Police: 2011 Investigations Yielded $40,000 in Seized Drugs, Cash, Property

Prescription drug and heroin charges made up more than half of possession arrests last year

The Barnegat Police Department has released details on its 2011 narcotics busts, showing police seized $40,000 in drugs, cash and property and arrested 60 people last year.

Lt. Keith Germain said in a news release that with help from concerned citizens, the department's narcotics unit executed nine search warrants in 2011. 

Of the possession arrests generated by the busts, 60 percent were for heroin or prescription drugs, according to department statistics. More than $14,000 in prescription medications and heroin were seized, police said.

There were: 

  • 27 charges of possession of prescription drugs
  • 17 charges of possession of heroin
  • 29 charges of possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute
  • 15 charges of obtaining a controlled dangerous substance by fraud or forgery
  • 14 charges of possession of syringes or drug paraphernalia

  • More than $7,000 in prescription medication
  • More than $7,000 in heroin
  • Nearly $4,000 in U.S. currency
  • 2 motor vehicles

"The Barnegat Police Department will continue to aggressively investigate and pursue drug related offenses in 2012," Germain said in the release, and police strongly encourage residents to report suspicious activity they think might be drug-related.

"It is important for residents to remember that even seemingly minor information can be extremely helpful to officers involved in drug investigations," said Germain.
