Route 72 Sections Designated As 'No Passing' Zones

Too many serious accidents on Route 72 between Neptune and Nautilus drives, Council President says

The Township Council and the state Department of Transportation have agreed that there are swaths of roadway along Route 72 in Manahawkin where passing should be prohibited.

Council members passed a resolution at the Nov. 12 meeting that establishes "no passing" zones on Route 72 from Neptune to Nautilus drives.

The resolution originally stated the entire length of Route 72. But when a resident questioned the wording, Township Council President Henry J. Mancini said it would be corrected to read from Neptune to Nautilus only.

"It's not the entire length," he said. "The DOT has identified it as subject to many traffic accidents. It's become a safety issue. We've had three or four serious accidents and some deaths."

"We are asking for the no-passing, which certainly makes sense," Councilman Stephen Fessler said.
