I liked the old home page of about 6 months ago. I'm thinking the editor did the changes right after Graylyn left. Before, there were good articles and even a little conversation. Now, who has the best bagels or ice cream seems to be the hard hitting things to talk about. You also have to search to find anything. Like I said, the Patch has gone down hill on interesting subjects. I remember Graylyn being at most Committee meetings and reporting on them the next day. Now? The news on here now is all over the map. What started out as a good thing, is now boring and none informational. What a shame.

Mike, is what you're seeing on the site today all about ice cream and bagels? Really? No news stories? Has Patch not posted at least one article from every single municipal meeting posted the next day, in most cases, since late March when I took over-- three months ago, not six. Another note: a local editor has nothing to do with the look and the search function of the Patch site -- only actual content, and Patch experiments with such things all the time. Things like the Barnegat High School project -- things like that are my decision. You didn't like it? Well, guess what, Graelyn and I planned it together months before I was able to actually execute this. The move to Manahawkin? Not my decision, though I embrace it wholeheatedly, and I am sure Graelyn would have, too. I am sure I cannot change how you feel about my articles, nor do I want to try to, but I do want to address some of your accusations, that are just false, and frankly unfair.

Katia, you are right as of today. As far as blaming you for the Patch layout that was not what I said. If you did change it, well then it was you I was talking about. I go to all the Barnegat Committee meetings and some board meetings. Someone may write stories about them, but I don't think the main topics are well covered. As far as the move to Manahawkin, good for the Patch. Like I said, it doesn't matter to me as long as I see some good stories. Stories about the High School are great, about Committee meetings, great, town activities, great. I have been a reader of the patch for a long time. I want to see the Patch keep up the good work and not slip backward. I am sure you can change my feeling about your articles. Write the Patch articles like you wrote your answer to me. Thank you for you reply.

Well, in that case we want the same things. I am still transitioning into this new role, with Patch pulling me away sometimes for corporate training and such things -- that's why, for example I can't always be at the meetings personally, though this will end soon. Once all the transitioning is done, I will try even harder. I was one of Graelyn's many fans while she was editor, and I'd hate to let her down by doing an inferior job. Thank you.

Katia, no offence to anyone in the past, but I think you are doing a great job. The Patch is better than ever. The censorship of comments and blatant politically biased bloggers are gone. This looks like a place where good journalism and the truth will shine. Mike, it is up to those of us that know the background behind the stories on the Patch to help out and fill in some of the facts that may be over looked. I for one look forward to the follow up stories about the relationship between local developers, real estate companies, and our sitting committeemen. Also on the latest story about the misuse of our open space funds, a simple list of what the money has been spent on makes the issue black and white. Keep up the good work Barnegat Patch!

Glad to see you are in Manahawkin. I have recently heard of the Patch and look forward to learning more about it, possibly even contributing. Thanks!
