Stafford Council Tables Ordinance On Community Center

Township fighting $140,000 flood insurance settlement for center

More time is needed to study the cost and design of the proposed new Mill Creek Community Center to replace the one destroyed by Superstorm Sandy, Township Council President Henry J. Mancini said.

Township Council members tabled the $2 million ordinance last night and decided to hold it until the Dec. 10 meeting.

"It will allow the council to better make a decision in terms of bonding and the design," Mancini said after the meeting. "We all agree it's important to move forward. We have some rough concepts that need to be discussed."

The township's Community Center took in four feet of water during Sandy. The foundation of the roughly 6,000 square-foot building was cracked and the infrastructure destroyed, Mancini said.

"Our engineer says the building is totaled," he said.

The township so far has received only $140,000 from the flood insurance carrier for the center. Stafford is appealing the decision, Mancini said.

"Obviously, you can't do anything for $140,000," he said.

Actor Alec Baldwin recently donated $250,000 to help rebuild the center in Beach Haven West.

Baldwin’s philanthropic foundation, the AB Foundation, made the donation to rebuild the Stafford Township center last year after learning about the situation through Governor Chris Christie's office.

The township has been using the old Town Hall on Bay Avenue as a temporary community center for the eastern section of Stafford.

Civic groups are "making do" with the old Town Hall, Mancini said.

"But that building is old and somewhat in disrepair itself," he said.
