National Weather Service Still Evaluating What Slammed Into Stafford Today

Answer should come by tomorrow

Was it a tornado or not?

That's the question National Weather Service officials are trying to answer about the storms that ripped through sections of Stafford Township this morning.

"We are still investigating," said Mitchell Gaines, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly. "We may be able to make a determination today or tomorrow."

National Weather Service citizen "spotters" generally reported winds between 60 to 65 miles per hour when heavy rain and winds moved in mid-morning, Gaines said.

A NWS study team may be out in the field soon, checking on the direction downed trees fell, root damage and path width," he said.

Rainfall amounts in some areas of Ocean County reached as high as six inches, Gaines said.
