Barnegat Police Charge Man Caught On Camera Stealing Cell Phone

Barnegat police recently arrested a Little Egg Harbor man for theft after security camera footage at a convenience store showed him stealing a cell phone,  Lt. Keith Germain said.

Patrolman Michael Moore arrested Michael Jackson, 28, at 2:15 p.m. on March 10. Officers had responded to the 7-11 store for a report of a stolen cell phone. The victim of the theft had accidentally left her phone on the coffee counter before she paid for her merchandise and left the store, he said.

When she realized her phone was missing, she went back to the store to look for the phone, but couldn't find it, Germain said.

Officers checked store security camera footage and observed a male subject remove the phone from the counter and place it in his pocket. The footage further showed the male leaving the area in a vehicle. The officers were able to obtain the license plate number of the vehicle from the video, he said.

Officers were able to identify Jackson as a suspect. Jackson was contacted and turned himself in at police headquarters. The cell phone was recovered and returned to the victim.

Jackson was charged with theft and was released pending a court date.
