Two-Year-Old Stafford Girl Drowns In Backyard Swimming Pool

by Patricia A. Miller

A two-year-old Buccaneer Lane girl drowned in the family backyard swimming pool yesterday, an Ocean County Prosecutor's Office spokesman said.

Police were called to the home at 4:22 p.m. on Wednesday on a report of a child submerged in a swimming pool. When they arrived, they found the little girl's uncle giving her CPR, Al Della Fave said.

"It appears the two-year-old was in a room in the back of the house watching T.V," he said. "But when her grandmother went to check on her, she saw the sliding glass door open."

The toddler was found in the deep end of the pool. Her uncle pulled her out and began giving her CPR. The little girl was rushed to Southern Ocean County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 4:49 p.m, Della Fave said.

The incident highlights the need for pool safety, especially at this time of year, he said.

"It only takes a minute for a tragedy to occur," Della Fave said.

The Prosecutor's Office and Stafford police are conducting a joint investigation, he said.
