Southern Ocean Towns Gear Up For Deep Freeze

Although there will be record cold and dangerous wind chill conditions over the next two days, Barnegat and Waretown Administrator Breeden doesn't think icy roads will be a big problem.

Just the same, salt trucks will be standing by if needed, Breeden said today.

"Any moisture currently on the road should quickly evaporate as a result of the extremely low humidity associated with cold weather, along with the strong winds," said Breeden, who serves as Township Administrator for both Barnegat and Waretown. "Any hazardous road conditions should be isolated and promptly addressed with salt trucks that are on call."

Breeden is more concerned about residents venturing outside for the next two days.

"This area has not experienced such extreme wind chill factors in a number of years, so if they are not properly dressed, adverse health conditions can quickly set in," he said.

Breen also said it is "critical" that residents bring their pets inside over the next 48 hours.

Barnegat and Waretown also sent out a joint Nixle alert about the coming cold:

"Low temperatures tonight will be around 8 degrees, but with winds sustained at 20mph to 25mph with gust up to 40mph, wind chill factors will be as low as 20 degrees below zero.

"On Tuesday, daytime highs will struggle to reach 12 degrees and with the continued strong winds, the wind chill factor will be as low as 13 degrees below zero. Temperatures Tuesday night will reach a low of about 5 degrees. However, winds will be decreasing, so wind chills will be in the range of around 10 degrees below zero.

With the record cold and dangerous wind chills impacting the area, residents are urged to dress appropriately if they must venture outside. Minimize the amount of exposed skin as frost bite can quickly set in under these extreme winter weather conditions. In addition, it is strongly recommended that residents take their pets inside for the next couple of days for their well being and care. "
