Car-Vs.-Building Collision Causes Minor Damage

Driver struck side of building in Commons at Hampton Ridge on Gunning River Road after hitting gas instead of brake

A medical office on Gunning River Road received minor damage after a driver struck the side of the building while trying to back out of a parking space this morning, police said.

The 90-year-old female driver accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake in her 2010 Chevy Impala while pulling away from Coastal Endoscopy shortly after 10 a.m., said Officer Ed Hayes of the Barnegat Township Police Department.

Her car then struck the building, causing some bricks to crumble and buckling drywall inside the office, said Hayes. He said a building inspector classified the damage as minor, but the sheetrock and brick facade will need repairs.

EMS was called to the scene, said Hayes, but neither the driver nor her 72-year-old passenger were injured in the collision. The driver's car received only minor bumper damage, he said.

Hayes said it was unlikely any charges would be filed.
