Southern Regional To Host Memorial Service on Tuesday For Much-Loved Coach

Southern Regional High School will honor popular basketball and field hockey Kathy Snyder with a memorial service in a place she loved dearly - the high school gym.

Friends, faculty and students were reeling on Friday when they learned Snyder, 58, died in her sleep Friday morning at her Ship Bottom home.

Kathryn A. Leslie Snyder, age 58, of Ship Bottom, beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, teacher, coach, and friend, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 24, 2014 at her home.

Kathy was born and raised in West Long Branch, NJ. She resided in Toms River prior to moving to Long Beach Island. She graduated from Shore Regional High School in 1973. She continued her education and graduated from Trenton State College in 1977 earning her Bachelor's Degree and then eventually her Master's Degree, also from Trenton State.

She was an outstanding high school and college athlete, competing in field hockey, basketball and track and field. She is a member of the Shore Regional Hall of Fame and the NJ Sports Hall of Fame.

Kathy started her teaching career in 1977 at Southern Regional High School and remained there until the present time. During her teaching career she became a very successful field hockey and basketball coach, as well as a track and field coach.

She received numerous accolades as "Coach of the Year", as she compiled 300 plus wins as a field hockey coach and 500 plus wins as a basketball coach. She was owner and founder of Southern Ocean Driving School. Kathy has positively impacted all of those who she has come in contact with. She will be remembered for her gracious heart, dedication, unconditional love, and everlasting energy.

Kathy is predeceased by her parents James and Anne Larsen Leslie. She is survived by her husband and soulmate, Ken, and the joys of her life who she gave so selflessly, her children, Erin and her companion Daren, Brandon and Morgan, and recently the sunshine of her life, her granddaughter, Waverly. Kathy is also survived by her stepchildren Brett Snyder and his wife Veronica and their children Brett Jr., Cassie, Kyle, Emma, Sophia and Carson; Devon Snyder and his wife Rebbeca and their children Isabel and Ian; and Kelly Snyder. Also by her brothers Patrick Leslie and Michael Leslie, her sisters Lori Gately and husband Jim, Karen Gresens and husband Mark and her nieces and nephews Lauren, Kathryn, Megan, Sydene, and Jimmy.

Visiting hours will be Monday, January 27, 2014 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Maxwell Funeral Home, 573 Mill Creek Road, Manahawkin.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 6 p.m. at the Southern Regional High School Gymnasium. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Kathryn Snyder Scholarship Fund, Southern Regional Board of Education, 105 Cedar Bridge Road, Manahawkin, NJ 08050, Attention: Susan Foster.
