Barnegat officials acknowledged that at least two Township Committee members attended a closed session of the March 18 Board of Education meeting - but denied that the meeting was "illegal."
Mayor Susan McCabe, speaking at the committee's Monday meeting, acknowledged that Deputy Mayor Martin Lisella, Committeeman Albert Bille and herself attended the regular meeting, and were invited to attend the closed session "for reasons I'm still not completely clear about."
"Out of abundance of caution, only two members of the Township Committee participated in closed session discussions," she said. "Two members is not a quorum."
She said two members attending a meeting does not violate the Open Public Meetings Act, otherwise known as the Sunshine Law.
"Our presence at the school Board of Education meeting was simply to stress the importance of working together," McCabe said.
McCabe acknowledged "it was I who expressed concern about three of us being invited to executive session."
