Residents Give Christie a Show of Support

Many who turned out to see the governor sign legislation at the Barnegat dock today said they want to see Christie run for President

Many of the Barnegat residents who flocked to the municipal dock today to meet and greet Gov. Chris Christie shared the sentiment of the man who yelled out a plea after the governor finished signing legislation allocating funds for statewide water quality protection.

“Run for President!” was the cry.

Christie laughed off the call of support, but Irene Haberstick said she had the same hope.

Haberstick said she was thrilled to learn the governor was making a stop in Barnegat today.

“I’ll take any opportunity I can get to meet him,” she said. “I hope he’s on his way to Washington. He’s got more common sense than anybody else in politics I’ve seen in a long time, and that’s what we need more of – just good old common sense.”

Dotty Flynn came with her aunt Dorothy Gordon and her husband Tom to see the governor sign the legislation, which benefits communities bordering Barnegat Bay and elsewhere in New Jersey.

“He makes you feel good that you live in New Jersey,” she said.

Her aunt agreed, and said it was a thrill to see Christie in person. “I got a big hug,” Gordon said.

Protecting the bay in their backyard is vital, all three said, and they were glad to see Christie show his support.

They said they want to see Christie run for higher office, “but not yet,” said Dotty Flynn. Like the governor himself, she and her husband said they think there’s more work to do in New Jersey first.

“Once he’s straightened us out, we can let him straighten out the rest of the country,” Tom Flynn said.
