UPDATE: Barnegat Woman Who Admitted Sexual Relationship With Boy Is Free On Bail

Erin T. Haskell, 31, pleaded guilty to a four-month-long relationship with a 15-year-old student at her teaching job in Beachwood

A former Toms River Regional schoolteacher who admitted in an Ocean County courtroom on Tuesday that she had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student is free on bail.

Erin T. Haskell, 31, of Barnegat, pleaded guilty to a charge of second degree sexual assault before Superior Court Judge Francis Hodgson. She is free on $300,000 bail, authorities said.

Dressed neatly in a gray skirt and jacket, Haskell timidly responded “yes” to several questions asked by Hodgson as well as her attorney, Bradley Billhimer during the five minute-long proceeding.

Haskell admitted to having sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old minor, identified only by his initials, between June 2012 and Sept. 2012. The sexual activities occurred in both Beachwood, where she taught and Barnegat, her home town.

Prosecutors said at the hearing that they would seek a seven year-long prison term for Haskell. Billhimer said he would ask for three.

As part of the plea agreement, Hodgson said, Haskell will have to register as a sex offender under Meghan’s Law for life, and she will remain under lifetime parole supervision. She will also relinquish her teaching license at sentencing, the date for which will not be set until after Haskell undergoes a psychiatric evaluation at the state Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Avenel.

Haskell, who taught at Intermediate School South in Beachwood, was charged in Nov. 2012 with having an inappropriate relationship with one of her students, then-prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford said at the time.

She was originally charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and exhibiting obscene material to a minor.

State pension records showed Haskell having worked as a Spanish teacher with a masters degree and eight years experience at the time her employment was suspended by the Toms River Regional school district. Her salary at the time was $54,800.

Neither Haskell nor her attorney were available for comment following Tuesday’s proceedings.

Yeah, she ruined that boy's life. Most teenage boys save themselves for marriage.

Why did she do this?
Mac August 07, 2013 at 11:35 AM
@James - Am I to assume you understand why he did this?
proud August 07, 2013 at 12:06 PM
Okay, read the article. Under the plea agreement the State will seek Seven years and the defense will ask for three. My guess is somewhere in the middle.

I'm having a problem accepting that prison is the solution for punishing this teacher if this charge is substantiated (at least from the information I'm aware of so far.) I understand if this happened that the teacher broke the trust we place in those that educate our children and I agreed that deterrents to such behavior are necessary. But prison? Who got hurt here? They are both kids regardless of their roles or positions. It would seem to me that being fired as a teacher and having her teaching certificate suspended for a few years if she is guilty would give her time to grow up more and become more of a responsible citizen than a prison record for consensual sex would serve. Let's face it. If it happened, the only things the 15-year-old is going to experience are a bunch of high-fives and a lot more female popularity. And it will more than likely be several years, if ever, before this young man realizes just how traumatized we expected him to be from this situation.

@Mac, did you read the article? She pleaded guilty. Admitted to a four month romp. Are you possibly talking about the Wall case scheduled for a court appearance today? If you are going to comment, please do a tad more than scan the headline.
Mac August 07, 2013 at 01:17 PM
Oops, wrong article. Thanks proud. Yeah, it's definitely the 22-year-old Wall teacher I'm speaking about. The teacher here was not a child himself. As for reading more than the headline, a cheap shot, for sure. I am guilty of flipping from article to article in different Patches, a long-time habit, but I haven't (obviously) gotten down the same article being published independently in each different Patch yet as well as I thought I had. Frankly, I thought I was entering this comment in the Wall and Toms River Patches. I started out there. All in all, not a great day so far. Even my post was oops proofread. Agreed.

I guess one should not post when having an argument at home. .......... herself.

My apologies to those that read my comments in this article. I posted here by a mistake I assume was made by having tooooo many pages open at once. This comment was meant for today's Wall Patch article in regard to the Facebook support page being taken down. I have tried to delete my comments but for some reason I am not able to and am inquiring as to why this is so. And yes proud, I have read the directions on how to delete comments thank you in advance (just in case you missed the TR post.)

Why doesnt the other loser who was sending child porn files in Barnegat have the same high bail set? Where did this bimbo get her bail money from? Maybe young boys pay her to get rid of their virginity and that is where she got so much money for bail.I hope she isnt back in Barnegat living a few houses from Dunfee(according to public records). If she goes near my kid or any friends kids because she will regret it. She is a pig. I hope her poor husband doesnt take her back.

prison is ridiculous... pulling her license and maybe psych. treatment i can understand... the little stud will be fine he just learned a little more a little sooner than some other boys... if the teacher was someone who threatened to fail him or held him against his will than i could understand but this is a stud that has the will and she has the way... let it go people...

I understand how this is no big deal but let's say they never said female teacher male student. 33 year old male teacher 15 year old female student. Adults are not helping raise children. Everyone is so worried about being friends with these kids.

She was my teacher 3 years ago....lovely. Anddd I know who the kid was. Even better.
